I Like ItI Don’t Like It

"The Daily Show" 's John Oliver reported on the White House press corps last night. He describes the briefing room as "what Donald Trump would have designed if he'd decided to keep journalists as pets" and refers to NBC News' Chuck Todd as "the guy who manages Flight of the Conchords." More pointedly, Oliver gets CBS' Chip Reid to brag about meaningless soundbites and asks spokesman Robert Gibbs, "Which of the questions that your staff insisted be pre-approved would you like to answer?"

But Helen Thomas gets the last word: "I don't know where you came from, but wherever it is you should go home."

I love how he frames his questions "So, how can you reduce a day's worth of work down to meaningless soundbites?" There was a lot of cleverness in that piece.

I would like to see Helen Thomas on Jon Steward show. I think she could be educational and funny at the same time.

What a classic question: "Which of my pre-approved questions would you like me to ask?" That question tells much about modern journalism.

For me, the best part of the bit was the way Robert Gibbs handled John Oliver. If John tried the "pre-approved questions" line on any of Bush's press people, they either would have given him a blank stare or insisted they don't pre-approve questions. Gibbs was happy to play the straight man for Oliver, perfectly understanding how it was going to be viewed on the show. Gibbs is clearly the most savvy press secretary we have seen in a long while. Based on his "Morning Joe" and other tv appearances, the press corps clearly enjoys him, and he enjoys dealing with them. I don't know how long he will last, but we should look upon this age as a golden one in press-WH relations

He's a TV star. Brad Pitt could do a better job.

I like John liver very much. But I must admit that the funniest bit I ever saw him do was when he was running across a field and fell and broke his nose (he really did break his nose). I almost peed myself.
I was mindful of the broken nose bit watching this piece last night.

Now that the culture of television has reduced our attention span to gnats what's the last thing they will do to us? Swat us?
