LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown, who was arrested a week ago in connection with a domestic violence investigation, said Sunday he is "sorry and saddened" by what happened and is seeking counseling from his pastor and loved ones.

The 19-year-old R&B singer also said much of what has been reported of the incident is untrue, although he did not elaborate.

"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person," Brown said in a statement issued through publicist Michael Sitrick.

"Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and-or reported in the media is wrong," he added. But he said he couldn't discuss that in detail until his case is resolved.

He also said he has not posted any comments about the incident on Facebook or any other Web site. "Those posts or writings under my name are frauds," he said.

Brown surrendered to Los Angeles police on Feb. 8 and was released on $50,000 bail after being booked for investigation of making a criminal threat, a felony. He has not been charged by the district attorney's office, which is still investigating the case.

His arrest reportedly stemmed from an argument with his girlfriend, fellow singer Rihanna, shortly after they left a pre-Grammy Awards party.

Both were nominated for Grammys and were scheduled to appear at the Feb. 8 awards show but canceled at the last minute. Brown surrendered to authorities just as the show was getting under way.

According to police, Brown and a woman began arguing as they were traveling in a car shortly after the Feb. 7 party. The fight escalated after they got out of the car, and Brown had left by the time officers arrived.

After Brown's arrest, gum maker Wrigley announced last week that it was suspending an ad campaign featuring Brown plugging Doublemint chewing gum.

1. Conceding that Brown and most other men are stronger than their wives and girlfriends, many insist on framing domestic violence as a crime perpetrated only by men against women. This notion is false. The fact that men seldom report domestic violence accounts for some part of this myth, and the reluctance to report is no doubt partially driven by fears of stigma. However, the belief that a women should be excused when she slaps or scratches or hits a man is as much the product of bias as the belief that women deserve the same. Suppose a woman, such as Rihanna, breaks a bottle over a man's head, she should face the same legal consequences as a man. Ordinarily, this should include jail time. 2. Men must report the domestic assaults to police and ensure that their (hopefully former) wives or girlfriends are prosecuted. When sentencing an abusive woman, judges should be aware of any bias to excuse a woman. The fact that a victim of any violent crime is able to retaliate by striking back is legally irrelevant and is never a mitigating factor in sentencing. 3. Seldom mentioned--but probably most common of all in domestic violence--is a situation where both engaged in assault. This accounts for one reason that domestic violence is under-reported by women and rarely reported by men.

Lotus19: Comic relief? Because I see things different from you, my opinions are comical? Interesting.

I can see that you are just like a lot of people who if you do not agree with their way of thinking then they just totally disregard what you are saying, ok, cause since I don't know you I really don't care if you agree with me are not, I will how ever stop waisting breath on you, cause you only want to see things the way you percieve them to be. Have a very productive life with that mind set of yours.

I'm on to your comic relief routine but I'll humor you anyway....I don't think this is a story that falls under media suppression. It's one thing to be biased and not report certain aspects of a story..but as I mentioned below...if it had already been reported as you claim, you should be able t o pull it up.

BUT I did find one story about bruises on Chris...the bruises were on his knuckles. 'cept..they didn't show his face...so I don't believe it was really him..but I will if you' insist.

I want to see the pictures, until I see the damage i am not going to condemn him. Also men should never hit women, but women should never hit men regardless of whether or not they are smaller or weaker. Little guys dont get to hit bigger guys up side the head and say "dont hit me cause I am little", If that is the case here, but bottom line nobody knows anything. I found myself defending Chris Brown cause so many people first reaction is to throw him in jail when they have really zero facts. Typical Americans, judge others harshly first, find details out later. This country of mine really loves revenge.

If I saw a bigger man beating up on a guy who was smaller and weaker, someone he knew he could easily take in a fight just cause the boy was acting brassy, then I would think the bigger guy was being a bully. If the man was stronger than the smaller dude he could very easily just subdue him not beat him up--then he is just being a jerk.

