What's Your Reaction?

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Saturday challenged his country to see its hard times as a chance to "discover great opportunity in the midst of great crisis."

"That is what we can do and must do today. And I am absolutely confident that is what we will do," Obama said in his weekly radio and video address, taped a day earlier at the White House.

WATCH:

The work week ended on more down news, with the report of 651,000 more American jobs slashed and an unemployment rate climbing to 8.1 percent. That is the highest rate of people out of work in more than 25 years, as the recession continued to put enormous pressures on families and industries.

Obama recapped the work of the latest hectic week in his young presidency. His goal was to reassure the country that he and his team are taking specific steps to create jobs in the short term and begin to address huge issues such as health care.

His rundown of the past week: the launch of a more detailed plan to help struggling homeowners avoid foreclosure; a new credit plan to spur lending for people and businesses; an overhaul of the way the government hands out private contracts to reduce waste; and a summit on how to overhaul health care.

On the last point, Obama has set a goal of signing a bill this year that would fix the U.S. health care system, which is the costliest in the world and leaves an estimated 48 million people uninsured, plus many others lacking adequate coverage.

"Our ideas and opinions about how to achieve this reform will vary, but our goal must be the same: quality, affordable health care for every American that no longer overwhelms the budgets of families, businesses and our government," Obama said.

Obama says he is not wedded to a plan on how to fix the problem. But one proposal he has endorsed, giving Americans the option of buying medical coverage through a government plan, is drawing opposition from Republicans.

Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., emphasized that point in the Republican weekly radio address.

"I'm concerned that if the government steps in it will eventually push out the private health care plans millions of Americans enjoy today," Blunt said. "This could cause your employer to simply stop offering coverage, hoping the government will pick up the slack."

As the White House takes on so many huge issues at once, Obama is encouraging people to take a longer view, and not get caught up in the fits and starts. The president said in his address that the nation will continue to face difficult days in the months ahead. Still, he ended with hope.

"Yes, this is a moment of challenge for our country," Obama said. "But we've experienced great trials before. And with every test, each generation has found the capacity to not only endure, but to prosper _ to discover great opportunity in the midst of great crisis."

"health Care Plans" might get pushed out by

non-profit single payer health Insurance.

Duh.

The insurance companies are careful to call their insurance (discount plans really)

"Heath care plans", as if they actually delivered health care.

The insurance company job is to sell you insurance, then keep you from using it.

"A few months ago Liberals were saying vigorous debate on important issues was essential for a thriving democracy. Now they want to silence anyone who disagrees. It didn't take long for The Left to abandon their princples."

How is hope President Obama fails a proper debate?

America, our corporate media, congress, senate, pundits, others and especially the GOP are not accustomed to an informed voter, go to OpenSecrets.org to find out how we got to where are today with lobbyists paying off our politicians. Specifically, go to Tracking the Payback http://www.opensecrets.org/payback//) to see just how much our congress and senate actually care about the American people. I have listed example below but once you go to OpenSecrets.org, you can find: What legislation has been proposed, what special interests want, what industry stands to benefit the most and which committees oversee the issue and who's giving to them while ripping off the American people:

Obama useing this econmic crisis as an "opportunity," as him and Rahm Emanuel have both said, is analogous to George Bush useing his crisis (9-11) as an "opportunity" to go to war with Iraq. And yet, all you blind liberals come up with some dumb rational for it. It is indefensable. Obama is useing this to initiate liberal policies. Talk about bad timeing. How about you, Mr. President, do something, anything, to fix the crux of the problem: banking. Maybe tripleing the deficite can wait.

exactly, and somehow people thinks its just fine to be doing. When people are this blind and partisan, I dont know what to think of America - well... liberal America. I guess it just reaffirms thier ineptness to think and be pragmatic (I'm not saying Republicans think or are pragmatic). I mean, I am 17 and i get it. (not to self incriminate myself - as i am protected from doing in the 5th Amendment), but usually the older people get the wiser they get. This is just not the case with most of these liberals.

kj09013 and husseinthemunki, at least the American people will have something to show for it, healthcare, jobs, green energy, education, new road, bridges, light rail, etc. The only thing George Bush and the GOP has left us is a financial meltdown and crisis because George Bush and the GOP gave the American's tax dollars to big corporation and the wealthy.

I wonder why our corporate media never asks this question: When is all the money these people made.

Yes, Obama IS using this crisis to initiate liberal policies.

Why shouldn't he? Liberal policies have helped our country out of crises before. The sort of policies that the Republicans believe in have proven to be disastrous. Initiating liberal policies only seems logical at this point.

I think this article highlights Obama desire and aim for change, which I think is great, and I think people expected a lot from him right away, which leads people to being disappointed that nothing has changed thus far and that the economy is still declining. I think people do not realize that change can happen at the snap of his fingers, so although change has not happened just yet, I think that people need to have some patience. Nothing will fix itself, change will eventually come around, but the matter is we do not necessarily know if the change will be for the better or the worse, only time will tell, and we can only hope for the best.

Liberals:

You all need to wake up and smell the coffee. You've been duped, and we - all of us - are getting taken like the fools Obama thinks we are.

How many times will Obama or a member of his team say "Crisis is a great opportunity" before you understand what is happening? I know you all want health care and global warming research, and you think taxing the rich to redistribute wealth is a good thing. Here's the thing you don't understand - right now what we need most in this country is two things.

First - people need jobs. It doesn't matter how much health care Obama provides, if government doesn't have tax revenues to pay doctors. Obama has planned so much spending, he can't tax the rich enough to pay for it all, and if we're not working...

