GOP Leader Calls On Burris To Resign, Lawmakers Seek Perjury Investigation

CHICAGO — Just as Illinois was moving past the agony and embarrassment of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's ousting, the fellow Democrat whom Blagojevich appointed to the U.S. Senate was hearing calls for his own resignation Sunday amid allegations he lied to legislators.

Freshman Sen. Roland Burris released an affidavit on Saturday that contradicts his statements last month to a House committee investigating Blagojevich's impeachment.

"I can't believe anything that comes out of Mr. Burris at this point," Rep. Jim Durkin, the impeachment committee's ranking Republican, said at a news conference Sunday. "I think it would be in the best interest of the state if he resigned because I don't think the state can stand this anymore."

But an adamant and sometimes emotional Burris told reporters later Sunday that he hadn't done anything wrong and never misled anyone.

"I've always conducted myself with honor and integrity," he said. "At no time did I ever make any inconsistent statement."

Gov. Pat Quinn, who advanced to the governor's mansion after Blagojevich was ousted over corruption allegations last month, also called on Burris to explain the contradiction.

"My opinion is that he owes the people of Illinois a complete explanation," Quinn said, according to spokesman Bob Reed.

Durkin and House Republican Leader Tom Cross also want an investigation of Burris for possible perjury.

It's not clear what action state legislators could now take against Burris, said Dawn Clark Netsch, a Northwestern University law professor and former Illinois Comptroller.

"I'm not aware that anything quite like this has happened in any state before," she said.

Based on federal law, the state Senate could argue that Burris was a temporary appointment, then pass a bill calling for a special election to name a permanent senator, Netsch said.

But Quinn's hands may be tied.

"I don't see anything that the current governor could do, except to ask for legislation to ask for a special election," Netsch said.

Saturday's disclosure by Burris reflects a major omission from his testimony in January when an Illinois House impeachment committee specifically asked if he had ever spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other aides to the now-deposed governor about the seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

"Clearly, it would have been better if Senator Burris had provided this information when he first testified," said Jim Manley, a spokesman for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who was among the Democrats who only consented to seat Burris on the belief that there was no chance of "pay for play" politics surrounding Burris' appointment.

He said Reid "is reviewing the affidavit and will await any action by Illinois legislative leaders after they review the matter."

Manley and Christina Angarola, a spokeswoman for Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, both said Sunday that Burris informed the senators of the affidavit on Friday, but Angarola said Burris didn't provide a copy.

But Burris explained Sunday that he voluntarily gave the committee a Feb. 4 affidavit disclosing the contact with Robert Blagojevich because questioning during his January testimony abruptly changed course and he never got a chance to answer a direct question about Blagojevich's brother.

Transcripts of Burris' testimony, however, show he had opportunities to provide a full response to Illinois legislators. In one instance, when asked directly about speaking to Robert Blagojevich and other associates of the former governor, Burris consulted with his attorney before responding.

The affidavit, released Saturday by Burris' office after it was first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, said Robert Blagojevich called him three times _ once in October and twice after the November election _ to seek his fundraising assistance.

Robert Blagojevich's attorney said his client believes one of the conversations was recorded by the FBI.

Burris said Saturday he told Robert Blagojevich he would not raise money because it would look like he was trying to win favor from the governor for his appointment. But he said he did ask the governor's brother "what was going on with the selection of a successor" to Obama in the Senate and "he said he had heard my name mentioned in the discussions."

On Sunday, Burris added: "I did not donate one single dollar nor did I raise any money or promise favors of any kind to the governor."

Except his lawyer told him not to do so until he could check with the
Feds and their ongoing investigation of Blago AND at that time he promised
a supplemental report after talking to the Feds.

Done.

Illinois Republicans need to go home to their own troubled districts and
help voters attempting to survive Part One of the Bush GD Legacy.

Without prompting, Burris corrects the record. What is wrong with that? I wouldn't spend a penny on this and I would let the people of Illionis correct during the next election if they so desire.

Yes, I am sure the Republicans would love to have the Democrats lose a ote in the Senate.

They just got their butts kicked on the Stimulus Bill. By the way Burris voted "yes" on the Stimulus Bill.
That made the 60 votes in the Senate.

Just think, if the Republicans can knock a vote frm the Senate total, I am sure they would be happy.

Democrats should be so stupid?

Before being a Democrat, I am an American. Any politician who engages in corruption or other illegal acts, regardless of their party, does an injury to us all, and therefore should be put on trial. We Democrats have to be the party willing to uphold the law, because to let it slide because he's one of us makes us no better than the Karl Roves and Alberto Gonzaleses of the world.

