HARTFORD, Conn. — Geronimo's descendants have sued Skull and Bones _ the secret society at Yale University linked to presidents and other powerful figures _ claiming that its members stole the remains of the legendary Apache leader decades ago and have kept them ever since.

The federal lawsuit filed in Washington on Tuesday _ the 100th anniversary of Geronimo's death _ also names the university and the federal government.

Geronimo's great-grandson Harlyn Geronimo said his family believes Skull and Bones members took some of the remains in 1918 from a burial plot in Fort Sill, Okla., to keep in its New Haven clubhouse, a crypt. The alleged graverobbing is a longstanding legend that gained some validity in recent years with the discovery of a letter from a club member that described the theft.

"I believe strongly from my heart that his spirit was never released," Harlyn Geronimo said.

Both Presidents Bush, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and many others in powerful government and industry positions are members of the society, which is not affiliated with the university.

After years of famously fighting the U.S. and Mexican armies, Geronimo and 35 warriors surrendered to Gen. Nelson A. Miles near the Arizona-New Mexico border in 1886. Geronimo was eventually sent to Fort Sill and died at the Army outpost of pneumonia in 1909.

According to lore, members of Skull and Bones _ including former President George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush _ dug up his grave when a group of Army volunteers from Yale were stationed at the fort during World War I, taking his skull and some of his bones.

Harlyn Geronimo, 61, wants those remains and any held by the federal government turned over to the family so they can be reburied near the Indian leader's birthplace in southern New Mexico's Gila Wilderness.

Their lawsuit also names President Barack Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Army Secretary Pete Geren as defendants.

"I want them to understand we mean business," said Harlyn Geronimo, who lives in New Mexico. "We're very serious. We're tired of waiting and we're coming after them."

Neither members of Skull and Bones, who closely guard their secrecy, nor the Russell Trust Association, the organization's business arm for tax purposes, could not be reached for comment.

Justice Department spokesman Andrew Ames said the government will "review the complaint and respond in court at the appropriate time."

Fort Sill spokeswoman Nancy Elliot declined to discuss the lawsuit, but said officials have always maintained there is no evidence supporting the descendants' claims.

Yale officials declined to comment Wednesday, saying they had not yet seen the lawsuit. Spokesman Tom Conroy noted the Skull and Bones crypt is not on Yale property.

Membership into Skull and Bones marks the elite of the elite at the Ivy League school. Only 15 Yale seniors are asked to join each year.

Members swear an oath of secrecy about the group and its strange rituals, which include devotion to the number "322" and initiation rites such as confessing sexual secrets and kissing a skull. The atmosphere makes Skull and Bones favorite fodder for conspiracy theorists.

Its most enduring story is the one concerning Geronimo's remains, and in 2005, Yale historian Marc Wortman discovered a letter written in 1918 from one Skull and Bones member to another that seemed to lend validity to the tale.

The letter, sent to F. Trubee Davison by Winter Mead, said Geronimo's skull and other remains were taken from the leader's burial site, along with several pieces of tack for a horse.

"The skull of the worthy Geronimo the Terrible, exhumed from its tomb at Fort Sill by your club and Knight Haffuer, is now safe inside the T _ together with is well worn femurs, bit and saddle horn," Mead wrote.

Wortman, however, has said he is skeptical the bones are actually Geronimo's.

Geronimo's descendants say in their lawsuit that they want to uncover any information that people know, but have been keeping to themselves.

"To assure that all existing remains of Geronimo and funerary objects are recovered by Geronimo's linear descendants, the Order of Skull and Bones and Yale University must account for any such articles that are or have been in their possession, or on their property, and persons with knowledge must provide any facts known to them concerning the claims," the descendants' lawsuit says.

If the bones at Yale aren't those of Geronimo, Harlyn Geronimo believes they belonged to one of the Apache prisoners who died at Fort Sill. He said they should still be returned.

Harlyn Geronimo wrote to President George W. Bush in 2006, seeking his help in recovering the bones. He thought that since the president's grandfather was allegedly one of those who helped steal the bones, the president would want to help return them.

Ron Rosenbaum wrote an excellent piece on these clowns years ago. Some of the stuff they have recruits do is quite startling, sort of a cross between your idea of a satanic mass, football team initiations, and way too much homoerotic knick-knacks to be of any good.

Go get 'em Geronimo's kin!

It's not what they do to "get in".... It's what they do after they are out and for the rest of their lives.... Watch "Good Shepherd" to get an idea of the control that they are believed & feared to have over the world, from the CI A to the Captains of Industry... All working together to get theirs, while leaving the common man behind...

Its called the illuminati, the Free Masons are another cooperating body. Skull and bones is their frat.
The truth is there is little that isn't being controlled by the descendants of the first 50 families. Or some such...

I'm no 33rd degree, though.

