CHICAGO — U.S. Sen. Roland Burris insisted Monday he voluntarily sent state lawmakers an affidavit outlining contacts with ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother prior to his Senate appointment and was not prompted by federal agents investigating the former governor.

"It was done because we promised the (impeachment) committee we would supplement information in case we missed anything," Burris said outside a South Side church before meeting with religious leaders.

Burris released an affidavit over the weekend in which he admitted Blagojevich's brother asked him for campaign fundraising help before Blagojevich appointed him to the Senate.

The disclosure is at odds with Burris' testimony in January, when the Illinois House impeachment committee specifically asked whether he had ever spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other aides to the now-deposed governor about the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

The discrepancy could mean Burris perjured himself.

But the Democratic senator remained adamant that the Feb. 4 affidavit was merely a promised supplement, not a contradiction, to his testimony before the committee and was not requested as part of the federal corruption investigation of Blagojevich's administration.

"There was no change of any of our testimony," Burris, 71, said. "We followed up as we promised the impeachment committee. ... The information that's being reported in terms of that this was done because of a fed statement is absolutely, positively not true."

Blagojevich appointed Burris to the Senate Dec. 30, three weeks after the governor was arrested on a federal complaint that he tried to trade the Senate post for campaign cash or a high-paying job. The House impeached him and the Senate removed him from office Jan. 29.

The affidavit's release prompted state Republican leaders to call for Burris' resignation and a perjury investigation while members of his own party, including Blagojevich successor Gov. Pat Quinn, say they would like a full explanation from Burris.

According to the affidavit, Robert Blagojevich called Burris three times _ once in October and twice after the November election _ to seek his fundraising assistance.

The disclosure reflects a major omission from Burris' testimony in January.

Burris said he never got a chance to answer a direct question about Blagojevich's brother, and submitted the Feb. 4 affidavit to clarify.

However, transcripts of Burris' impeachment committee testimony show he had opportunities to provide a full response to Illinois legislators. In one instance, when asked directly about speaking to Robert Blagojevich and other associates of the former governor, Burris consulted with his attorney before responding.

Robert Blagojevich's attorney has said that his client believes one of the conversations was recorded by the FBI.

Burris said Sunday that he told Robert Blagojevich he would not raise money because it would look like he was trying to win favor from the governor for his appointment.

"I did not donate one single dollar nor did I raise any money or promise favors of any kind to the governor," he said.

But he said he did ask the governor's brother "what was going on with the selection of a successor" to Obama in the Senate and "he said he had heard my name mentioned in the discussions."

Following the Peoria County Democrats Presidents Day Dinner on Monday, Burris said he has no plans to resign, calling the current firestorm politics.

"What's going out on the airways is confusing to the public and making me look like I'm some criminal," he said, according to the Peoria Journal Star.

Yes, this is my lying stand right now, but I'll send you a follow-up set of papers after being confirmed that will list the lies that I did'nt talk about when before the committee. Please let me know if you come up with any lies that I forgot to include at any time.

This man is the worst kind of bureaucrat---the kind that gives all public servants a bad name. This is abman without honor, witout morals, without any sense of right and wrong.

He knows only how to feed his own vain sense of entitlement and glory.

The only way he can redeem his sacred honor and that of the seat he has wrongfully taken, is either to resign immediately, or, promise and carry through on finding and supporting a winning successor.

Perhaps, then, he could find some peace and stop pretending he is electable. He's not, and I am looking right now to help fund his primary challenger.

Burris needs to resign immediately. He has lost all credibility. Over the past three days, his story has changed twice. Each change is worst than before. I'm not sure what the Illinois constitution calls for, but if he resigns then the governor can appoint a new senator. If the state legislature invalidates his appointment, then they can call for a special election. If the Dems want to keep that seat, then they need to pressure him to go. I am tired of these overly prideful, lying, hypocritical, egotistical bastards who overstay their welcome. He needs to be "bitch slapped."

I am finding it increasingly difficult to follow Burris's logic, but think I know why. It doesn't exist. Apparently, if you freely volunteer supplemental information that contradicts earlier testimony, it's not really a contradiction. What would he call it? A plot-twist? What an embarrassment.

Perhaps the logic lies with Blago. He is known to be an ardent admirer of Nixon, is it possible he orchestrated the Burris appointment knowing that Roland had contact with brother Rob? Since his political career was doomed, why not some payback for tricky Dick for the loss of his Presidential election in 1960, when he lost Illinos. The vote count from Cook County pyschologically scarred Nixon so much that even though he had McGovern beat hands down in 1972, he approved the Watergate break-in of the Dems Hdqtrs.

This is just really bad timing, with everything going on, politicians of both parties are being dishonest and self-serving at a time when the people in this country need decisive and trustworthy leadership. I think that in retrospect, Obama and Reid should have been harder, not everything is good for peace sake. I no longer wonder why people are getting more angry by the day.

As a citizen of Illinois, I yearn for the day when Illinois politicians will quit embarrassing me with this kind of crap.

Dems got themselves into this. I knew this would happen and was urging Obama and Reid to grow a pair as well and simply say no, he cannot be in the Senate. Reid and truthfully Obama caved.

What a shame, one more distraction. I consider myself and progressive Dem, but that does not mean you cannot side step your party or simply do what is best. Let be honest, if we follow this example, in the end mainly progressive ideas will follow, but sh** will get done.

But here's the thing...#1, Obama has no control over Senate business, #2 Legally speaking there was nothing Reid could have done to disallow Burris getting seated.

The fault lies with the Illinois congress. They should have called for and funded a special election.

I want this clown gone ASAP. If not Illinois Dems will definitely lose the seat.

Harry Reid grow a spine!
