MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - A scheduled speech by radical-turned-professor William Ayers is causing dissension at Millersville University in central Pennsylvania.

A spokeswoman says the university has received dozens of calls and e-mails about plans for Ayers to lecture future teachers at the university on March 19.

Spokeswoman Janet Kacskos says Ayers' supporters see it as a matter of academic freedom, while his detractors say his background will hurt the school's reputation.

Ayers was a member of the radical Weather Underground 40 years ago. Nowadays, he's a professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago and a member of Chicago's intellectual establishment.

The Pennsylvania university's Academic Cultural Enrichment Committee invited Ayers to discuss his involvement in reforming Chicago's public school system.