Being the party of the Constitution and the party of the law means that at times we must smack our own. If Sen. Burris broke the law, he should resign.

I totally agree. Wrong is wrong, no matter what political group you're in. Burris knew exactly what he was doing the whole time. His play on words is just an excuse and now he's trying to save himself. He should NOT have taken that position in the first place. Shame on him.

I will reserve judgement until we do get karl Rovin to testify. I will also take anything rethugs say with less than a grain of salt. Theres probably no one in the Illinois congress that was not hit up by Bl. ago This is just a distraction and old news.

THE DEMOCRATS HAD THIS 11 DAYS AGO...... DON'T LET BURRIS GO , HE IS THE BEST BET TO GET A GOP SEAT IN 2010

burris is a pathetic character in a shakespearean tragedy, an old man who feels he is owed something by society due to the trailblazing he did, albeit suffering enormous prejudice as a black man, even though he did not EARN the right to be in the US Senate....bad example for young african americans

Boy, is this a sad story!!! I just see it as a guy who was not able to get the recognition the regular way (by being elected) and so he jumped at the chance to make his mark on history by being nominated by the alleged felon governor who was his friend to a job that would make him get better connections. I don't care how black the guy is, if he did not disclose this information during the questions both in Congress, before they sat him, and with all the other investigative bodies that asked him about this appointment, he should lose the seat. Pure and simple. And I am black! I think the Dems need to look at what kind of ethical culture they want to perpetuate. This is not good!!

If Burris lied to Congress, he should be held to account for it. But would some one please tell me why the Republicans have their knickers in a twist over this? They sat silent through eight years of very destructive lies that came out of the Bush Republican White House, lies that took us to war, lies that cost thousands of Americans (and unknown numbers of Iraqis) their lives. And where is the Republican outrage over that? As far as I can tell, it doesn't exist.

They do not have their knickers ina twist...THEY were the ones whom insisted on seating Burris when they thought that they could make Harry Reid look like a ra*c*ist for not seating him. The GOP is made up of nothing more than a pack of disingenious jackals.

Good point. Plus, "how" did Burris lie and/or purger himself when he was never asked about Blago's relatives?

The Democrats lose a seat in the Senate, the Republicans win. Obama got 60 votes on the Stimulus vote. Burris was a "yes" vote. The Bill squeaked by.

So Democrats should be so dumb. The Republicans will pick up help any way they can.

That's smart politics.

Has everyone forgoten that it was the GOP that wanted Burris seated and that it was Obama, Reid and the Dems whom did NOT want to seat him?

I didn't ........
See what happened!?

come on ,,,,Chairman Obama and Durbin and Reid were implicit in this ,,, as it ended up they needed his vote for 60... They just hoped this would have blown over or not been exposed

Are you an idjiot? First of all, had Burris not been appointed, the new Illinois Democratic Governor would have appointed another Democratic whom would have voted lock-step with the other Democrats. Second, Obama had 60 votes with or without Burris anyway Ted Kennedy was available to vote should the need have arisen. Go back to freepers!!

Did anybody really expect much from a Blago appointment?
Ah, Illinois politicians!
08:50 AM on 02/16/2009
What an embarrassment for democrats. Burris should never have been seated. Where is the new era of truth and honesty that Obama has touted? If the democrats don't clean this up they are as guilty of corruption for expediency as republicans are. This kind of backsliding is why I dropped my democratic registration long ago. Burris lied on TV and in confirmation testimony. He is a perjurer, isn't that a crime? We need to get these kind of lowlifes out of Washington. Enough of this bs.
10:33 AM on 02/16/2009
Obama can't force others to follow his example. You GOPers make yourselves look like fools when you attempt to somehow blame Obama for this
08:22 AM on 02/16/2009
He's already proven himself to be a liar more than once. There is no reason to believe him now. Democrats should get on board, show some integrity and cajones, and cut this bozo loose now, before it gets worse. We have worked very hard to try and restore honesty and integrity to our government. The longer this festers, the more ammunition the sanctimonious, self righteous Republicans and jesus lovers will have to spew their never ending rhetoric. This will become a much used and favorite distraction from the bigger issues facing all of us.

You are absolutely correct. The way to deal with this is to issue a statement that the facts will be investigated and the chips will fall where they may without interference and with complete transparency.
We don't hide. We don't unfairly accuse. We aren't ashamed. We insist that it be handled according to the letter of the law. We do these things because we are a party of law and of integrity. That's the story line and that's the way to handle it.