There seem to be a lot of misconceptions made by a lot of people on here about Skull & Bones. This is not an ordinary fraternity with wild parties such as Oliver Stone staged for the frathouse sequences in "W". This is a highly occult-based secret society bound by a Hegelian philosophy involving a sort of manifest destiny, not of the fraternity per se but all of humanity, and that the means towards achieving this end are made by pitting thesis against antithesis to create a new synthesis, and that the end result would be the arrival at a sort of historical Absolute. If Geronimo's remains were stolen as has been the rumor for some time (along with the fact that they supposedly also have some of Hitler's gold), this would never have been meant as a schoolboy prank but would have been intended to show some reverance for the talimanic power of the remains of a great warrior like Geronimo and would have been used occultly to help further their cause. Whether or not their cause is just is for history to judge, but I have a suspicion the Order advanced its agenda by leaps and bounds during Bush's administration, and it would have gone forward even if fellow Bonesman Kerry had won. Obama would never have been able to shine forth if S&B had not laid the groundwork through acts of "constructive chaos."

metatron1970 says (of the strange cult-like society of Skull & Bones): "This is a highly occult-based secret society bound by a Hegelian philosophy involving a sort of manifest destiny, not of the fraternity per se but all of humanity, and that the means towards achieving this end are made by pitting thesis against antithesis to create a new synthesis, and that the end result would be the arrival at a sort of historical Absolute." I was wondering where you were able to obtain this information. It certainly sounds somewhat like philosological-mania, but I am intriqued just the same. I affirm there is much JQ Public never even thinks about happening among the elite. Howerver, please let us read some of the original soures of your interesting thesis. That way it won't be just talk, there will be a referenced basis for more comments. I am not disparaging your post in any way, I just would like more facts. "What kind of Absolute? How is the constructive chaos related to Obama? Thank you

Skull & Bones mostly consists of rich kid chicken hawks who would have never and will never reach the greatness of Geronimo ! Desecration of Geronimo's grave and keeping the artifacts as a trophy needs to end ... Skull & Bones needs to be disbanded ... it is a stain on Yale and on the American character!

Yep... it is prudent to view anyone who attended Yale with suspicion....

DickCheneey Attended Yale (but dropped out).... Both Bushes attended Yale and were S&B.... William Donaldson (the SEC Chairman appointed by Bush in 2003) was also S&B...

a group of people who commit crimes together is a criminal enterprise known as a "gang". its illegal to receive or possess human remains for illegitimate reasons. this is grounds reasonable search and seizure. shouldnt the police go where the gang members are and arrest them accordingly? we are a nation of laws no?

If there is a criminal enterprise would the RICO laws apply? It would be interesting to see Skull and Bones members in court defending themselves against RICO charges. Just wonder what kind of gang they would be in prison.

Here's a question for all of those posters who are questioning the validity of these claims against the S&B Society. The 1918 letter from the S&B member described the items stolen from the grave. The items that he described in his letter included -- along with Geronimo's skull and femur bones -- a silver bridle and saddle horn. How would this man know that such items were buried in Geronimo's casket? I have consulted many sources -- including the internet: a luxury that this member lacked -- to conduct significant research on Geronimo's burial, and I have found no mention of any such items -- though I have no reason to doubt that they were indeed buried with him.

With two different members of the S&B Society from different generations each having written letters (including actual pictures of the stolen items from one of those members) describing the same crime, more than enough evidence exists to begin the proceedings to hear this case out in a "court of law": the European way of discerning the truth. Let's bring this case to trial to try to discover the truth. Let's put members of the S&B Society on the witness stand and hear what they have to say under oath.

I'm so glad Kerry lost. We didn't need a Skull and Bones dem anymore than we needed a Skull and Bones repub. Bunch of spoiled rich kids trying to come off as scary with their haunted house antics and immature pranks.

Big difference, pal: Kerry outgrew his fratboy phase by the time he returned from his second tour of duty in VietNam, as is evident to anyone who has watched/read his testimony to Congress as a founder of VietNam Veterans Against the War. George W. Bush never outgrew his.

So wouldn't you think Kerry (and Bush) need to come out now and say the right thing? ...Neither (that includes Kerry) has done so yet.

The whole situation sounds disrespectful. If they do have his remains, they need to return it to the family.

Or if they have ANYONE's Remains, they should return it to the family... the only reason they should be using any human being's remains is if they have formal consent from that person or the family...

Here's wishing good luck to Harlyn Geronimo in his quest.

He's going to need it because I don't think he can expect honest dealing from the hard core elitists at Yale, and especially the S&B Club.

I don't think Mr. Geronimo can expect a lot of help from the feds either. They haven't helped an Apache for 150 years.

My hope is Mr. Geronimo eventually gets satisfaction and can return his famous ancestor's remains to where they rightfully belong.

For Prescott Bush and his spoiled, corrupt, profane cohorts, the children of wealth in the hands of toxic people, children of unearned privilege, not one of them, as a man, could qualify to lick old Geronimo's boots.

Old Geronimo outsmarted, out ran, out maneuvered, out thought , and out planned, and out fought every general the Mexicans sent against him, and every American general to except he only broke even with Gen. George Crook, and was finally crushed by Gen. Nelson Miles who used 75% of the man power of the US army against Geronimo, and about forty men.

Militarily Geronimo could do it all, he was the best squad leader, then the best company commander, then the best general on every field of battle he fought on.

One of his big quests in life was to find that rare white man who would tell him the truth about anything.

I'm sure Harlyn Geronimo's quest will be quite the same.
