WOODBINE, Ga. — Authorities say they arrested an escaped jail inmate trying to sneak back into the lockup with cigarettes allegedly stolen from a nearby store.

Sheriff Tommy Gregory said Saturday that 25-year-old Harry Jackson had opened a door to the exercise yard and climbed the outer fence.

Deputies found a jail door unlocked early Saturday and were looking for the inmate. They spotted Jackson trying to come back in and found 14 packs of cigarettes they believe were stolen from a convenience store about a block away.

Jackson faces new charges of breaking out of jail and burglary. He was already in jail in Camden County in far southeast Georgia for charges including possession of a controlled substance and violating probation.

LOL!

I shouldn't find this funny but it is. I guess this guy said life on the inside isn't too bad:

Lets see:

Free Room
Free Meals
Free Healthcare
Free College if they want it
Free Gym
Free Lawyer
The Big ONE: NO WORK

Now tell me, why are we out here?

really? He should probably get extra work detail but to give him more years for breaking out when he meant to come back is insane. I wonder if they let him keep the smokes?

You know it's bad when the criminals would rather go back to prison than escape into a bad economy.

I've got it ! : while scoring the cigs ,the inmate chanced to glimpse a newspaper and quickly figured out that three hots and a cot were preferable to being free in a bad economy.

You know, you say that with tongue in cheek, but there's a lot of sense in what you said.
Things get bad and you're hungry, just kick a trash can over in front of the law and get a free night and three squares on th taxpayers dime.

I remember a story like this a few years back. It turned out that one of the inmate gan.gss" threatened to off the guy if he didn't break out and go fetch them McDonald's.

I dunno, it's an odd story no matter how you slice it, but it could be any number of things as to why he did this. Maybe he was hoping to make it back before anyone realized he was missing.

What's so hard to understand? He didn't "escape"; he just thought he could sneak away long enough to stock up on cigarettes.

Look, we know he's not exactly a genius. Give the poor doof a break.

He came back because he had nowhere else to go. In this economy prison is his best way to get a square meal, even if it does consist of McNuggets and wonder bread.

If I were him I would have gotten a gun. It's hard(er) to escape jail with a carton of ciggies.

This guy clearly accepts his fate as a prisoner. He was just coming home after a little 'shopping'.

If this doesn't convince people of the addictive power of nicotine, then nothing will.
