MASSILON, Ohio — Evidence of the slumping economy is stacking up at an Ohio school which has nearly 700 applications for one open janitorial job.

Officials at Perry Local Schools near Canton in northeast Ohio say they've extended the deadline until Monday to accommodate the overwhelming response to the week-old posting.

The full-time position at Edison Junior High School pays $15 to $16 an hour plus benefits.

Superintendent John Richard says many applicants are laid-off workers with heart-wrenching stories about the tough economic times.

Forty-nine-year-old Donna Croston says she applied after losing jobs at two nearby factories that closed.

Croston says her chances of being hired amid the hundreds of applicants are slim, but she's hoping to get lucky.

I wonder how the school sorted through the large volume of resumes to find the candidate for the job.

With fewer companies hiring and more applicants for each job, it can be hard for companies with limited resources to find the needle in the haystack. An outplacement customer recently indicated that they were staying on top of the large volume of resumes by streamlining the process with the assistance of an online database.

I wrote a recent post highlighting how an online database can streamline the hiring process:

Things are bad. I got the Sunday paper yesterday and looked at the job classified section and was shocked to see it was less than three sheets long. I remember last year when I was unemployed, that section was dozens of sheets long!

Some people are followers and others are leaders. I guess we have a lot more followers than leaders else we would have more people trying to create jobs than look for one. Then on the other hand it takes money to start a job which alot of people don't have. Fred Smilek is the acting president of the Society to Save Endangered Species. It was founded two years ago by Fred Smilek along with his two best friends Charles and Jonathan. http://www.fredjsmilek.com

Maybe the problem with this country is that everyone is looking for a job and no one is creating any job opportunities.
If you have 1,000 people looking for a job and only 1 person creating a job, there is an imbalance.
Tell me why 500 people don't go out and create a job for themselves.

Yeah you're right...
Or even better why doesn't 1 person just go out and create 500 jobs!

"Peter007" Are you serious?

Yeah we're a nation of whiners, and this is a "mental recession".

Good luck trying to create new jobs when all the factories that used to be here are now in CHINA-thanks to Clinton and the republicans.

There are plenty of factories here. Many are empty. Many are closing. Its not a lack of factories that is the problem.

15 to 16 bucks an hour for a janitorial job isn't bad at all, if I was in Massilon, Ohio I'd probably apply as well.

I have a better idea. Give Bernie Madoff the job and take his fortune and divy it up between all those applicants.
It's time the rich start paying their fair share in this economic crisis. They just don't give a crap, so stick their noses in it.
Oh, and the benefits? Are they like the one in Albert Brooks film, a ride to and from work?

More like, Ohio is paying the price for letting Ken Blackwell and Rove's Minions steal the election in 2004.

I bet if we started outsourcing the CEO's, accountants and politicians jobs to other countries we'd see a rapid movement by them to get manufacturing and other outsourced jobs back to this country.

Accountants are already being outsourced. The CEO's will be outsourced when foreign companies take over American Companies. Politicians?
Now thats an interesting idea.

Simple solution: Sponge for a day!

Usually that's every liberals life, but in this scenario they'd take turns in the drum.

Every 1.9 years we get to the top of the order. (Better limit the line now before this solution becomes ridiculous.)

The funny thing is ... if you look at a map of the US and see how federal tax dollars are distributed you will find that the Blue States are generally supporting the Red States ... so it's not the Liberal areas of the country who aren't pulling their economic weight.

One of the industries hiring is the Military. This is why the recession was created anyway by the republicans for be to join the military to fight the made up war in iraq. They even give waivers to join..

They're bringing back the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. And you really can't blame the republicans for this - both the dems & reps are "one in the same". They just operate in different fashions but always with the same end results in mind. Look closely.

This is just the tip-of-the-iceberg of what's to come. Hope and change? That is all well and good, but words of promise do not provide you with your jobs, your homes from being foreclosed, etc. From the outside looking in, all I see is actions of bailouts going to those who are only using it to benefit themselves, and with no accountability by the way. There really has been no actions taken to directly help the people per se but you are being stuck with the massive debt to repay all of this. Hope and change?
