Tom DeLay Slams Obama's Address To Congress On Hardball (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/28/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:05 PM ET

Tom DeLay, appearing on Chris Matthews' show Hardball opposite Harold Ford, ripped into Barack Obama's speech last night before a joint session of Congress. DeLay called it "the most irresponsible, hypocritical speech I have ever witnessed," and that what Obama is talking about doing is "insane."

DeLay seems alone in his strident criticism, as the reviews across the board gave Obama fairly high remarks. Ford pushed back against DeLay, but the former House majority leader continued to rail against Obama.

Matthews also played a clip of prominent conservative David Brooks slamming Jindal's response to Obama, and Brooks was having none of this. DeLay dismissed the criticism: "take away the conservative moniker from David Brooks."

DeLay also made reference to Matthews' opening segment on the show in which the host discussed his bewilderment at the setting and tone of Jindal's rebuttal, saying to Matthews, "listening to your introduction, somebody is going to accuse you of being biased." Matthews did not look amused.

Watch the debate below.

There's a spin - the "democrat congress" ..... "tried the bailout, it didn't work". Sure that bailout was crammed down everyones throat at the last second by Paulson and Bush. After assuring everyone the economy was strong Bush and Paulson throw a 12 page bailout plan on the table asking for $700B, telling congress they had to act immediately to avoid total disaster. The plan said Paulson had to be in complete control, and no one could hold him responsible if something went wrong. I see now Mr. Delay wants me to believe it was the "Democrat congress" that caused all this mess. Sure OK. Isn't that called revisionist history?

Dear Republican Party, Please listen to Mr. Brain-Delay, The GOP needs to die so that it can be re-born from the ashes of its own disasters. I believe in the importance of a loyal opposition... too bad we don't have one. Third-rate, doctrinaire, obstructionist, light-weights, like the disgraced former speaker, will not revivify the Republican Party. This smirking poster-clown for a circus that just got run out of town is not a voice of the future but a wanted-poster from a post office of the past. Why would Tom Delay even suit-up to show up on TV, it's not like there's anything left to steal? Did he come just to tell us about the successes of the Bush administration? Or did he come up town just to put down the first president in over a decade who does not embarrass us? Good luck. Go back to Texas, Punk. You need to hang out where they're dumb enough to buy that bunkum.

It is nauseating to hear Republicans react to recovery plans with the same tired rhetoric they used to justify their rape of our economy.

Tom DeLay built his fortune on an exterminator business in Houston.

I think ol' Tom sniffed too much bug spray, and it affected what little gray matter he had between his ears.

It's good to see the weepublicans trotting out all the old ghosts from their past -- they must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel, if they're rolling out Tommy boy and Newtie G. to fight he last war.

No wonder they've lost the last two elections.

One of the biggest crooks in the history of America (second only to his buddy Jack Abramoff) has the nerve to even show his face in public let alone offer an opinion on anything??

Why do politicians like Ford need to call Delay "a friend"? He's a criminal! He belongs in jail and should not be given any platform from his garbage. I understand that Chris Matthew's wants to discredit him by letting him spew his obvious partisanship and lack of compassion for the real American citizenry but please...He's a fool.

Delay attempting to define what conservative is. What a joke. Kind of like McCain attempting to define Honor. It's sad to see people that don't have a clue and are so tied up in self-righteousness their grasp of reality is nonexistent.

Wait until the get slammed in 2010...then what will they say?

Why do we care about the rantings of a bitter and indicted FORMER politician? His views, like his former policies are full of "hot air" and lack substance. He needs to go back in hiding like he has been since he resigned for he has not been missed.

Why is that felon given air time?

Shame on Chris Matthews for giving it to him.

EXACTLY! I've warmed to Matthews since the 2008 Primaries and now catch his Gardball program daily. But I speed through (thank you, DISH DVR!) whenever he continues to solicit "input" from totally discredited resources. The sheer notion that felon DeLay should be afforded a platform to spout his message of hate and "no!" is ludicrous. Shame, shame, shame on your Chris! (Note that your cohorts Olbermann and Maddow don't pander to whatever crowd you think DeLay legitimately addresses.)

Chris you can do better!

Spelled it right this time. Maybe it means crook in Spanish. Yep: short for delincuente.