Second, and directly related to the first - we need businesses (not big corporations, but small businesses) to have money available. The only way this can happen is for the government to get cash into the banking system to the point that banks are confident enough to make loans. Once banks can loan to businesses, those businesses can borrow enough to create ways to create jobs.

Once we are all working again and things stabilize, then Obama can save us from global warming and get us all to the doctor. Until then, he needs to help us all make sure we have a job to go to on

If (like you say) we've been duped, then what is Obama's motivation for duping us?

Why would he want to take us for the fools he thinks we are? What is his objective? Do you suppose that he intends to destroy this country? For what purpose, according to you?

You seem to begin thinking about all this by taking the supposition that Obama means ill for our country as a given fact. Where does that initial supposition come from?

Don't be naive McCue, The President promised an omnibus cure for cure for everything and anything.

Why ? To be the President. The Democrats build him up only to bring us down. Same o Same o - Almighty Power.

There are over 500 species of SERPENTS - Republicans, Democrats. They are all over Washington and Wall Street.

Being a street organizer, a junior senator, and no. 1 book seller of hope are very admirable. Indeed he offered glowing oratories, an ambrosia to a nation that is so desperate for change. It was so easy for us to chugalug the ambrosia, sugary empty promises.

No one can convince me that one party alone caused this monumental meltdown. The Republicans looted the National Treasury, and the Democrats slept all the way. Easier for the Democrats to look the other way, worst, they had no balls to be the loyal oppositions, instead, the acquiesced to the looting.

I don't doubt the President is a good man, but regrettfully he lack experiences to face this calamity. Sure he was a street organizer, and an oratorical genius. Those alone will not save the day.

The President wants us to invest. 4.3 million job lost, industries closing, homeowners defaults is a sign of President's grasp of the economy. THE DOW LOST OVER 50%. How can we even begin to invest ? SERIOUSLY LACKING GRASP OF REALITY.

Yup, the ambrosia he served dupped us all.

From the Salt Lake Tribune: Utah lawmakers and Gov. Social Security, child labor laws, Medicare, unemployment compensation, workmen's compensation, unions, minimum wage law---GOP conservatives vigorously fought against all of them. And of course we know they are adamantly against universal healthcare, and yet, never offer any kind of alternative healthcare proposal that interests the people. How can being against all of those things make America a better, more decent country? What is their rationale?

Herbert Hoover believed in laissez-faire capitalism, and rugged individualism to such a point that he ignored voices within his own cabinet, to do more to help Americans who were at their breaking point, and railed against FDR's policies which ameliorated the misery, and gave back work and dignity to Americans during the Great Depression. For this, FDR was hated by conservatives, and the wealthy, and called a "socialist dictator". Why didn't the people vote for GOP ideas in those four elections FDR won? The GOP doesn't have an answer for that.

Now the GOP rich don't want to pay higher taxes for President Obama's healthcare, energy, and education. I just don't get the GOP rationale, and how their conservative philosophy is supoosed to make America a better country. Can any of you GOPers on this site calmly explain that to me without the name calling and snark?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:45 PM on 03/07/2009

Their rationale is that even a 4.5% increase on their 35% tax rate is simply intolerable. Their goal is to pay zero taxes. That's why so many of the wealthiest hid billions jn offshore Swiss and Cayman Island accounts.

I'm a fiscal Conservative and I don't have a problem with the tax increase. It's an !diotic thing to do during a recession, but I don't have a problem with it. What I do have a problem with is a $787Bill stimulus bill that has questionable long term value and absolutely no value in the short term to solve the current confidence in the credit and publicly traded markets.

And so why did Tom Daschle and Tim Geithner cheat on their taxes?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:12 PM on 03/07/2009

u dont get it. if u pay 39% tax you probably live in a high tax state. so u pay an additional 12% state and local tax. you pay several % in real estate tax and 8-9% in sales tax, about 15% in social security taxes, and about 5-6% in medicare taxes. pretty soon you get about 30 cents of every dollar you earn and most aren't willing to give 70% of what they earn to the governments. Their leisure time is worth much more to them than the incremental dollar earned. simple arithmetic.

"Social Security, Medicare, workmen's compensation, unions, minimum wage law" have created a situation where people now vote for government for "benefits", which is becoming unsustainable. The unfunded liabilites of Social Security and Medicare alone have exceeded $25 trillion dollars. Once we add "universal healthcare", it won't be long before we either raise income taxes on EVERYONE to 50% or more or bankrupt the country. Medicare's website showed $13 billion dollars wasted to fraud and abuse.

BTW, every industrialized country during the late 1920s early 30s had a depression. FDR's policies made ours "Great". We are still paying for the mess he made because of the "entitlement" mentality. Right now Obama is doing the same thing Hoover did after the stock market crashed, raising taxes. Also, because of FDR, an amendment has been added to the Constitution to prohibit future presidents from being president more than 2 terms or 10 years.

As it is right now, the top 3% of wage earners pay almost 60% of ALL federal income taxes. Poor people pay none (even European socialist countries tax their poor). Obama's policies will not help the poor, just punish the wealthy. There's an old adage the left needs to learn, "You can't make the poor rich by making the rich poor."

You don't make a country better by taking one person's hard earned money and giving it to someone else.

most of the federal tax and the nyc tax is paid by a relatively few households. u squeeze them enough and they will give u the finger. i have decided i will lay off staff and reduce income and take more leisure time so that i don't pay HRH one nickel more and i will have more leisure time. i am not contributing any more money for handouts. it is time to teach people to fish, not fish for them. the vast left wing conspiracy hasn't figured that out. they have had only 220 years. they are slow.

Keep that in mind when you're 65. I expect you to be a man of principle, and refuse to join the program for the good of the country, and our fiscal discipline.
