Unemployment Rate : 8.1% in February

The national unemployment rate rose to 8.1 percent in February, the highest rate in a quarter century, as the economy shed 651,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday.

"The jump in unemployment should be seen more as evidence that prior figures may have understated the rate of deterioration than as something to be corrected in coming months." -- Jan Hatzius, Goldman Sachs.
