AFP:

JAKARTA (AFP) -- Indonesian villagers have trapped and killed a fourth endangered Sumatran tiger amid a spate of tiger attacks blamed on illegal logging, according to environmental group WWF.

Four tigers and six people have been killed on Sumatra island this month, it said.

"We learnt on February 24 that another Sumatran tiger had been trapped and killed by villagers after it attacked two farmers on Sunday," WWF spokeswoman Syamsidar told AFP.

2 World Wars in the 20th Century, and not a day went by on Earth when there wasn't a full scale conflict being fought. Total death toll 150 million.

World population 1900 ---- 1.1 Billion

World Population 2000 ---- 6.8 Billion

War won't make things any better for us or the Natural World, it destroys indiscriminately. We need less births.

OrangePetal, WWF does offer trips to the rainforest, and many ways to get involved to protect these beautiful gentle giants. If you are member, you receive newsletters to go on geographic photography visits. While is a gallant effort and well worth what you pay, it is, and they would agree, one of the last things that is needed, a more humane way of bringing money to this region is needed, without the foot traffic. Elephants are victims in many regions throughout Asia, India, Africa. Their deaths are usually by the hand of those in the ivory trade, poaching or worse yet those taking more land, especially those that clear land in protected elephant corridor territory. And, many on that land use unconventional methods to electrocute elephants on THAT protected land. Every year 20,000 elephants can illegally be slaughtered just in Africa and Asia to meet demands for ivory or land. And many times governments struggle to stop attacks on these beautiful, historical creatures. More needs to be done and with less invasion, or else price tags are what these people see and go after...it is very sad.

thinking about more of this just saddens me since they hunt tiger for its bone and bone marrow throughout Asia. More education and sanctuary protection and limitation is needed. They venture into our boundries for food, we venture into theirs to kill.

These backward people are destroying both their environment and wildlife, yet they will blame the west as the bad guys.

Backward ? They try to feed their families by working hard and producing agricultural products that are in high demand. They also try to protect their communities from being attacked and killed by these tigers. WWF is IMO using a bad strategy. Local people will just resent the bad logic and insensitivity to their rights. Put a $5000 price tag on the handing over of a live tiger. Purchase land as a sanctuary and fence it off so it will not endanger the locals. Tigers who can still survive in the natural forests --- great. I think unless alternative ways for income are found people will and should use their resources. Perhaps WWF could finance and promote efforts to develop ecco tourism trips to the jungle. The tourists are already there. Re-forestation efforts with a fast growing wood for their artifacts may also help. I'm not sure if they are still using the natural wood, but I would not be surprised if they do. Confrontation in my opinion is not the best way, facilitating alternative beneficial options could be more effective and may actually help to be able to revert the trend, which is what we would all obviously prefer to see.

Thank you Orangepetal.

The key to the survival of endangered species is to create ways for local people to benefit from their existence. For example, the countries in Africa that have thriving elephant and rhinoceros populations are the ones that allow the local people to reap the monetary benefits of eco-tourism while controlling the size of the herds with managed hunting. And putting a $5,000.00 bounty on a live-trapped tiger who attacked people so the tiger can be relocated is an excellent idea.

That said, I don't think creating fenced sanctuaries is wise unless there are policies that allow for controlling the size of animal populations in these sanctuaries.

ignorant, fearful, greedy, arrogant fools.

if it never occurred to them to GO SOMEWHERE ELSE where they wouldn't be eaten because they are starving out the natives, then to h3ll with them.

i'm glad at least the effort is being made to arrest them. the indonesian minister is absolutely right.

You are joking. You are the arrogant and greedy one. These people could live in a leaf home, they could have toddlers running around . They grow palm oil to sell to multinationals who make cream to keep your skin silky soft. Arrogance, huh, they never told you what to do. Liberals and their theoretical morality, getting involved in things they don't even understand. Where are your wild animals, huh? Gone away a long time ago. And you know what, tigers sure look beter in a motivational picture on your wall than they do hungry trying to feed off of you in the middle of the night.
