Lieberman Stepped Up Role As Talks Ebbed

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sen. Ben Nelson spent the last two weeks either surrounded by reporters or huddled with centrist members of both parties, hashing out a deal to move the president's stimulus through the chamber.

On the way to the most critical of those meetings last Friday evening, a scrum formed around him. The Democratic caucus was ready to meet White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and debate the plan Nelson and Maine Republican Susan Collins had hammered out. Nelson, a Democrat from Nebraska, stopped to answer questions and looked to be settling in for an extended back and forth with the press.

Joe Lieberman wasn't having it.

"Let's go," he hollered from behind Nelson, pushing the pair through the scrum. "We've gotta get in there and get it done."

While national attention has been heaped on Collins and Nelson, the hidden story of the stimulus negotiations is the role played by Lieberman - a man only weeks removed from a vote that could have cast him out of the Democratic caucus.

The successful passage of the stimulus began with Obama's decision to pardon Lieberman for the sin of campaigning for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during the presidential election.

Lieberman initially stayed at the edge of negotiations, but as they dragged on, he inserted himself more forcefully, leveraging the close relationships he has with Republicans - after all, they asked him to join them - to peel away a few crucial votes.

"He does have a solid relationship" with Republicans, said Nelson. "He's been here quite a long time, so he and Senator Specter have been here together the longest of the group."

Campaigning for the other party's candidates can be quite a help when the election is over. "I think he has campaigned for a couple of the others, as well, so they obviously have a relationship and that's been helpful," said Nelson.

"Joe's longtime good relationship with Arlen Specter helped considerably," said Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who was in on the centrist meetings.

"He was important," said Sen. Specter, who, along with Collins and her fellow Maine Republican Olympia Snowe, broke ranks to join the Democrats. "But the critical talks occurred between Senator Reid, Senator Collins and, for awhile, Senator Voinovich. Those were the principal discussions."

Majority Leader Harry Reid spokesman Jim Manley said that Lieberman "played a crucial role in keeping this all together."

Lieberman is a liberal when it comes to fiscal policy and his vote was never in doubt. He attended the meetings as an observer at first, he said, but then saw the talks begin to fall apart and took a more assertive role.

In describing it, he was careful to give credit to Nelson and Collins. "Ben Nelson took the initiative here; I was very glad he did," said Lieberman. "Susan Collins, with him, took a lot of guts and they were leading."

But Lieberman confirmed the account told to the Huffington Post: that he only stepped up his involvement when the talks were ebbing. "I went to all the meetings and then I kind of felt there was a danger this was going to fall apart. And I know all the people pretty well over the years, including, particularly, the three Republicans. So, I jumped in and I'm glad -- and Ben welcomed me - I was glad to be able to be of help," Lieberman said.

When the bipartisan accord was announced last Friday night, Nelson, Collins, Specter and Lieberman stood before the cameras. Lieberman celebrated his colleagues as deserving the "medal of honor" for putting country before party - reminiscent of his pitch for McCain's presidential campaign.

Following the press conference, Lieberman was further rewarded. Reid, from the Senate well, asked that the deal just reached be consummated with floor speeches from Nelson, Collins, Specter and, in the honored anchor position, Lieberman.

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) objected that the balance was unfair. Reid, with his response, subtly welcomed Lieberman back into the party.

"I would say that we are alternating," he said, "We have two Republicans and two Democrats."

Hundreds of thousands of people are losing their homes. We really need more politicians, especially those in the Senate, to come together and work together. I happen to be an Obama fan, but I realize that liberal Democrats can't fix our economy by ourselves; we need the help of more conservative Democrats, and Republicans. So far, it seems that one or two (maybe more) Republican Governors are coming around.

Trying to weasel his way out of politcal purgatory. His days are numbered in Connecticut politics... he will have to move to some Republican enclave in the South, and hood wink some naive South Carolinians.

Best wishes to the UAW, but I'd rather they manufacture electric vehicles only. And if the collapse of GM (& / or Chrysler & / or Ford) and a government re-training program are necessary, so be it. No corporation is too big, too American, or too powerful to go down.

I'll give credit where credit is due: good job, Senator Lieberman. You STILL have a lot of work to do to redeem yourself in my eyes, but this is a good start.

That's nice but Lie.berman should be nowhere near national security and military intelligence responsibilities. I look forward to the situation two years from now; we will have over 60 genuine Democrats in the Senate, and will no longer need to sacrifice the legitimacy of our common defense to the promotion of the general welfare. Because of Lie.berman, it is currently one or the other. He is an intellectual dinosaur, and does not understand that peace has been possible since the fall of the Soviet Union, nor that the corporate welfare and the general welfare are not equivalent. He supports extending the banana grower/drug dealer/DEA/CIA cartel's failed interventionist foreign policies in South America and Central America to every other country corrupt enough or weak enough to permit Halliburton, et al, to do "business" within its borders.

I have one simple question: If LIEberman has the ability to reach across the aisle and be the savior, what happened to McCain? ...maybe two questions: All I heard between the two was "My friend this or my friend that." I thought friends stick together. Why couldn't Benedict Arnold sway "His good friend" into supporting this recovery plan? LIEberman, you've allowed yourself to be played and you are doing your best to be that prodical son. Right?

McCain has lost it completely. Actually, if you research him, he never was the MAVERICK or moderate that many thought him to be. He has never earned a dime that wasn't from our tax dollars, going back generations with his father and grandfather, until he married the rich one. Anyway he has always treated women poorly and wasn't well liked from his teenage years on all the way through his career. He is strong when he disagrees with something, but . . . he is a complete fake and has always been a cruel man.

We've all seen McC's cruelty, and his ignorance, arrogance and avarice. so how could so many vote for him to be in charge of this country? i just don't get it.

But back on planet Earth.... either Joe is like him, which i doubt. Or Joe wants to be like him. That i can believe. But nobody wants really wants joe. Nobody should trust him. So he squawked a little here and there. He didn't sway the vote. That i won't believe. Specter is only swayed by what's good for Specter. That i know way up here in Pennsylvania. Reid gave him lip service at the end including him in things, but i'm not buying it. As Spector said, "....the critical talks occurred between Senator Reid, Senator Collins and, for awhile, Senator Voinovich. Those were the principal discussions." So LIE and his pals remain pretty much irreleant to me.

Keep your friends close...and your enemies even closer. A lot pf politics deals with people helping AND using each other.
And if push comes to shove, don't look a "gift horse" (ie: Lieberman, etc...) in the mouth. It worked to get this stimulus package through....and against the GOP blowhards.

Lieberman stepped up? Did he?

He is going to need to do more than that to overcome his credibility gap. He is going to need an escalator of virtue, an elevator of honor, and a jet pack of transformational thinking before he could ever approach turning back the tide of disapproval that he wrought through his duplicitous dishonorable acts.

Word on the street is Lieberman is not appreciated in many quarters. The only quarter that matters is his home state. I wait to see its’ electoral opinion of Joltin’ Joe.
