Obama News Conference (VIDEO)

President Barack Obama, pressuring lawmakers to urgently approve a massive economic recovery bill, turned his first prime-time news conference Monday night into a determined defense of his emergency plan and an offensive against Republicans who try to "play the usual political games."

He said the recession has left the nation so weak that only the federal government can "jolt our economy back to life." And he declared that failure to act swiftly and boldly "could turn a crisis into a catastrophe."

He said the country could be in better shape by next year, as measured by increased hiring, lending, home values and other factors. "If we get things right, then, starting next year, we can start seeing significant improvement," Obama said.

With more than 11 million Americans now out of work, Obama defended his program against Republican criticism that it is loaded with pork-barrel spending and will not create jobs.

"The plan is not perfect," the president said. "No plan is. I can't tell you for sure that everything in this plan will work exactly as we hope, but I can tell you with complete confidence that a failure to act will only deepen this crisis as well as the pain felt by millions of Americans."

Obama spoke from the East Room of the White House in a news conference that lasted almost exactly one hour. He hit repeatedly at the themes he has emphasized in recent weeks, including at a town hall meeting to promote his plan earlier in the day in Elkhart, Ind.

Obama seemed cool and unruffled as he addressed the nation for the first time from the White House. He ducked several questions, for example refusing to say if his administration would alter the Bush administration's policy of refusing to allow photographs of flag-draped coffins of America's war dead.

He also refused to say how long U.S. troops would be in Afghanistan after his planned troop buildup there. And he refused to reveal details of new rules governing the bailout of financial firms.

When the stimulus bill passed the House last month, not a single Republican voted for it. On Monday an $838 billion version of the legislation cleared a crucial test vote in the Senate by a 61-36 margin, with all but three Republican senators opposing it.

Obama said he had made a deliberate effort to reach out to the GOP, putting three Republicans into his Cabinet, and "as I continue to make these overtures, over time, hopefully that will be reciprocated."

"So my bottom line when it comes to the recovery package is: send me a bill that creates or saves 4 million jobs."

Obama acknowledged the difficulty of mending political divisions between Republicans and Democrats.

"Old habits are hard to break," he said. "We're coming off an election, and people sort of want to test the limits of what they can get. There's a lot of jockeying in this town and who's up and who's down, testing for the next election."

Still, he said, "I am the eternal optimist. I think that over time people respond to civility and rational argument."

Obama said the federal government was the only power that could save the nation at a time of crisis, with huge spending outlays and tax cuts.

"At this particular moment, with the private sector so weakened by this recession, the federal government is the only entity left with the resources to jolt our economy back to life," he said.

Rejecting criticism that the emphasis on federal action was too great, he said that 90 percent of the jobs created by the plan would be in the private sector, rebuilding crumbling roads, bridges and other aging infrastructure.

"The plan that ultimately emerges from Congress must be big enough and bold enough to meet the size of the economic challenge we face right now," Obama said.

Again and again, he stressed that the economy is in dire straits.

"This is not your ordinary, run of the mill recession," he said. Obama said the United States aims to avoid the kind of economic pain that Japan endured in the 1990s -- the "lost decade" when that nation showed no economic growth.

"My bottom line is to make sure that we are saving or creating 4 million jobs," he said, and that homeowners facing foreclosure receive some relief.

While Obama focused on the economy in the opening minutes of the news conference, he also faced questions on foreign policy. He was asked how his administration would deal with Iran, a nation accused by the United States of supporting terrorism and pursuing nuclear weapons.

The president said his administration was reviewing its policy toward Iran "looking at places where we can have constructive dialogue." He also said it was time for Iran to change its behavior.

"My expectation is in the coming months we will be looking for openings that can be created where we can start sitting across the table face to face," Obama said.

He said that Iran must understand that funding terrorist organizations and pursuing nuclear weapons are unacceptable.

Obama tried to brace the U.S. for tougher sacrifices ahead in Afghanistan, where he said the national government is limited and terrorists still find places to hide and hinder coalition efforts.

An estimated 33,000 U.S. troops currently are in Afghanistan, and the Pentagon is expected to almost double that presence. So just as Obama is planning to pull troops out of Iraq, he is sending more into Afghanistan.

"I do not have a timetable for how long that's going to take," he said. "What I know is I'm not going to allow al-Qaida and (Osama) bin Laden to operate with impunity, planning attacks."

On other points Obama:

-- Called Alex Rodriguez' admission that he used steroids "depressing news" that tarnishes an entire era of Major League baseball. The All-Star third baseman with the New York Yankees told ESPN on Monday he used banned substances while playing with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

-- Suggested it was unlikely his administration would seek to prosecute anyone involved in harsh interrogations of terrorism suspects. "Generally speaking, I am more interested in looking forward than in looking backward," he said.

-- Said Pakistan has not provided "the kind of concerted effort to root out those safe havens" used by al-Qaida in its lawless, mountainous border region near Afghanistan.

I've just heard on our news in the UK, that the Obama administration is seeking to have a Gitmo court case brought by a victim of extraordinary rendition thrown out of court on the basis that any CIA ER activity is secret.

Say it's not so. If true, so much for his promises to make up for the lost decade of torture and kidnap that Bush perpetrated. If he is protecting the practice then it seems obvious he has no intention of banning it.

Very disappointing and Obama must come clean on whether his rhetoric on this issue will match his practice or whether he intends, secretly and behind closed doors, to continue Bush's torture plans while denouncing them in public.

This is a trillion dollar heist.

Obama and crew want all power and wealth to belong to the government. That is OUR POWER and OUR WEALTH they're taking. This is a power grab and they're moving fast.

