Nadya Suleman Scared The Hospital May Keep Her Babies

LOS ANGELES — Nadya Suleman apparently has bigger worries than taking care of her 14 children. Talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw says she may have to prove she can handle the load, or else have hospital officials withhold her newborn octuplets.

McGraw said the 33-year-old unemployed mother called him Tuesday, distraught that Kaiser Permanente officials told her they were concerned about the babies living at her home in suburban Los Angeles.

"What she is telling me is that unless and until she has a better living arrangement, that they are not likely to release the children to her," McGraw told the Los Angeles Times.

Suleman has taped two episodes of McGraw's "Dr. Phil" show. The first was scheduled to air Wednesday.

Suleman gave birth to the octuplets Jan. 26 in Kaiser's hospital in nearby Bellflower. She has six other children, lives in her mother's three-bedroom home in Whittier and relies on food stamps and disability income to provide for them. The home is under threat of foreclosure and could be sold at auction beginning May 5 because Suleman's mother is $23,225 behind in her mortgage payments, property records show.

Kaiser officials declined to comment on Suleman's case.

"Any conversations that the mother may or may not have had on this topic are private and we could not discuss them," said Kaiser spokesman Jim Anderson.

Social workers evaluate parents of very premature babies to determine what services the children and family may be entitled to, said Vicky Bermudez, a neonatal intensive care unit nurse at the Kaiser hospital in Roseville.

The octuplets were born nine weeks premature.

"If they feel there's a risk to a baby, they contact Child Protective Services and Child Protective Services would make a determination as to whether or not there's a reason for concern," Bermudez said.

A call to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services was not returned Tuesday night.

Suleman has not responded to repeated interview requests from The Associated Press. Her phone has been disconnected and she no longer has a publicist.

Is the reality of her situation finally hitting her? When you are homeless and you have a baby, you can't leave the hospital until you give them a plan as to where you are going. You must also have car seats. Thats for healthy babies. Her children won't be leaving the hospital for months already due to their health problems from being premature. If they are real lucky and the only problem is getting their weight up to 5lbs it will still take quite a while (as was the case with a friend's grandaughter born 1 1/2 lbs just before Christmas who came home yesterday.)

I feel so sorry for this grandma...I watched an interview with Nadya and her mother and it was very clear to me she is not ready to be a mother to one let alone 14 children, she has some huge anger issues with her mother and she was constantly talking over her mother...this woman is going to need big time counseling and so will her children!

she will have no home shortly, and she will not be able to get an apartment. In Texas and Missouri (only 2 states I have ever rented in) you have to have so many bedrooms for so many children. I think the limit is 3 per room.

So she would need a 6 bedroom house or apartment. I have never seen a 6br apartment.

She should have the kids taken from her, she has proven herself to be mentally unstable.

For too many of my fellow liberals in the child welfare establishment, there is a mental asterisk when it comes to civil liberties. As long as you say the magic words "child abuse" it's o.k. to hold secret trials, it's o.k. to search homes and stripsearch children without a warrant, it's o.k. to deprive the accused of legal counsel, it's o.k. to detain children indefinitely based on a standard of proof no higher than "preponderance of the evidence."

Should we take away Nadya's civil liberties because we "don't like her" "don't like her choices" or we (so qualified to decide this) believe she's crazy? If we start doing this to one person we are setting a standard for all civil rights? Correct? The state pays for the children whether they are adopted or if they stay with her. Statistically children are always better off with their biological parents than they are in the foster care system. That's a fact and not how I "feel" about Nayda Suleman. Taking away one person's civil liberties sounds vaguely close to taking away liberties because someone doesn't like the skin color of someone else or the gender of someone else. Woops...wouldn't want to think about that, though. I agree, LYNCH Nayda!!

IF the kids are in a dangerous situation, they should be protected.

Protecting the kids doesn't require infringing on her civil liberties, the situation can be handled while still following due process. Sure, some people have gone overboard and insisted on things bordering on eugenics, but it's unfair to paint that as the view of all "fellow liberals".

And many of us ARE concerned for the safety of the kids, it's the reason for wanting the kids protected, not "we don't like her".

And "Statistically children are always better off with their biological parents" is contradictory.

"Statistically" means on average - there's no question that "ALWAYS" better off is false, since there are plenty of examples where kids have been better off in foster care. Sure, kids are probably USUALLY better off with the bio parents, but there are exceptions. And the situation needs to be monitored to make sure this isn't one of those cases.

This story gets more disturbing by the day. I am glad if that hospital does not discharge those babies to her. She can't handle all of this, her parents are tired and frustrated. I don't understand with all of these paid interviews between Nadya and her parents, why that mortgage is not paid up to date? How much more negative news do we have to hear about this mother? A million dollar porn deal! OMG Nadya wants all the attention and money, and this was carefully planned out. I feel it wasn't so much about being a mother, its all the publicity and money making. I have never read posts that intrigued me and grabbed my attention as the previous pages on this site.
While your comments regarding OctoMom are understandable, your posts convey a genuine concern for the 14 babies caught up in this nightmare. Many of you have given me insight into this situation that I had previously not considered.
I want to thank you all for sharing your thoughts and concerns.
And as this story continues to evolve, there very well may be unexpected events, I'll come back to HuffPo to read your posts again.

She made the cover of People Magazine this week, which she will no doubt frame and hang on her walls (when she gets some) so that all can see she is the celeb she planned to be all along. So that tells something about her opportunist nature.

Nadya is a spoiled brat and has been conning people for years just to get her own way. I don't believe a word she says anymore after all the lies I've heard that she told her own parents and previous boyfriends.
Nadya's parents have been supporting her and her 6 children for years and are bankrupt now.
Nadya needs a higher authority to say NO to her once and for all.
I hope the Hospital keeps those children right there until Nadya comes to her senses and accepts the wonderful help she can get from Angels in Waiting. I don't know why she hasn't accepted this help from the first day they offered.

Yes. Good. Terminate her parental rights and find capable, safe homes for these children. I've seen nothing yet that truly demonstrates selflessness and genuine concern for the welfare of her children. She's basking in the glow of media bliss and her babies are her props.

I think it would be really sad to remove the children from their family. While she may have some screws loose, she doesn't show signs of being abusive or negligent towards her children. The Dionne Quints come to my mind when I think about the possibility that they will be removed from their mother.. They did not fare so well. I think the doctor who gave her the treatments should take responsibility and help out! What a jerk he is.

No single parent - or married parent, for that matter - can give 14 children the individual attention he and she needs to become a functioning human being. That is why humans do not naturally give birth in litters. So if that isn't negligent, I don't know what is.

when children are not cared for properly, that can be considered neglect which falls under abuse
you may not see that but that is the case for children especially babies. how many arms does nadya have? she cannot care for these children and give them enough attention that they deserve or will
be needing (the odds of these kids coming out of the hospital without disabilities or issues that require around the clock care, is very, very slim) who will nadya rely on? her mum and dad? they are aging
and will not be able to do what is required to make sure these babies are fed and bathed and kept
healthy and certainly nadya cannot do it alone. she made a very selfish choice and could be she will
have to learn the hard way that people need to be responsible and make decisions with much forethought before doing what she has chosen to do. if she didn't have 6 children already, we would
of probably seen a totally different reaction towards this multiple birth...she says it was god's will?
god didn't implant those embryos, in fact she couldn't even conceive the god-given way of
conceiving...she had to do it scientific­ally...and then they couldn't even been fertilized the god given way...she bypassed that. i'd say god gave her his message by making her unable to get pregnant
and she defied his will by doin what she did...
