TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian authorities have blocked two Web sites promoting the presidential bid of Mohammed Khatami, reformists said Saturday, in a first sign that powerful hard-liners might seek to thwart his challenge to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12 election.

Khatami declared on Feb. 8 he would run again for president, setting the stage for a major political showdown in coming months between the popular reformist _ who made dialogue with the West a centerpiece of his eight years as president _ and the country's ruling hard-liners.

His candidacy poses a serious threat amid popular discontent with Ahmadinejad over the sagging economy, and the action against the Web sites came as Khatami named leaders in charge of his election campaign.

The Web sites, and , were set up last summer in anticipation of Khatami's candidacy. They could not be accessed from inside Iran on Saturday, though they were viewable outside the country. Khatami's own campaign site, , was still accessible.

Links:

"At midday, we learned that our Web sites have been blocked. ... Closing down our Web sites means hard-liners are not going to tolerate Khatami challenging Ahmadinejad," Behrouz Shojaei, editor of one of the sites, told The Associated Press Saturday.

Yaari News, which Shojaei runs with other Khatami supporters, has reported on his candidacy, the reformist's views and growing support for his presidential bid. The other targeted Web site presented people's views on Khatami's candidacy.

Shojaei said the government was also likely angered after the sites reported that provincial officials bused people in to attend a rally where Ahmadinejad was speaking in the city of Yazd on Wednesday.

Ahmadinejad allies claimed that the relatively large crowd showed the hard-line president's popularity. It might also have been an attempt to strike a blow to Khatami, whose birthplace is Yazd.

Prominent Khatami ally Majid Ansari said blocking the sites was simply an attempt to increase pressure on reformists before the election.

"Reformist opponents assume they can block the path of people's understanding but people are wise enough to judge these actions," Ansari said.

"Blocking sites won't stop Khatami from challenging (Ahmadinejad)," he said.

Khatami's candidacy poses a serious challenge to Ahmadinejad, whose mixture of anti-Western rhetoric and fiery nationalism sharply contrasts with Khatami's tempered tones and appeals for global dialogue.

Khatami's decision to run against Ahmadinejad could significantly shake up Iran's politics, appealing to citizens disillusioned by the country's failing economy and Ahmadinejad's staunch anti-U.S. foreign policy.

Relations between the United States and Iran improved marginally during Khatami's eight years in office, and he encouraged athletic and cultural exchanges. But it deteriorated after the Sept. 11 attacks when former President George W. Bush declared Iran belonged to an "axis of evil." Ahmadinejad widened that gap after he was elected in 2005.

But Khatami's decision to run comes as President Barack Obama has signaled a willingness for a dialogue with Iran, particularly over the Islamic Republic's controversial nuclear program.

Hard-liners have vowed they would never again allow reformists to take control of the government and have used the Guardian Council, an election watchdog that vets candidates, and other institutions they control to block reformists from gaining power. It is unclear if the Council will move to block Khatami's candidacy.

Reformists have suffered setbacks in past years as hard-liners and conservatives have consolidated power. Hundreds of reformist newspapers have been shut down, and the Guardian Council barred thousands of reformist candidates from running in parliamentary elections in 2004 and 2008.

America may be sinking into the mire....but with oil trading at 35 bucks per barrel the Iranian economy will sink even faster. Throw in an earthquake or two and you will see real civil unrest. Best to keep our hands off that mess.

Can the people of Iran view this site? Which others? Does the internet have any effect on their elections? Are we debating about something meaningful? Did the CIA plant this story? Does even that matter?

Hard to care about a country who's people who go into the streets by the thousands, shaking their fists, burning the American flag as they shout "Death To America" which they have been doing since the days of the hostages in the 70's and still do as fervently today. They have already shown their ambition to join the modern world by electing a president that is second only to Adolph Hitler in racist, abstract idealism and hate. In some cases, people get exactly what they deserve in life. If that's true, he'll probably be re-elected in a landslide.

Here is the question: Who do the Right Wing Hardliners in Iran fear more?

Khatami or the United States.

My guess wold be Khatami.

Repression rarely works in a democracy. And will not work with a people who have hope of a better future.

