The Stamford Police have released the frantic 911 call Sandra Herold made after her chimpanzee began his violent rampage.

Listen to the terrifying call via Fox 5 News:

Text from the AP:

HARTFORD, Conn. — A 200-pound domesticated chimpanzee who once starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola was shot dead by police after a violent rampage that left a friend of its owner badly mauled.

Sandra Herold, who owned the 15-year-old chimp named Travis, wrestled with the animal after it inexplicably attacked her friend Charla Nash, 55.

Watch video from ABC about what happened Monday:

Nash had gone to Herold's home Monday to help her coax the chimp back into the house after he got out, police said. After the animal lunged at Nash when she got out of her car, Herold ran inside to call 911 and returned armed.

"She retrieved a large butcher knife and stabbed her longtime pet numerous times in an effort to save her friend, who was really being brutally attacked," said Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin.

Nash was in critical condition Tuesday after suffering what Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy called "life-changing, if not life-threatening," injuries to her face and hands.

"There was no provocation that we know of. One thing that we're looking into is that we understand the chimpanzee has Lyme disease and has been ill from that, so maybe from the medications he was out of sorts. We really don't know," Conklin said.

After the initial attack, Travis ran away and started roaming Herold's property until police arrived, setting up security so medics could reach the critically injured woman, Conklin said.

But the chimpanzee returned and went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars, Conklin said. Travis knocked the mirror off a cruiser before opening its door and starting to get in, trapping the officer.

That officer shot the chimpanzee several times, Conklin said.

The wounded chimpanzee fled the scene, but Conklin said police were able to follow the trail of his blood: down the driveway, into the open door of the home, through the house and to his living quarters, where he had retreated and died of his wounds.

Herold and two officers also received minor injuries, police said.

A message seeking comment was left Monday night at Herold's home.

Conklin told reporters the chimp was acting so agitated earlier that afternoon that Herold gave him the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in some tea. Conklin also suggested the animal may have attacked Nash because she was wearing her hair differently and perhaps wasn't recognized.

The chimpanzee was well-known around Stamford because he rode around in trucks belonging to the towing company operated by his owners.

Police have dealt with him in the past, including an incident in 2003 when he escaped from his owners' vehicle in downtown Stamford for two hours. Officers used cookies, macadamia treats and ice cream in an attempt to lure him, but subdued him only after he became too tired to resist.

At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herolds told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a stemmed glass. He also brushed his teeth using a Water Pik, logged onto the computer to look at pictures, and watched television using the remote control, police said.

When he was younger, Travis appeared on TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot, according to a 2003 story in The Advocate newspaper of Stamford.

"He's been raised almost like a child by this family," Conklin said Monday. "He rides in a car every day, he opens doors, he's a very unique animal in that aspect. We have no indication of what provoked this behavior at all."

I can not resist from putting my two cents in. Basically, it seems we all agree Travis should of NEVER been anyone's pet.
The window has been opened to help these Chimpanzees. It is so easy to contact your state representatives, senators , governor because of the internet. Ask them to change the law and make it illegal for anyone to own Chimpanzees. All of the chimpanzees that are pets, in entertainment , and in research should go to sanctuaries.
Chimpanzee abuse and neglect should be against the law. They do not have any choice, and that is why we need to use our voice and help them.
You can also go to "Save the Chimpanzee", and Neav's Project R&R, sign their petitions, or even Care2, if you care.

" We have no indication of what provoked this behavior at all."
Says it all does it not? Wild animals do not belong in suburban towns! I hope this woman has her but sued off! I want selfish people who insist on taking animals out of the wild ( their home ) and putting them in cages to go to jail when these animals get loose and Attack humans! This goes too for those who train dogs to be vicious and bloodthirsty for fun , profit and intimidation. This is not the first time this Chimp has got loose , this time I believe it's owner should be put in the Cage for the Crime accomplis to attempted murder

Indeed, a chimp is a wild animal.
and this is a tragedy.

However, as some other folks have commented--

We err to chalk it up to animal behavior alone.

This underestimates the cognitive/psychiatric effects of advanced Lyme disease and the potential influence that it may have had on this chimp's behavior.

Behavior departures and reasoning deficits occur in humans with the progressed disease so one would expect it moreso in a wild animal.

Lyme disease is not just a rash with flu-like symptoms.
In fact, most of the time there is no rash at all.

It is a multi-system disease affecting the brain, central nervous system, autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, musco-skeletal, etc

VERY good point about the factor of Lyme disease in this tragedy.

Lyme disease is somewhat of a mystery in the medical community and perhaps one other good effect from this extremely sad incident (in addition to bringing attention to teh plight of wild animals kept as "pets"), is that Lyme disease will be discussed and more understanding brought to the fore.