These "bailouts" and "stimulus packages" are not about helping the poor or creating jobs. They are about paying off constituents and restructuring America. Printing trillions of dollars will lead to hyperinflation and make the dollar worthless, which is beneficial to the Marxists who want the public helpless and dependent on the government. Also, the package contains stealth life-changing measures that should be debated, not rushed through before we know what hit us.

If the plan succeeds, we will have been drained of our money, power, and ability to fight back. The government will control our access to jobs, housing, information, education, and healthcare. We will go from being free Americans to being the pawns of whomever is in charge. With ACORN and similar groups funded with billions of our dollars, there will be no more fair elections and no way to undo the damage.

Even those who love Obama should resist this. What if the next Dear Leader is someone you hate as much as Bush? Lenin set in place the all-powerful government that enabled Stalin to brutally kill millions.

If you care about liberty, fight back. Call your representatives and tell them to stop the heist. We can help the people affected by this recession without sacrificing our freedom.

How much has been and will be spent in Iraq?
How many pallets of hundred dollar bills unaccounted for?
How much spent on TARP with no accountability required?

How many phones and emails have been scrutinized?

Why are you only now upset about this. . . ? 'Cause it ain't Bush?

Lucky for us, then. Since conservative orthodoxy requires "WWII to end the depression" we're fortunate to be dumping pallet-loads of money into two wars already.

Domestic spending should ice the cake, and really, why not build some roads and bridges here instead of just in Iraq. Or don't those on the right use roads? (Hint: Even Adam Smith favored certain domestic spending.)

Mr. President, the time for "selling" the stimulus to the repubs is OVER. The ONLY thing these idiots understand is hit their states in their own pockets. Provide the stimulus to the States that elected you!
Then, IF there is anything left, which I hope not. let the money "trickle" down! I understand you are a bigger person that I am, but the election is over! Since they want to be "red" states, then keep them in the "red"!

Let's keep it simple:
No funds for districts/states where the rep/senator is objecting. Reverse earmarks.

They get to stand on their principles and next election they can face their constituents.
12:32 PM on 02/10/2009
I second and third that!

I recommend the Blue states that elected him to office get the cash! That way, those who stood on their "principles" in the red states can stay there! In the RED

It is about jobs.

The more businesses that fire workers the more businesses that may fire workers. Many businesses are firing workers because they are having a hard time obtaining capital.

I recommend people read

"Obama Has the Chance To Be Another FDR -- He Can End the Era of Marijuana Prohibition" by Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman

http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/120365

Former Senator Fritz Hollings on this website on "Industrial Policy" mentions a "10% surcharge on imports". I think this makes a lot of sense.

I think it makes sense for the federal government and state governments to loan money to manufacturing companies and other companies. I think it makes sense for the federal government and state governments to buy stock in manufacturing companies and other companies.

If the highest federal corporate tax rate is NOT greater than 15 percent, many businesses may hire more people, increase wages of many people, and increase dividends. Pension funds of government employees may do a lot better. Many businesses may have an easier time obtaining loans and investments.

The federal government and state governments should stop taxing interest from savings accounts, dividends, capital gains, and estates. Businesses need capital to stay in business. Businesses need capital to pay their employees.

I discuss the Securities Turnover Excise Tax and other sales taxes on my profile on http://www.newgeography.com

Sincerely,

"This is probably the worst bill that has been put forward since the 1930s. I don't know what to say. I mean it's wasting a tremendous amount of money. It has some simplistic theory that I don't think will work, so I don't think the expenditure stuff is going to have the intended effect. I don't think it will expand the economy. And the tax cutting isn't really geared toward incentives. It's not really geared to lowering tax rates; it's more along the lines of throwing money at people. On both sides I think it's garbage. So in terms of balance between [spending and tax relief] it doesn't really matter that much."

817 Billion Dollars, split 58% spending, 42% tax cuts is a Blown Show. We don't have unlimited do-overs. Our creditors aren't going to put up with our stupidity forever. We have this golden opportunity to rescue the Middle-Class and end the National Debt. Either we get this turned around: 1 Trillion Dollars, 80% spending, 20% tax cuts, 50% of the 80% ($400 Billion) spent on converting America to an entirely Green Economy -or- we descend to being a Second Rate Nation. Wake-up! We're running out of options. 'Politics as Usual' are destroying our Nation. The Oil Economy has to be put down, or it will put America down. Garner the political will to save us now, or go down in history as the constituency that drove the final nail (I do mean crucifixion) into a once free and proud Nation.

P.S. I have an excellent addition to the stimulus package. It will create jobs, improve communications and transparency in government and magnitudinally improve cyber-security within our infrastructure. Convert every computer in the Federal system (including the misbegottenly crash-prone Congressional web-servers) over to Linux, Open BSD, or another, most appropriate for the application, form of Unix. The only systems that should be immune to the first wave of this conversion should be systems we are strategically or tactically dependent upon for National security. As the bulk of these are already Linux computers or clusters, this shouldn't impact the process in any significant manner.

Hayek gives the main arguments for the free-market case and presents his manifesto on the "errors of socialism." Hayek argues that socialism has, from its origins, been mistaken on factual, and even on logical, grounds and that its repeated failures in the many different practical applications of socialist ideas that this century has witnessed were the direct outcome of these errors. He labels as the "fatal conceit" the idea that "man is able to shape the world around him according to his wishes."

My system is not ready for this shock. What is the deal? We have a president at a press conference answering questions in complete sentences, being informed on the issues and providing answers in a logical and cogent manner. Next thing you know, the American people will start to expect mastery of the issues on the part of the chief executive.

Who is the idiot that asked about A Rod? President Obama was far too polite. He should have scolded this person for wasting time with trivia.
