The Telegraph:

Sayyid Imam al-Sharif, who goes by the nom de guerre Dr Fadl, helped bin Laden create al-Qaeda and then led an Islamist insurgency in Egypt in the 1990s.

But in a book written from inside an Egyptian prison, he has launched a frontal attack on al-Qaeda's ideology and the personal failings of bin Laden and particularly his Egyptian deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

This is the sort of thing that should be in the headlines of every mid-east and Arab news service. Guess what, it's not.

This is good news.

Let's hope that Obama's staff confirms this, gets copies of the materials and sets BHO to reading and studying... Something good will emerge from this - presuming the article is correct.

"Today, however, he believes the murder of innocent people is both contrary to Islam and a strategic error. "Every drop of blood that was shed or is being shed in Afghanistan and Iraq is the responsibility of bin Laden and Zawahiri and their followers," writes Dr Fadl."

Hmmm. It appears he thinks Al Qaeda had something to do with Iraq. Bush was right it seems.

try again. It's well documented that al Qaeda came to Iraq AFTER the US invasion. Bush's decision to invade was the reason al Qaeda got into Iraq in the first place; there was NO AQ presence when Saddam Hussein was in power.

Thanks for playing.

True, al Qaeda wasn't in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was in power, and what a paradise Hussein's Iraq was.

This is way too complicated for folks given to simplistic "you're with us or against us" thinking and for whom Islam and all its practitioners are "Islamofascists." Fortunately, we now have a president who isn't a simpleton. Perhaps he can initiate a policy that is less short-sighted than the last administration's uninformed and self-destructive "war on terror."

Maybe a little logic and compassion on the Muslim side, coupled with a little logic and reason on our side.......nah, that couldn't possibly work. Better to just go on blowing each other up forever and ever.

For those wasting their time analysing who is No.1 or who is No. 2 - Remember The Prisoner.

Q. "Who is Number 1?"
A. " You are Number 6."

You are analysing a USUK fairy tale that the USUK changes to suit the weather -

"In particular, Dr Fadl focuses his attack on Zawahiri, a key figure in al-Qaeda's core leadership..."

That's right. Because contrary to 99.9% of the info we get from Western media, Zawahiri is the No1 guy and Bin Laden is just the money man. I don't know why this lie has been so consistently peddled to us. It's as if the MSM can't admit to the inaccurate way they have always talked about Zawahiri as the No2. It will make them look incompetent.

Zawahiri recruited Bin Laden. He has always been the leader of Al Qaeda.

Bin Laden has been dead since Dec 2001.
This was reported many times by several countries with many eye witnesses.

The MSM here are only fooling those that want to be fooled.

I believe it. He looked sick back then and his living conditions can't be a nurturing environment. So, I'm with you. I think he's long gone as well.

Your assessment of Western media is a cliche that is no longer true. Western media encompasses alot of sources of global news. Anyone who looked an inch below the surface headlines in the West would know that Zawahiri was the intellectual planning component and Bin Ladin the finances & figurehead. There has been no lie consistently peddled, as you claim. You underestimate those who have Western souces of media.

Quoting from the article "twenty years ago, Dr Fadl became al-Qaeda's intellectual figurehead with a crucial book setting out the rationale for global jihad against the West. Today, however, he believes the murder of innocent people is both contrary to Islam and a strategic error..."

Couple of points: One, people really do mellow over time, so containment is a sensible alternative to war; and two, uh, who among us can trust Dr Fadl's writings from prison?

I know...my points, derived from the article, are internally inconsistent. That is the point.

Let's see some proof that this guy is who the article says he is. If he is the founding father of Al Queda then he needs to do some rethinking of his own philosophy