Ok who let her have the chimpanzee as a pet? Who has a chimpanzee as a pet? This is absurd! Why do people think that domesticating animals will take away their viscious nature. Wow she took it a bit too far with the chimp man. Just a bit too far! I hope the lady is ok but I highly doubt she will be the same! Do not have wild animals as pets!

Having a wild animal as a pet is dangerous enough but then I saw on the news that she fed the chimp lobster tails and filet mignon. (I thought chimps were vegetarians.) Serving the chimp wine is just crazy.

Chimpanzees are omnivores. They'll eat small mammals, including baby chimps. I once saw a film of two chimps ripping a baby out of its mother's arms and eating it.

People should not be allowed to have chimpanzee's as pets. When did this become okay? Hopefully this will serve as a painful example and laws will change. A sad and completely avoidable tragedy.
01:17 PM on 02/18/2009
It is against the law to keep primates as pets in 20 states.... the other 30 need to adopt the same policy...

I know.. monkey on human murder is really getting out of hand. It seems like every time I open up a newspaper there is another mugshot of some thug monkey mauler. When will our government finally stand up for families of monkey murder victims and do something to end this recent rein of terror.

Are you a sociopath? This story is no joking matter! A woman had her face and hands torn from her body, and her friend is emotionally traumatized. For you to make light of this tragedy is disrespectful and callous and shows an utter lack of compassion. Have you always been mean spirited, or did you have to work at it?

Wayne Pacelle, the CEO of the Humane Society of the US, has a column addressing this incident on the HSUS.org site.... It's definitely worth a read. Among his analysis is the following:

"If the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had listed all chimps as “endangered” 20 years ago as it should have, no private citizen in America could legally possess a chimp for use as a pet. But in a cave-in to the biomedical community and other users of chimps, the Fish and Wildlife Service came up with a convoluted “split listing” of the species—designating the wild populations as “endangered,” but the captive populations “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. This latter, less stringent designation, coupled with a set of lax special rules for chimps, allows the buying and selling and keeping of chimps as pets to continue. This bizarre regulatory scheme also allows biomedical labs, roadside zoos, and movie and advertising trainers to exploit chimps."

I don't want anyone to think that I'm blaming this woman for what her chimp did because I'm not. I blame prescription drugs for making all animals crazy, including humans. The drugs will eventually destroy all of our minds if we don't stop taking them.

I don't understand why the fact that the owner giving the chimp some tea laced with Xanax is not considered the prime reason for this chimp's actions. This drug sends PEOPLE crazy so imagine what it does to other animals. Good grief charlie brown, the chimp was drugged.

If the owner gave this animal a prescribed human drug, that is probably what drove the chimp berserk. Human prescription drugs are dangerous to humans so what do you expect them to be to other animals. I'm not at all surprised that this chimp lost it after taking the drugs. I'm just sorry he had to do so much damage before he was put down.

Best wishes to this poor woman. Listening to the terror in the owners voice after she called 911 is the most horrible thing I have heard in awhile.

If this poor woman survives, I hope she gets all the help she needs, including a face transplant if possible, like the women in France who was mauled by her pet dog.

Are you KIDDING? I'd hate to see your idea of serious.
Just because they're non life-threatening does not mean they're "not that serious"!

No matter how cute and cuddly a wild animal may be, it is still a wild animal with instincts of its own. My childhood experience as a 12-year-old mistress of a coy dog taught me that. In time, he became more coyote than dog, reverting to a more feral state. Ordinary canine restraints no longer worked and no fence could contain him or keep him out of neighbor's chicken yards no matter how well-fenced. He began to spurn ordinary dog food in favor of the partially-consumed carcasses of small wild life he caught in the nearby woods, leaving these rather grisly remains on our front lawn. All of this was coupled with increasingly more aggressive behavior, except that he was rather territorial and possessive toward me. He once got along fine with all members of the family. Now he had become MY dog and I was HIS human being! It became increasing difficult to control this animal and there were rising complaints from our neighbors and I was very much afraid that he would hurt someone, but the local dog pound was utterly unable to apprehend him. Finally, the local authorities told my dad that we would have to engage sharp shooters to put down this creature, which we did.

Wow. Interesting story! I know you loved the coy-dog but unfortunately his brain was missing some vital frontal lobage which is vital to domestic dogs being able to fit into our families. So sad he had to go out like that.

What an interesting story! I'm sorry to hear about the outcome, though, and that you had to lose your beloved pet. I've never known anyone who had a coy-dog. What kind of dog was the coyote mixed with?

Once an ape is no longer a baby and it grows to be a 200 pound ape, it can't be domesticated. I wouldn't be surprise if her friend in the hospital sues her. Hopefully the woman recovers pray to God.
