GOP Senator Jim Bunning: Justice Ginsburg Will Be Dead In Nine Months

UPDATE: Sen. Bunning has apologized for saying that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will die soon.

"I apologize if my comments offended Justice Ginsberg [sic]," Bunning said. "That certainly was not my intent. It is great to see her back at the Supreme Court today and I hope she recovers quickly. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family."

U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning predicted over the weekend that Ginsburg would likely be dead from pancreatic cancer within nine months, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported:

During a wide-ranging 30-minute speech on Saturday at the Hardin County Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner, Bunning said he supports conservative judges "and that's going to be in place very shortly because Ruth Bader Ginsburg ... has cancer."

"Bad cancer. The kind that you don't get better from," he told a crowd of about 100 at the old State Theater.

"Even though she was operated on, usually, nine months is the longest that anybody would live after (being diagnosed) with pancreatic cancer," he said.

Apology? No apology, Senator Bunning, but just further insult and hurt to millions of cancer survivors like Justice Ginsburg who day by day fight their cancer and win. While the medical care they receive is tremendous it is what resides in their hearts and minds that wins the day. I don't think this is exclusive to sleazy politicians, it seems to stem from the inability (refusal?) to take responsibility for one's actions. And it doesn't help that anyone with a public image to protect often has their apologies framed this way. I find it heartening though, that so many people are pointing it out, perhaps that'll let them and their publicists know that we're not buying these lame-ass, non-apologies. It also gives me hope that this won't become the way everyone "apologizes".