Ahmedinajad was the Iranian George Bush. He did not deliver on his promises of a better economy.

The trick now is for the west top leave Iran alone. Any threats, and conflict will only give the Right Wingnuts the excuse to crack down. And force Iranians to support their government in a crisis.

The Reform Movement in Iran is the single most hopeful event in the Islamic world. We should nurture it.

By LEAVING IRAN ALONE!!!!!

Ah, democracy in action..this is what Obama will have to deal with: people who think it is fine to block websites of those who just might want to help bring Iran out of the Stone Age in terms of paleolithic views on how to treat women and how you treat, say, homosexulaity among its people...but I forgot that according to Ahmadinejad, there is no such thing as homosexuality in Iran. Delusional religious whackos are determined to keep Iran back from joining the world...ridiculous.

I am very confused by this line of the story:
"Khatami's own campaign site, , was still accessible."

This seems to negate the rest of the article

Iran is limiting free speech on orders from the Supreme Leader. Big surprise it is not.

Yet you have appeasers here trying to excuse this...now if Obama's team blocked websites of opponents here, how do you think that would go over? Some of you would of course approve since free speech only applies to YOU and YOUR viewpoints, no one else's.

i am married to an iranian american. my 2 young children have not yet seen their grandmother, who lives in iran. my hope and prayer is that Khatami is elected, and reform will take over Iran as it has been doing with Obama in our country. if we can heal this old rift, families will be properly reunited, trade will flow in many directions, and the middle east will be more stable. Inshallah.

Thank you for your special viewpoint...you are right, Khatami is Iran's only hope of moving away from a radical theocracy. As China managed to in some ways tone down rhetoric and rant, and become a significant power, Iran, if it was to change its hostility to the West, would become a dynamic and energetic power in its region, able to co-exist with countries it has had hostile relations with, like Israel. Wouldn't that be a great change?

And, like Obama . . .

Let us hope the Progressive Iranians will move Khatami much further than he is willing to go on his own.

Just like American Progressives must move Obama!

Both men are careful politicians. It is time for the people to lead.

seems the man already has a history of promising reform, freedom, etc. but then doing the opposite.

i thought this tidbit from wikipedia was interesting, though:

"2007 hand shaking incident

Khatami was criticised by the conservative press for committing an "unforgivable offense against sacred Islamic rules" in May 2007, after a video was released showing Mohammad Khatami publicly shaking hand with two female participants of a conference in Italy where he was a guest speaker. After initially denying the handshake had occurred, Khatami admitted he "might have shaken some hands, but I don't remember exactly".

Websites close to the conservative government of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that an increasing number of clerics and extremists in the holy Shiite city of Qom believed that Khatami should be convicted for his behaviour."

Am I supposed to be shocked by this news? Should I somehow just have had my mind blown, causing a total re-evaluation of my opinions on Iran? Is this story supposed to make me feel as if I went to bed living in one world yesterday and I've woken up today and everything is topsy-turvy?

Sorry. There is not a single surprise here.

All the moral relativism my fellow progressives want to sling around when talking about situations like this does not change the fact that the Iranian government is a horrible, hateful, backwards, WRONG regime. And, despite what many of my lefty brothers and sisters say and believe, such a government is extremely dangerous!

The United States has certainly done much in recent decades to exacerbate the problems of this region. But blame cannot be placed solely on the lap of the West. Look at those two very different thoughts. They can BOTH be true. Some cultures are poisonous...even more poisonous than a democratic republic. Gasp.

I agree. Unfortunately, some of our fellow progressives associate any condemnation of Iran with Bush and conservatives. This is a dangerous clerical regime that supports terrorism, wants to incinerate another UN member, and is developing nuclear weapons in an effort to establish hegemony over the region. Iranian youth are resisting its crazed leadership where possible and will hopefully push it in a more moderate, secular direction.

I hope you are right about the young in Iran who do not have the old revolutionary baggage tied around their neck and want to be free..there is no defense to how the clerics have run their country...the old story of how Brits and US caused hardship for the Iranians under the Shah and others is now ancient history to a majority of Iranians...they are not interested any longer in hateful rhetoric directed at us or at Israel.

