How The Recession Could Be Poisoning Your Home

The recession is being used as a springboard for a lot of green initiatives -- the stimulus alone has people thinking more about mass transit and alternative energy solutions. And even if those things aren't being taken advantage of, at least they're on the table.

But there are ways that the recession can sneakily make our lives a whole lot less green -- especially if we're trying to cut spending, according to a New America Media story on toxic substances in cheaper cleaning products:

"Cheap doesn't mean safe," said Harrison, who works for Greenaction, an environmental justice group that works with city residents. "That's it in a nutshell."

The ultimate goal, said Cynthia Knowles, a toxics reduction specialist with city-sponsored group SF Environment, is "to let residents know what's safe when they go into a store."

Knowles knows there is a connection between cleaning products bought in a store and health at home.
