ABC:

Sounding off on hiring problems that we reported earlier this week, a leading economic adviser to President Obama today said it was "shameful" that the "weak" Treasury Department is so understaffed that Secretary Tim Geithner is "sitting there alone".

Start raiding universities. Start hiring grad students in a variety of disciplines. Start hiring profs from the top tier schools and economists from the everywhere. Search of talent not ideology and lets try and get it done.

this is a red herring----Volker is attempting throw the blame for the economic mess AWAY from him and his good-old-boys who Designed the insane policies of the last dozen years and onto the ruse of an " under-staffed" Treasury Dept. Nice try, but its not gonna fly.

No he isn't doing this at all. Even Obama aides and Geithner have said that this is an issue for an array of reasons. There is very little staff there to help do anything...and they need to figure out a way to get temporary help, even if it takes a while to get other staff hired.

"Now various things have contributed to this, I guess, inlcuding vetting procedures, but it really is an unfortunate situation."

Yeah, since vetting is required ,they can't find an elite economist or financier who has paid his taxes , doesn't have Swiss accounts or wouldn't rather get a chance at the billion dollar free handouts from the government , instead of having to go to work every day.

The finance sector -deal with them at your own peril. After they've finished us off ,I guess they'll begin to turn on each other.

Look, here's the bottom line: Tim has to step up to the plate, and do the job, otherwise step aside, if the job is too much.

You want to know what REALLY a SHAME?

What's really a shame is the notion that Mr. Geithner is intimating that he can't find any decent help because EVERYONE IN WASHINGTON IS LINKED TO A LOBBYIST.

This is not to infer that all lobbyists are bad.
Many advocate for good, honorable needs for the public.
But this balogna of members of congress using lobbyists to stack laws, while accepting "GIFTS" that - in some instances, then appear to NOT BE CLAIMED ON THEIR INCOME TAXES, is a MAJOR SCAM and NEEDS TO STOP.

SORRY, but Geithner needs to aggressively find reputable staff members NOT associated with special interests for the sake of some semblance of integrity being established. Surely, between all these great minds, they can come up with some names of reputable people.

Shameful or deliberate? Geithner is running the show without interference. He is acting in the interests of the Fed and the private bankers who own it.

End the Fed.

Put the FED under control of the Treasury.

The constitution requires it.

it's the Kucinich plan.

Bet they will have plenty of staffing then.

We won't have to bailout the banks.

We won't pay interest on government spending.

again all roads lead to the treasury secretary. no one takes on a job of that import without thinking hard about their team. good leaders are never short of loyal staff who will work of them. it can't be that ALL the candidates cheated on the taxes. therefore this problem has to rest in a larger part with Geithner

totally agree, we see clearly that Republicans are keeping on staffers who should be let go because the GOP is no longer in the majority. The Democrats can't hire staff because they are in the majority because the GOP is playing politics and using the staffs to outsource the RNC, imagine that!! It is time that Americans take to the streets to hold the GOP accountable. DOWN W/ BUSH, DOWN, WITH THE GOP!

Hire Americans who need jobs to feed their families. The Treasury and all these Departments should be filling up with qualified, energetic and enthusiastic Americans to begin working! Get Americorps going so young Americans can get to work in the communities, schools and colleges. What is holding these guys back?

Understaffed? Gee, I thought our government was bloated and needed "across the board" cuts. (sarcasm intended)

"But why are Obama's two early backers, Soros and Volcker, admitting to the size of the crisis? The better to erect a totalitarian state, and to justify the push to rip the rest of us off in even more frenzied fashion?" Lew Rockwell

Let's face it, it is not just the Treasury. They've hollowed out everything in hope to kill the government's capacity to perform its natural duty. Remember, the market was supposed to solve everything! Our government became either an impediment to transfer of wealth, in which case it had to be diminished, or an effective conduit for this process which had to be enhanced. The end result of this process is a big government for 1% of the population and a small government for the rest of us.

I completely agree with your analysis, I think Bush and company did everything they
could, to make sure that government was ineffective.

also, it was bush's intent to outsource as much of the federal government's responsibilities to outside agencies/companies...i.e. blackwater, haliburton...in other words privatize the federal govt.
