WASHINGTON — Public records show disgraced financier R. Allen Stanford owes hundreds of millions of dollars in federal taxes.

The records show four federal tax liens against Stanford totaling more than $212 million. The liens are from 2007 and 2008.

Federal officials charge Stanford with bilking investors out of billions of dollars by claiming unrealistic returns. His bank is closed following a raid Tuesday.

Stanford is known for an extravagant lifestyle, including private jets, friendships with congressmen and big spending on sport sponsorships and charity.

When I was working at the bank as a teller in my early years, a millionaire told me that honesty and poverty go hand in hand. If you want to be poor be honest and I never forgot that statement. The rich are liars and crooks and that is why they will always be rich. If it wasn't for this financial meltdown, they would have continue to get away with the fleecing of America.

as shocking as the fraud of stanford and maddoff, let's all remember that trillions of dollars of wealth were legally taken from the economy, from tax payers and shareholders - e.g. united healthcare's offering of ONE BILLION dollars in severence pay to bill mcguire - later lowered to 500,000,000 because of some illegalities or irregularities - at one point, maybe 2005, his compensation of $124,800,000 constituted @ 5% of the company's net income - this is not an isolated incident - doctors and hospitals and self funded union health plans are asked to give back $$$ so that the large insurers and hmos and boards of directors of companies can keep their fat cats fat - same in other industries, and as we've seen, in the financial and credit industries too - little guys stuck for the bill, big guys walk off into the sunset with billions stashed away - and most of it was not illegal under the 'me first' greed ethos of the conservatives/centrists -

LOL. the IRS tried to scam me by saying they didn't get my tax return on time. They wanted me to pay a fine and late fee of 75.00. The thing is....... they tried this before....soo.....now.... I always send it certified return receipt. It took 2 months after sending them my proof (certified return receipt, of course) to get cleared. and this guy gets away with whaaatt?

I say the IRS needs to go after clowns like this. D**n rich turkeys don't pay taxes and the rest of us get stuck with the bill. If all of the rich paid taxes like everyone else, just maybe we would not be in this mess.

The IRS is the real scam on american society....AND, our taxes pay for it.

I'm one of those Democrats who's not too cra.zy about Nancy Pelosi. But there's one thing I agree with her on. One of the major factors contributing to the rising national deficit over the past 8 years is the failure of the wealthy to pay an appropriate amount of taxes in proportion to the amount of money they spent. Republicans want something for nothing. They're hypercri.tical about entitlement programs but they rake more off the backs of the middle class than the poor ever thought about taking. They continue to be hypo.crits.

One of the most confounded questions I've had all of my life is why white collar cri.me is not treated with equal disdain in our court with all other cri.mes. In a country with our professed values, how does this happen? The impact on the lives and greater good of a society can be much more damaging than a neighborhood dru.g deal gone bad. Yet the sentences seem almost impossible to obtain. I don't get it. I realize the question will never be answered but I'll never let it go.

There is a difference between making a genuine mistake in paying taxes and avoiding them as this guy seems to have been doing. If the government went after every wealthy individual AND corporation that uses crafty accountants to evade paying their share of taxes, we probably wouldn't be in the mess we're in. I hope all theses bums finally get to understand how the rest of us live - we play by the rules, pay our taxes and we live within our means. Yes, it's boring, but at least we're not living off the backs of other people.

Owes taxes? Does that mean he will be nominated to Obama's Cabinet?

Chris, you repugs seem to forget that your nomination for President was caught owing taxes on one of his 7? houses and you seemed to think that was just fine. Also, your VP nomination was just presented with a $17,000. tax bill for not reporting per diem receiv ed while working from her home. It is fine when the repugs do it, but lord pity the demoncrats.

How does someone who owes $200M in taxes even get to be walking around on the streets? And now he is missing? This is just unbelievable.

And we've been lead to believe that all these supersonic rich people have just worked hard to achieve what they have. Yea right. They've been lying, stealing, breaking laws, stepping on peoples back, not paying taxes and just generally scamming people to get what they have. They've just been doing it in a $2500 suit and tie.
