It's not about ruining the Oscars. It's about ruining every Oscar-winning movie by telling you what happens at the end. The Oscars reference is incidental, simply the group of movies that they picked to 'ruin'. They could just have easily gone with 'ruin every cartoon movie in the last 50 years...' or 'ruin ever musical...' The Oscars were presumably picked as a grouping because it's Oscar season.

A couple of things:

Am I oversensitive or was that Middle Eastern accent at the end there a bit offensive?
Also, I think as I've gotten older movies like Braveheart seem less appealing than movies like Babe.
And finally, you're right about 1998's Oscars going to the least deserving nominee. I'd also include 2005, 2002, 2000 and 1994 under that category.
