SNL Republican Meeting Mocked In Opening Skit, Dan Aykroyd Guest Stars (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:05 PM ET

Dan Aykroyd returned to Saturday Night Live last night to guest star in the show's opening skit, which pokes fun at Republicans for being the party of opposition and literally nothing else. They argue over whether Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh are smarter and decide the best line of attack is against the Obama kids.

Also on the show, Alec Baldwin hosted, the Jonas Brothers were the musical guest, and Cameron Diaz made a surprise guest appearance. See those skits here.

I'm surprised GOP supporter Lorne Michael let it air. Guess ratings mean more.

Best part of the skit was what it said about Rush/Hannity. I think the insult to them was much more powerful and would be taken in much more deeply by those morons, than any direct name calling or negative characterization. I picture them actually cringing where normally they just throw insults off their moss-covered backs.

Its not supposed to be funny the laugh out loud type of comedy. It was converying a message about how rediculous the opossing (Republican) party can be and their strategy to gain a majority again. The Everlasing GOP Stoppers.

Well, SNL is pretty much supposed to be "laugh out loud" funny -- particularly the cold open.

The problem here was that it seemed more like reportage than comedy.

Can someone explain what the Nancy Pelosi character was doing at the Republican meeting? That was unclear. Was she supposed to be playing someone else?

She wasn't supposed to be Pelosi, because Pelosi was the one calling Dan Aykroyd on the phone.

The funny thing about this "skit" was that there was no element of hyperbole. That's literally the comportment of republicans in the beltway and on AM radio. I enjoyed watching it nevertheless, because it demonstrated perfectly just how out of touch, ignorant, naive, and oblivious Republicans are hitherto.

I'm sure this was a great idea in a pitch meeting. But it wasn't funny.
08:29 PM on 02/17/2009
I think it doesn't seem funny to some people because it seems too real. Parody is suppose to contain an element of exaggeration- that's what makes it funny. But no amount of intended exaggeration seems outside the pale of the Republicans' behavior, including going after the Obama girls. Says more about the hopelessness of the Repubs own self-created image than it does a lack of humor on SNL.

Not far from the truth! It's all about power with the Republicans and to Hell with everyone else. Take Rush "treasonous" Limbaugh's statement that he hoped Obama failed for example. If a democrat ever made that statment about George Bush, I haven't heard it. It''s a disgusting thing for any true American to say and borders on treason. The ReSMUGS would love for the Democrats to fail even though it would send this entire nation into a dark abyss from which we might not recover. If they had any sense and patriotism, they'd hope for success and brighter days. They disgust me!

I guess those who don't think this is funny just don't get it.

And I'm laughing at you, because you probably don't get that comment either.

Maybe someday you'll develop what it takes...be patient sweeties...the ability to understand humor other than the bathroom type does take some time for many folks.

As funny as this was...it's not that darn far from the truth. The Republicans always learn all the wrong lessons.

I thought the sketch was brilliant.

They managed to show EXACTLY how pathetic, moronic and out of touch the republican leaders really are and the absurd lengths to which they will go in order obstruct and sabotage any kind of process to get the economy back on track.

The republican leaders, for the most part, are not in Washington to serve the interest of the American people, but their own short-sighted goals.

Thank you Saturday Night Live for reminding us that we still have toxic republican idealogues in government who will do almost anything to stop progess and rational thought.

Agreed. I saw it as dark comedy, which isn't always the laugh-out-loud type.

Best line: No one is as smart as Rush Limbaugh!!!
