Christopher Hitchens Beat Up By Lebanese Thugs During Street Brawl

Hitchens

UPDATE: Hitchens' fellow traveler, Michael Totten, gives the full blow-by-blow of the attack, including photos of the sign defaced by Hitchens, and recounting how a Lebanese policeman refused to help them moments before the impending ambush and how they, along with journalist Jonathan Foreman, fled from the mob in a taxi.

Here is an excerpt of Totten's account of the attack:

We knew it, too, because six or seven furious men showed up all at once and faced us in the street. They stepped in front of the taxi and cut off our escape.

None wore masks, which was a good sign. And I didn't see any weapons. But they were well-built and their body language signaled imminent violence...

Christopher was the target. He was the one who had defaced their sign. One of the guys smacked him hard in the face. Another delivered a roundhouse kick to his legs. A third punched him and knocked him into the street between two parked cars. Then they gathered around and kicked him while he was down. They kicked him hard in the head, in the ribs, and in the legs.

Jonathan and I had about two and a half seconds to figure out what we should do when one of the SSNP members punched him in the side of the head and then kicked him.

I stoically accepted that I was about to get beaten myself. The fear drained out of me as I was reasonably sure they weren't going to kill us. They didn't have weapons or masks. They just wanted to beat us. There were too many for us to fend off. We lost the fight before it even began. I could have called for backup myself, but I didn't think of it - a mistake I will not make again. I have my own muscle crew on speed dial now for protection.

UPDATE: Hitchens is still in Beirut and went ahead with a scheduled lecture entitled "Who are the revolutionaries in today's Middle East?" at American University in Beirut on Wednesday night, Huffington Post has learned.

**********************************

The assault on Christopher Hitchens' body continues - he's been waterboarded, body-waxed and suffered through countless hangovers.

In the latest incident, Hitchens sustained gashed knuckles and bruises in a vicious street brawl with shoe-shopping thugs during a Valentine's Day night out on the streets of Beirut.

Hitchens, the chain-smoking, hard-drinking, intellectually ambitious Vanity Fair columnist, was beat up during the altercation, according to several blogs.

Hitchens was apparently visiting Beirut at the invitation of the Hariri-Saudi group, affiliated with the assassinated Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, when he defaced a poster for the Syrian Social Nationalist party and was assaulted by some members of the SSNP who happened to be walking by, according to the Angry Arab News Service.

Hitchens was out with several other journalists - Jonathan Foreman and conservative blogger Michael Totten when they got into a street brawl on trendy Hamda Street, reports Forbes.com:

But later that night, three of our "scoop" brigade--Jonathan Foreman, Michael Totten and Christopher Hitchens--got involved in a street brawl with some thugs of a Syria-loving skinhead party called the SNPN after Hitchens rather gallantly insulted their swastika flag. On our way to a meeting with Minister of State Nissib Lahoud, Hitchens showed me the gashed knuckles and bruises suffered during the punch up. The attackers had apparently come out of nowhere on posh Hamda Street, where they had gone to buy shoes. "I was on the ground," Hitchens said, "and getting it in the head." It was a miracle they didn't pull Kalashnikovs.

The Angry Arab News Service wrote on Tuesday:

At the invitation of Hariri-Saudi group, Hitchens is visiting Lebanon. A source sent me this: "I dont know if you find this as news worthy or not, but Christopher Hitchens is currently in Beirut sponsored by the same group that owns that crap NOW Lebanon. He got in a few nights ago and surprisingly went out drinking. On his way out of the bar he saw an SSNP poster and wrote on it "Fuck the SSNP". There just happened to be some SSNP thugs near by--most likely asking people for their ID, and most likely to no avail--and saw him write on the poster and kicked his ass. He is still walking with a limp."

The Abu Muqawama blog later noted:

Update: This story has now been confirmed. Look, it's widely known that since the May 2008 events the SSNP guys have behaved like thugs in Hamra (where the ass-kicking took place). But seriously, would you roll into East L.A. and start writing over gang signs? I mean, is that smart? C'mon, Brother Hitchens, we're rootin' for you, but have a little walkin' around sense. He was probably at De Prague. Where the wait staff is, like, 90% SSNP. Abu Muqawama's Top Three West Beirut Watering Holes: 1. Barometre (cheap arak, great fattoush); 2. Captain's Cabin; 3. Danny's. (In response to a reader, the great Chez Andre closed sometime a little over a year ago. That hole-in-the-wall was great.)

