BALTIMORE — Michael Phelps says it's fair for USA Swimming to suspend him for three months, the latest fallout from a photo showing the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe. Phelps was back training at his regular pool Friday, a day after his suspension.

"It's not my decision. It's theirs," Phelps said of USA Swimming's decision. "I have nothing to say, but if that's they want to do, that's their choice. It's something that USA Swimming came up with. It's fair. Obviously, for a mistake you should get punished."

Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing and returned to America as one of the world's most acclaimed athletes. He made headlines of a different kind, however, in the wake of the photo, published Sunday by News of the World, a British tabloid.

"It was bad and stupid judgment, and something I'll always live with," Phelps said, minutes before diving into the pool at the Meadowbrook Aquatic Center, where he has trained since he was 7.

Although the fallout cost Phelps his Kellogg Co. sponsorship, Subway announced Friday it still supports him.

"Like most Americans, and like Michael Phelps himself, we were disappointed in his behavior," the statement said. "Also like most Americans, we accept his apology. Moving forward, he remains in our plans."

The fallout from the picture has been much greater than in 2004, when an underage Phelps was arrested for drunken driving three months after the Athens Olympics. He pleaded guilty and apologized to his fans, saying he wouldn't make the same mistake.

Phelps wasn't sure how the negative publicity might influence his decision to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.

"I'm taking it step by step, day by day. There's still a long way between now and then," he said. "But I'm back here, I'm training for who knows what yet. But I'm back in the water, doing the thing I love."

That's a welcome diversion from the attention he's getting outside the pool.

"From waking up to megaphones outside your house at 7:30 in the morning to still photographers out there every day for the last four days from 7:30 to when I left for a workout, I can just do what's normal for me," he said. "And right now that's me coming to the pool every day."

His coach, Bob Bowman, said the suspension will alter his plans for Phelps, who recently resumed serious training with the goal of qualifying for this summer's world championships in Rome.

"It takes away some options from our planning. You know, we had a plan of meets to kind of get us ready for the end of the summer and now we'll have to adjust that," Bowman said. "That kind of comes with this territory."

With the three-month suspension he won't be able to take on any rivals until early May, which would give him a little more than two months of competition before July's world championships in Rome.

The U.S. team for Rome will be chosen at the national championships July 7-11 in Indianapolis.

USA Swimming's decision to suspend Phelps didn't surprise Bowman.

"As a member of USA Swimming, I expected them to take action," Bowman said. "I think that we'll abide by it. I think it sends a very strong message to Michael and to others. I understand the disciplinary action."

And Phelps was thankful for those who have supported him.

"I've been getting messages on Facebook, both good and bad. E-mails, both good and bad. Text messages, all good," he said. "This is time when you need support. To have support from the majority of my sponsors, probably 90 percent, it means a lot. And it's something I'm very thankful for."

And what about his mother, Debbie Phelps?

"Mom wasn't happy," Phelps said. "She's been supportive through it, but wasn't happy."

Michael Phelps is an American Hero. He stood tall and made America proud at the Beijing Olympics. This is how America treats its heroes, we forget all of the hard work Michael Phelps did to achieve his task, we forget the pride we felt with the each gold medal, we forget how Phelps helped America to be competitive against a Chinese when they planned on winning all of the gold’s, we forget all of those things and hang a man for smoking a glass pipe at a college party. It is time that we as a country stand up for the rights of the individual, it’s time we stand together with our neighbors and take collective control of our destinies. Write a congressman or a senator any of them; Imagine the weight of millions of emails calling for a change in policy. In this moment in America anything is possible just Google the email address of your representative and send him or her a short email. It will take 10 minutes but then you have taken responsibility for change. A senator considers each email as representative of 2 thousand voters.

This has all become pathetic - Michael has become a pinata ... and there is a frenzied frothing contingent that is behaving as though they want to "take him down" - all eagerly scrambling to see who might be able to deliver the ultimate knockout blow.
Michael Phelps has been single mindedly dedicated to competitive swimming for the past 12 years - it has given him a focus, it has provided him with a coping tool / outlet / self discipline framework as he grew and learned how to co-exist with his learning disabilities. It would be tragic if the intensity of the pursuit of this issue pushes him to leave swimming and seek solitude away from the spotlight.
While I am not going to give him a complete "pass" - since what was capture on a cellphone camera on November 6th was stupid (uh - yeah- violated first rule of being famous - don't do anything in public that you could not stand having on the front page of the NY Times) ... It is quite comprehendable - all of those years & now he has arguably now become the most accomplished swimmer in history - Yes, there might be some "cutting loose" and yes, it might have moments of inappropriate behavior-- but the feeding frenzy on this subject has become so disproportionate that it is repulsive.

If he had been photographed with a martini, would the results be the same? There's too much $$$$ in sports.

I am sure the Kellogg Company had a contract with Phelps that covered things like this. If he broke the contract then he is responsible for that not Kellogg. To say that others have done the same or worse is not even the point. It all boils down to personal responsibility. We are all accountable for our actions. If you want to do things like that then get out of the public spot light and don't sign contracts saying you wont do drugs or whatever.

Where would America be right now if George W. apologized for WMD, Iraqi War and ignoring our sinking economy? Hey ex-Pres Bush, take a note from Michael Phelps. Look what happens when you get caught doing something stupid and accept responsibility for it. You still have consequences for your action, but at least he's taking it like a man.

His apology is cowing toward the Talibums, be a man and say, "Yes, I took a toke, why do you think I am so fast?"

I think some real good detective work should be done. I think members of USA Swimming, Kellogg's, and any other companies that plan to release Michael from his endorsements, should be closely watched, morally, ethically, legally, in any possible way. If they are found guilty of ANYTHING they do in their work, spare or private time, it should be made public, and they should be scrutinized as Michael has been.
No body is perfect. I just hope that we get some information about the CEO's of these companies such as Kellogg's and USA Swimming, and such.
I mean come on! Let's see just how perfect they all are. I'm sure we can dig up some incriminating information and proof.

I've not come across the name of the d1.ck who deliberately sold that bong photo to the press.

That person should be suspended from all social contact with anyone. And Phelps should sue him/her.

USA Swimming needs to get a calender and figure out what century we're living in, and Michael Phelps needs to stop apologizing. He did nothing to apologize for.

Number one,if smoking a little pot is the worst thing this guy ever does,he'll be doing well.
Number two,Americans have got to get over worshiping athletes. These are adults who make a living playing games. And when they can't play any more, they make a living watching games and talking about it.And you expect them to be mature and responsible? If they were, they wouldn't spend their lives playing games.Hey- I like watching sports as much as anyone, but to put a 18 on a pedestal because he swims fast,is too much. Now,if he had found a cure for cancer or a new grain that could feed the starving millions then you could hold him up as an example for your kids.Stop expecting these guys to be what you want them to be in your imagination.Enjoy their performances, but remember they're just big kids playing games.
