GOP Fighting For Money From Stimulus They Opposed

Boehner

First Posted: 03/21/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:05 PM ET

House Republicans, as a group, may take great pride in the goose egg they offered President Obama's stimulus package. But now the unanimous opposition is struggling to bring that money home.

Republicans will be working hard to make sure the money they opposed ends up benefiting their home districts, highlighting the political tightrope they walk in this economic crisis. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is watching House Republicans -- and reading local media -- closely and is only too happy to highlight any happy talk about a stimulus Republicans voted against.

Back in his home district, Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) found some nice things to say about the plan.

"Within the stimulus package there is some Pell Grant money, which is a good thing. It helps students be able to pay for their education and that's kind of a long term stimulus effect there. I mean obviously that's not gonna provide a job in the next 120, 180 days, but the ability of someone to get an education is an economic development tool," Luetkemeyer said at a local college. He was there, in another inside-outside Washington twist, to celebrate an earmark for a college building.

He lamented that there would be far fewer such earmarks in the future. "If they go back to the rules, it will make it very difficult to get earmarks through the next two years because number one we don't have any more money, we just blew it all on this stimulus package. Although, we're gonna have to print some more in order to be able to bail out the financial institutes and the automobile manufacturers," said Luetkemeyer.

Ken Spain, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said that the quotes aren't hypocritical, but rather demonstrate that Republicans did support a stimulus in general, just not the one Democrats presented to them.

"We would like to thank the DCCC for circulating these comments. They are proof-positive that Republicans stood willing and ready to support commonsense measures in the stimulus package until Nancy Pelosi unfortunately chose to undercut President Obama's message of bipartisanship by including absurd pork-barrel spending projects such as millions to protect a mouse in the San Francisco Bay, golf carts for government bureaucrats, and STD prevention funds. Republicans said 'yes' to a true stimulus package, but unanimously said 'no' to putting the politics of pork before the needs of the middle class," said Spain.

Rep. Don Young (R-AK) put out a press release saying that he "won a victory for the Alaska Native contracting program and other Alaska small business owners last night in H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

In California's Inland Empire, battered by the economic downturn, the mostly Republican delegation is happy the stimulus passed, too, according to local news reports.

"Even the Republican lawmakers who oppose the bill say such projects are needed in the region," the local paper reports.

"All along he has believed infrastructure spending, in particular, should provide a boost to the Inland Empire's economy," a spokesman to Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) said.

"While we philosophically have different opinions, we're obligated to make sure this money is spent properly," said Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA). "All of us in the Inland Empire will do what we can to direct as much money as we can."

UPDATE: Think Progress finds a press release from Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) along the same lines:

Last week, Bond led a bipartisan group of Senators in introducing an amendment to help provide needy families affordable housing. Bond's amendment provides $2 billion to fund low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) projects that have been stalled by the financial credit crisis. As part of the Democrats' spending bill now signed into law, the Senate unanimously accepted Bond's provision. [...]

This provision will have a real impact in Missouri, especially for low-income, working families in need of safe and affordable housing. ... Bond's amendment will save more than 700 housing units and create 3,000 new jobs in Missouri.

UPDATE II: McClatchy beat the GOP up about this on Friday.

There is no way that a bill of this scope could possibly be pleasing to everyone. There may be aspects that appeal to some and other will be peeved that their pet project went unfunded. To accommodate everyone would have doubled the costs.
It is one thing to condemn the bill on that basis. That is understandable. But to refuse the money when it will benefits your state will never ( are you listening) happen, no matter what people such as Jindal may say. See it for what it is. Styling and profiling for the cameras and the folks back home who write those campaign contributions. It should be a given that when it comes to a politician and money, they ONLY thing they turn down are their collars.
That being said, I don't even know if it rises to the level of hypocrisy any more. It is so much a part of the business as usual that I can't label it as such. some will say if it quacks like a duck, etc., but the multitudes of them wwe have been exposed to requires a new word of phrase be entered into the lexicon.
Guess we could call it business as usual.

Ok all you Republicans. We watched you play this game on the Clintons! Do not give them the money no matter what now. Then let the constituants in theoir states deal with them. If they have computer access, & do'nt believe the radio or tv, they will eliminate these idiots. The people are learning when Republicans say tax cuts, they mean for themselves & the elite.

Transparent government is of course good for citizens, mostly because of the political disadvantage to dishonest politicians.

I can not argue about Nancy Pelosi. Her "Impeachment is off the table", took her off the table for most of us. If Californis smartens up they will put a different Dem in, & if the house is really honest, it will put Dennis Kucinich in her place.

I agree 100%

Pelosi should have helped Kucinich impeach former president George Walker Bush when she had the chance to show some courage, but that is no excuse for Ken Spain to lie about her. It is funny that his made-up scandal is a mouse though.