Just because the two men are human beings with equal rights doesn't mean it is okay for the bigger guy to beat the smaller weaker man up no matter what the idiot was saying or doing.

Its' called using good judgment and restraint.

Besides, I'd judge anyone who put somebody in the hospital...

I am sorry Trinity29, but if her injuries were as bad as reported, they would have charged him on the spot, that would have been all the evidence the needed.

This is just my opinion: Air-tight case my ***, they don't know what to do, do they go ahead with the threat charge or chalk it up as a Lover's Quarrel, but how do they do it with out losing face.

I don't think any amount of what Rihanna did or did not do should justify the alleged violence. Lets assume Rihanna is everything that is rumored to be - needy, demanding, suspicious, and hey for good measure she gave Herpes to Chris from Jay Z. Even conceding to all of that, there is no reason, absolutely none for any kind of violence. If Rihanna was getting under Chris' skin that night, all he needed to do was walk away, The reason the DA has not charged him is not because he cannot be charged or because he hasn't done anything wrong, but because he is trying to build a tight case against him something where the legal loopholes won't survive. There will definitely be a charge. But to think that the DA's request for more evidence automatically means that there will be no charges is just naive. He is just trying to build a strong case so that his office is not made to look like a fool by Chris' lawyers.

Its a shame that in our "civilized" society today, a woman gets beaten like this and we keep trying to find ways to blame her, and say things like maybe she did something, maybe she made him mad, maybe she hit him first (which if she did, he needed to walk away and file charges and not beat her into pulp), maybe she provoked him, and none of these should ever be entertained.

I am at the point where who cares, it happened.

Either way it goes not everyone will be happy with the outcome.

Because those of us who feel that he was just defending hisself from this female, will be upset if he goes to jail, and those of you who feel that he was wrong for hitting her, will be upset if nothing happens to him. So who really cares, either way it does not effect my (or your) life in any way.

Just like I said from the begining he also had scratches and bruises. They have stopped reporting that little piece of info as soon as he didn't get charged with DV.

If they stopped reporting on it, you should still be able to find the original story on his bruises. Stories don't just disappear in this internet age.

If he was injured why hasn't he filed charges? And couldn't he very well have obtained the alleged scratches from her fighting him off as he beat her butt???? If she hit him or provoked it he would have already said so to save his own butt...

They need to get rid of domestic violence and just start charging people with assalt. I SWTG, so many people dismiss it, as if it's Okay! She probably deserved it!!!

If you think that...you have been abused, or think it is okay to abuse...is it okay to beat kids, too?

Chaimirija, they wouldn't care as much if this had been their mother, sister, cousin. Chris Brown is a MALE celebrity and a good looking and like OJ, it has to be the woman's fault.

Typhanie, you do not get arrested without probable cause...and, the reason men are not supposed to hit women is CUZ THEY IS A LOT BIGGER AND CAN REALLY REALL REALLY HURT YOU

plus, there is a reason the term 'wife beater' is in the culture...it is not quite the same as henpecked, now is it?

Are you going to start spouting that bs about how in fact it is women who perp. most domestic violence?

" over what transpired" ????? Um, I think you mean over what you DID. but I suppose his lawyer probably advised against admitting anything.

Pastors and Parents... please. This guy needs therapy. It will probably be Court ordered but he needs to really take this seriously. Having something forced on you is very different from voluntarily asking for it.

First of all ya need to stop listening to the news. We were NOT there and it is always 3 sides to every story---his hers and the truth! Have u seen the interview she had last year with ET saying she likes to fight and fist faught her brothers all the time and when the interviewer asked her who would win she said that she won one time because she busted a bottle in one of her brothers face!!! Im NOT taking his side but we need to hear from both of them and then we need to let God deal with it because HE knows what went down that night and the one who was in the wrong will have to nswer to him!

Poster's first comment....

Seems like most of the people who are defending Brown in this have never logged onto this site before this incident.... Seems like it is the Chris Brown's PR team, hard at work trying to salvage some of his career....

Not going to work...
