Today, a federal grand jury formally charged Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri -- the only "enemy combatant" held inside the United States -- "with two counts of providing material support to al Qaeda." This afternoon, Fox News host Shepard Smith briefly veered off the Fox reservation and expressed outrage that al-Marri has been imprisoned for five years without any charges being filed against him:

I've grown to appreciate and admire Shep Smith. He no doubt gets a decent paycheck at Fox news, but he could really come into his own if he were put on a real news network. He's called out both Hannity and O'reilly to their faces. Hope some smart news executive lures him away from Murdoch's propaganda channel.

The real question is why the rightous indignation now? After all we have held many prisoners in GITMO without any selmblence of them having any civil rights, for more year than 5 years. Back in October, Shep showed signs of being a real reporter (and human being) when he was talking to Joe the Plumber who was in Columbus, Ohio, stumping for McSame. A McSame supporter had claimed a vote for Obama was a vote for the de.ath of Is.rael...­...and asked about the claim, Joe backed it up, saying he agreed with it.....She­p made a disclaimer and said something like "It's getting frightening out there." He was obviously distressed by the rhetoric and rightly so. And he is right on this issue.....­even if it has been a long time coming around....­..I can guarentee you won't ever hill Hannity or Bill-O say this....no matter how many years pass.