Come on Republicans, show some guts, listen to Crackhead Rush and do not accept any stimulus
funds from that Socialist Government, who is trying to stiffle the Media.

John Seven Houses McCain has gotten it down pat, you poor jerks who tried living the American dream was out of place to even think about acquiring a home. Peons has no right to entertain such dreams.

Then we have Sean Every Body Look at me Hannity who is one all Republicans should really listen to, I mean his daily rantings has just got to mean something, the guy really really tries to make sense and look cute at the same time. Unfortunately he fails at both. Another thing did he ever explain to his followers his association with the Texas con man.

Before I go folks is it just me, or are the Repubs and their agents with Media access just walking around screaming at the moon.

Lately, every time I hear a Republican he/she reminds me of the God Father of Soul (James Brown) when he sang this line " Just Talking Loud and Saying Nothing" only problem they ain't got no SOUL.

The Americans I believe we are will suck it up and hopefully not elect people who will repeal some of the laws FDR set out there to protect us from what happened over this last 8 years. We will learn from the 2nd time around NOT to let law intended to protect us be repealed or ignored or modified by a few people in power. I'm not against business, I'm against letting business do whatever they want. I'm against 4 or 5 hundred people running the world economy. Many of those are people like Madoff who supposedly owned billions in assets. We ought to start looking into that. Consider the 600 people in Congress and maybe another 1000 in our government and other governments who run the world. We are letting a few thousand people maybe 2 or 3 thousand people run and destroy the world in which over 6 billion live. Why? Not that I dont blame them, I do blame them but we haven't been paying attention to what they are doing and we need to start paying attention. Now would be a good time while the investigate and make and pass more laws.

Attention Americans: Any stimulus funds that come to your state, do so IN SPITE OF your ReTHUGlican representation in congress, NOT because of them!!

Give credit where credit is due! These funds come to your state compliments of the Obama administration's unrelenting efforts to move the bill through congress. Kudos, also, to all your Democratic congressman, Democratic senators, and the three GOP senators who prefer to be sane, rather than sorry.

It's their money numbn*ts!

Where do you think the Feds get the money?

Taxpayers!

The Fed makes no money, it confiscates it!

Bush doubled the national debt. Where do you think that five billion dollars will come from? Will the Easter Bunny bring it?
10:17 AM on 02/21/2009
the republicans who voted against the stimulus bill should not get any of the money for their district then they should explain to their constituents why they only want the billions to go to the greedy corrupt big wigs on wall street and not the general public who really need the stimulus

Wow it appears that the lines have been drawn! Should those who did not want to work on the stimulus package followers lose out on the rebuilding of America, with their GOP leaders? Will they have to stand by and watch other states profit from the stimulus package? Watch as they lose they're homes and jobs, because of the individuals that they sent to Washington, can stand proud of themselves that they did not vote for the STIMULUS package? Thank heaven that those of us who like our President believe in bipartanship, and therefore will share with them. We all want to work together to rebuild the great USA!

My head tells me that the representatives that voted against the recovery bill should not benefit it in their respective districts or states. My heart tells me that is the wrong thing to do because of the people and common good. However, my head begs the question, how do they know that their reps are not voting on their behalf unless they suffer at the hands of their representatives?

To solve this head v heart contest, I believe that the GOP members that voted against recovery should have to tell their citizens why the bridges and roads are not going to be rebuilt in their towns, cities and states. I think they should have to tell them directly over the local and state news networks that they are going to "ride out" the recession/depression like the good old days of Hoover. I do think that people should get what they vote and ask for. If they don't like what is going on they can relocate to an area that has working, shovel ready projects taking place. They could call this the new Progressive Migration in America. Look out GOP for 2012 you will not be a major player anymore.

I think there should have been amendments leaving projects in their state out of the stimulus. Let THEIR people write their Senators and Representatives angry they will be left out or joyous that they have been left out. What these people did was try modern successionism and we dont have to fight a civil war this time.
The best thing we can all do is visit the first gov website for the Congress and write, email or call every legislator who originally voted it down and ask them next time to make sure any money for any project or intrastructure work is left off the legislation if it's in their state or district. And that they should refuse now any money going to them. The tax breaks and paying for the stimulus is trickier but any projects or infrastructure money they should decline. And do it now not 3 years from now.

Republicans do'nt take hints. Whoever voted these people in as their representatives are required to be represented by them. Since there are still red states, which I consider straight Nazi state as long as they stay re. Then let them live the way they voted for awhile to make them understand they're out of step with what being Republican really means.
I can think of no faster way to eliminate the neo con party of Republicans.

GOP is all about propaganda, packaging & BS the citizens ...They preach one thing but do the opposite ..just like the religious leaders who keep the sheep in control ..Same ole BS , wedge issues every election ...just look at the last 8 years ...