The SSNP is in fact one of the only two intellectual parties in Lebanon and is the oldest party there. It does not call for the "conquest" of all countries of the fertile crescent, as someone suggested here, but rather holds the view that the people of this entire region form a single nation.

But it's truly interesting that Hitchens would solicit the help of, and give his endorsement and support to, the "Progressive Socialist Party," which is neither progressive nor socialist, and is run by a feudal, sectarian, warlord and criminal who is responsible for the death of thousands of Lebanese. Christopher Hitchens is merely advancing a neocon agenda of "creative destruction" for the region, which is why he finds it completely appropriate to ally with the Saudi/Wahhabi Hariri movement and with the sectarian, feudal Jumblatt party.

Thanks for pointing out the "finer" points in the SSNP's agenda, namely that wanting to unite all the peoples in a region under the Syrian nation is not the same as wanting to conquer it. And please excuse I am not buying it.
05:15 PM on 02/23/2009
I don't really care whether you buy it or not; although it's interesting that someone who has no clue about the SSNP or its philosophy can find himself/herself qualified enough to render judgments about it. And what's funny is that you come from a country which considers its greatest president one who waged an entire war in order to forcefully unite the United States of America. The point is that there is a difference between saying that all people within a given area form a single nation and calling for the "conquest" of group of countries. And it's quite amusing that westerners believe they have a right to divide countries as they please, but then have a problem with groups calling for the unification of these countries. As such, you have no problem with France and Great Britain dividing Syria into the fragmented statelets we see today, but apparently you have a serious issue with a group refusing such division. I think we'll stick to our position on this one.

Moreover, Saadeh stated in the Fourth Principle of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party that "the alleged purity of the race or blood of any nation whatsoever is a groundless myth." He goes on to state that "this principle would free the nation from blood-tie bigotries that are apt to cause the people to neglect the national interests and to direct their energies towards internal strife, corruption and apathy. For those Syrians who believe or feel within the country or nation that they are of Aramaic extraction would no longer be actuated to fan Aramaic blood-loyalty, so long as the principle of Social Nationalist unity and the equality of civic, political and social rights and duties are guaranteed, and no discrimination between one blood or race in Syria is made. In the same way, those Syrians who claim to descend from a Phoenician (Canaanite), Arab, or Crusader stock, would no longer care also for any other than the cuase of their community, within which all matters affecting them would take place, and on whose fate would depend the fate of their family and of their descendants, their hopes and their ideals." But of course Mr. Hitchens would never let facts get in the way of his vituperations and vitriol.

It's funny that a group of westerners that don't even read Arabic and have no clue about the history of the SSNP will accuse such a group of being "Nazi" and "Fascist" only because they believe that the Cyclone of the Party bears a resemblance to the Swastika. The SSNP is the antithesis of Nazism and Fascism because its philosophy is one of SOCIAL nationalism; i.e. a nationalism that includes all elements of society within the definition of the nation, as opposed to the RACIAL nationalism of Nazism and the POLITICAL nationalism of Fascism.

In addition, if you read the Genesis of Nations, a book on sociology written by the founder of the SSNP, Antoun Saadeh, you would find in it a harsh criticism of European racism which was not based on scientific principles, according to Saadeh.

As much as I usually despise Hitchens' bloviating, I have to say respect. He walks the walk at least. It's called civic courage, and a lot of people could use more of it.
12:13 PM on 02/22/2009
I rarely agree with Hitchens but at least he not only talks the talk he also walks the walk. Sometimes expressing your opinion will get your @ss whupped. Smart people are not so smart at times. Quick recovery Mr. Hitchens.

Question What are "SSNP thugs" doing in the country that is NOT THEIR OWN?
02:46 AM on 02/25/2009
These are local Lebanese SSNP thugs. The SSNP has always been a Lebanese political party; it has a Syrian branch as well and was influential in Syria prior to 1955 but it was outlawed and driven underground by the Syrian Baathists (not to be confused with the Iraqi Baathists) in the period 1955-2005.

Try reading up before posting.

Social Nationalist party???