"Some cultures are poisonous...even more poisonous than a democratic republic. Gasp."

Excuse me? Some cultures? Poor word choice I hope. as for the rest, no you should not be shocked - but you should be disappointed that when Khatami was pushing for dialogue with Clinton, we refused.

This is complicated. No one has love for the "Islamic" Republic. But we and the British (AIOC) did help pave the way - Mossadegh, SAVAK, shooting down an airliner, you know the rest...

The story people are missing is that there is a movement afoot, even within Qom there are reform-minded clerics. And yes "reform" IS relative - unless you're a neo-con who wants to spread Jeffersonian democracy across the world to flower and bloom in some mythical Candyland scenerio. Short of a complete revolution of the Ayatollah and his mullahs I will always be skeptical; but clearly Khatami or Karroubi are preferable to Ahmedinejad.

Clearly this censorship is not acceptable to the Iranian people. It may be ultimately run by mullahs; but believe it or not, there is such a concept as rule of law in Iran. The Guardian Council is manipulating it, only now, Iran is viral (remember the cleric sex tape?!). Hopefully their cynical ploys only push people to vote for practical conservative and reformist candidates, like the Majlis 2008 election.

Khatami is definitely better, not perfect, but better...Iran can go on blaming the US and Britain to doomsday, but what does that do to help the Iranian people become free of religious absolutism, oppression, repression and draconian policies? Time to let go the old hostilities on both sides, but with an understanding that as long as Iran is run by irrational and crazy mullahs, it will never become a part of the world and will remain a pariah state, as it so wholly deserves...the people can continue to allow themselves to be subjugated by the insane beliefs of religious zealots, or set themselves free of this horrible ball and chain they are attached to.

Iran has spent 20 years and billions of dollars plus it got the help of the Islamic bomb Designer Ali Khan.
But not to build a no.no..no.no.. to build light bulbs..
The rhetoric from ahmdjade about Is rael is a lie..he said he likes Is rael, not hate it.
And for the holocaust conference, it was to get more proof, not deny anything..

Persian is a hard language to translate
For example. the words The Zionists will be annihilated , if translated correctly, mean" can I have more grapefruit..

All you neocons are bashing a peaceful (marine barracks in Beyrouth) regime
(450 american hostages) whose leader want energy (hydrogen) to share with A tiny country (it will be destroyed) Is rael.
The state televisions, msnbc, cnn, abc, cbs, and pbs, owned and controlled by the Zi onts have manipulated the ayatollas agenda.

Well, I sincerely doubt that the blocking of websites will have any profound effect on Khatmi's run. Ahmadinejad is very unpopular with the Iranian people, and will most likely lose the election. If Khatmi wins, maybe he can at least temper negotiations with Israel, Ahmadinejad and Netanyahu would be a poisonous mix at the negotiating table.

You may sincerely doubt it, but that you do not get the symbolism or consequence to doing this means you do not understand the notion of freedom of speech...it is a direct threat to allowing Iran to become more open and to show it can be a democracy, not a theocracy, rooted in irrational beliefs.

We signal a willingness to potentialy talk and the supreme clerical council OK's Khatami (moderate who aknowledges Israel) to run.

We and others a few days ago screach URANIUM!! URANIUM!! iran has supposedly enpough uranium for a nuke (on unfounded rumore) and hardliners block the websites

We need khatami to win. The more rhetoric we spew against Iran will equal forces within Iran making sure Khatami does not win. The best help we can give to ensure Khatami winning and thus opening up dialogue we the USA (offered full concession to bush jr on nuke program when he was last in but bush jr ignored him = hard liners tossed hom out for amidimacrazy) and an Iranian aknowledgment of Israel's right to exist is to tone down all rhetoric / keep quiet

That's a brilliant idea...I wonder if we had toned down rhetoric against Nazis in World War II whether that would have gotten them to stop killing? In the same way, the Mullahs don't operate in a realm of rational thought...treating them with kid gloves or appeasing them is not the way to go...yes, we seek dialogue, but only with those who are willing to understand it...the Mullahs are not sane enough to.