Does their leader have dyslexia?

And what is an ad. for such a Syrian zi-na party doing in Lebanon?! No one seems to ask this embarrassing question.
02:55 AM on 02/25/2009
Yes, it's an arse-backwards adaptation of nazism: cash in on the appeal to glorious nationhood but play down the racism, all men are brothers but only if they support our cause. Things might have turned out quite a bit differently if Germany's nazis had merely been ruthless imperialists and not genocidal chauvinists as well.

Asking what the SSNP is doing in Lebanon is about as perspicacious as asking why an Austrian led the German nazi party.

I am very disappointed by those who think of themselves as liberals taking pleasure in the mugging of Christopher Hitchens. Your bathroom scrawl says more about you than it does about Hitchens. I'm glad he wasn't alone on that Beirut street, or he may have been killed by those fascist types.

Hitchens is a rare scholar who can aim his razor-sharp wit and learning at anyone, left or right, on public airwaves. Here is a sample from 2007 of his quick mind, as he utterly demolishes Sean Hannity, Alan Colmes and Ralph Reed as they blubbered about the greatness of Jerry Falwell:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doKkOSMaTk4

Many on the left can't think past his support of the invasion of Iraq. I, too, disagree with his stance. However, if you examine his writings (see http://www.hitchensweb.com/ ), you will learn that he arrived at this position because of his deep knowledge of the history of depredations suffered by the Kurdish people, the brutality of Saddam Hussein and his hatred of religious fundamentalism of all types, including Sharia law. Hitchens can be faulted for miscalculating the complete corruption and incompetence of The Bush Crime Family in how they mismanaged the invasion, and everything else they touched.

Hitchens proves that even humanitarians can be misguided. Back in the 1980s and 90s, I was deeply grateful for his Nation columns against Reagan and Bush-41's Central American murderous policies, and to Serbian atrocities in the Balkans.

The problem is, Hitchens became the very thing he spent years mocking, the holier-than-thou, I'm right-you're wrong, hit-you-over-the-head type of punditry that turned him into an elitist bl-ow-hard. And his anti-religion rants just pushed him farther out of the good graces of the left, because they weren't a well-thought argument, they were just mean spirited. In addition, he was so in the pocket for Hillary, that he could not, or would not, see the popularity nor the sense of a President Obama.

These latest events just seem like the rantings and accusations of a desperate man, struggling to hang on to his own sense of importance.

Hitchens displayed great bravery, not armchair liberalism, and certainly not desperation by defacing that SSNP poster. He endeared himself to many Lebanese by his defiance of this extreme right wing group.

Syria invaded Lebanon in 1982. They brutally occupied Lebanon until 2005. Before then they practiced torture and murdered civilians. Syria is widely suspected of being responsible for the assassinations of prominent journalist-professor Samir Kassir and beloved former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005. Syria withdrew after mass protests rose up after these killings.

The Syrian Social National Party, whose poster Hitchens defaced, advocates further expansion of Syria. The Wikipedia entry for the SSNP says they want to conquer "Lebanon, the Hatay Province of Turkey, Israel, the Palestinian territories, the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, Cyprus, Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait"!!

My hat's off to Hitchens and to anyone else who defies such hatemongers.

Here, here. Hitchens and his ideas have pushed the boundaries to greater fairness, greater freedom, and greater equality. He seeks to cast light on the dark road of religious fascism, and absolutism and the backward nature of "faith" based thinking.

Islam is a great religion that must reformed. The current quarrel within Islam has spilled on to our hard fought ideals. Just because Islam is a developing world religion, does not mean and is NOT a type liberation theology.

Hitchens has sought to show that Islam (and other monotheistic religions) have used faith as a cloak and a legitimate tool to control and order violence aginst our ideals. Just look at how they (Islam) treat their own people when their people dissent. And, then think what they can do to us.

Check out that link I posted above to the YouTube video on Jerry Falwell. Falwell proved that some Christians are also quite capable of using their religion to justify all types of bigotry.

"Intellectually ambitious"? At what point does Christopher Hitchens get to be simply an intellectual? We don't refer to Albert Pujols as "athletically ambitious."

Christopher Hitchens has issues, like an earlier Mickey Rourke or something. I think he needs serious therapy.
