MARYVILLE, Ill. — The man charged with gunning down a pastor mid-sermon and then stabbing two churchgoers had marked the day as "death day" in a planner found in his home and carried enough ammunition to kill 30 people, a prosecutor said Monday.

Madison County State's Attorney William Mudge said he had no details on the reference in alleged gunman Terry J. Sedlacek's day planner, only that it singled out Sunday as "death day."

"The only thing I can really comment on is he came armed with many rounds of ammunition and a knife, and I think we can surmise that more bloodshed may have occurred," Mudge said.

Sedlacek, 27, of Troy, was charged Monday with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the attack at First Baptist Church that killed the Rev. Fred Winters and left Sedlacek and two congregants who tackled him with stab wounds.

Neither Mudge nor Illinois State Police would comment on a possible motive or on Sedlacek's mental state when he allegedly strode into the church shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, exchanged words with Winters and began firing a handgun.

"We're still not sure what the reasoning was," said state police Lt. Scott Compton, adding that investigators had not yet interviewed Sedlacek.

Sedlacek has suffered bouts of erratic behavior his family has attributed to Lyme disease.

Verna Giley, 59, said Monday she worked with Sedlacek at a restaurant in nearby Alhambra that was owned by his mother and stepfather, Robert and Ruth Abernathy, before it was sold at auction last fall.

Giley said Sedlacek had been a quiet teen. But after his Lyme disease diagnosis and a hospitalization when Giley said he almost died, he began making odd noises and his body would sometimes jerk. She said he never was threatening.

"They've tried all different kinds of treatments, but it seems nothing helped," Giley said of the Abernathys.

Sedlacek's attorney, Ron Slemer, told the Belleville News-Democrat on Monday that his client has deteriorated both mentally and physically since contracting Lyme disease.

But Dr. Eugene Shapiro, a Lyme disease expert at Yale University, said it would be unlikely that tickborne ailment would make someone so violent.

"Lyme disease doesn't cause people to shoot people," Shapiro said.

A phone call to a number listed for Robert and Ruth Abernathy in Troy rang unanswered Monday. One of Sedlacek's aunts, Joann Self of Glen Carbon, said the family had no comment.

Slemer said his client's family is "very sorry for the pastor's congregation.

Mudge said Sedlacek had 10 rounds of ammunition in a handgun and was carrying two more 10-round magazines in his pocket on Sunday. The .45-caliber Glock jammed after four shots were fired at Winters, prosecutors said, but not before one bullet fatally struck him in the heart after he deflected the first with his Bible.

Sedlacek was ordered held without bond even as he remained hospitalized Monday in serious condition. Authorities said he stabbed himself in the throat while being wrestled to the ground by the two congregants.

One of them, 39-year-old Terry Bullard, also remained in serious condition Monday. The other, Keith Melton, was treated and released.

Mudge said it appeared Sedlacek may have arrived at the church, about four miles from his home, as early as 5:30 a.m. Sunday, partly because his Jeep was in a parking space close to a door in the crowded parking lot.

"We think he intended to do this," he said.

But neither Mudge nor state police could say Monday whether Sedlacek knew Winters, a married father of two who had led the church for nearly 22 years.

"We actually pray for him," First Baptist Associate Pastor Mark Jones said of Sedlacek. Jones said one of the church's pastors visited with Sedlacek's family Monday.

"He apparently has a second chance," Jones said. "I believe that he's alive and that maybe he too needs to go back to the Bible and read that book and ask the question `is this really God's word and do I need to reconsider some things?'"

None of the 150 worshippers attending the Sunday service seemed to recognize Sedlacek, and investigators did not know details of Winters' conversation with him but planned to review an audio recording of the service. Compton said he didn't know if investigators had reviewed the audio Monday.

Several well-wishers stopped Monday at the church, where emotions remained raw. Gwen Lawson, 23, fought an icy wind as she pushed her 1-year-old son in his stroller after visiting the church, where her husband ministers to college-age students.

"I really haven't had time to process it all," she said, her voice choking and her eyes welling. "I don't want to go through the details; it's just a very tragic event.

Winters deflected the first of the gunman's four rounds with a Bible, sending a confetti-like spray of paper into the air in a horrifying scene worshippers initially thought was a skit, police said.

He had stood on an elevated platform to deliver his sermon about finding happiness in the workplace, and witnesses said he managed to run halfway down the sanctuary's side aisle before collapsing.

Autopsy results showed Winters was hit with one bullet that went straight through his heart, Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn said Monday. Nonn would not comment on the distance between the gunman and the pastor.

What I find distressing is the fact that almost all of these church shootings are done by zionists. And everytime these psycho's mysteriously get top lawyers and jewish judges and end up getting sentenced to minimum security country club mental facilities. This killer was a Polish jew, a Jonathan Sedlacek, 27,who executed the pastor as he was giving a sermon. Amazingly, there is an alibi within ten minutes of his horrible crime and for whatever reason, they would not release his name. The family spokesman said he was bit by a tick when he was a counselor at a camp in the Catskills, and has lyme disease and this is why he did it. Doesn't anyone find this suspicious that they would have this excuse all laid out and ready within ten minutes and without having spoken to Sedlacek?

There has been bad blood between the Jewish people and Baptists for years. In the past 5 years, there have been dozens of church shootings and arsons, coincidentally all carried out by gunmen of jewish descent who all claim mental illness and who all end up with either probation or a light sentence. Remember the string of arson fires on Baptist churches two years ago? 9 fires that destroyed all the churches done by zionists who ended up with 6 month sentences at minimum security facilities.

Look it up at one of the few sites that dares to stand up to the internet thought police... judicial-inc.org.

71% of gunshot victims had previous arrest records.

64% had been convicted of a crime.

63% of victims have criminal histories and 73% of the time they know their assailant (twice as often as victims without criminal histories).

60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed.

40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed.

Felons report that they avoid entering houses where people are at home because they fear being shot.

59% of the burglaries in Britain, which has tough gun control laws, are "hot burglaries" which are burglaries committed while the home is occupied by the owner/renter. By contrast, the U.S., with more lenient gun control laws, has a "hot burglary" rate of only 13%.

Most gun violence is between criminals. This should be the public policy focus.

Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year, or 6,849 every day.65 Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal"s) is shed.

Perhaps Christian Fundamentalist Eric Prince should deploy his Blackwater mercenaries into the churches across America to protect the "Holy People" since their deity obviously can't or won't.

"Lyme disease doesn't cause people to shoot people," Shapiro said.
Yeah, but undiagnosed encephalopathy could. Clearly this guy is sick sick individual. Clinically sick. I don't know how much bible reading is going to resolve that. Meds, maybe.
I'm so glad that Obama signed the science policy memorandum yesterday. It's juts going to take a while to trickle down...

I have personally known, in the course of my work, two people who have had the Lyme's organism get into their CNS, including brains. It's rare, but it happens, and it causes a sort of dementia. While it wouldn't "cause" someone to shoot anyone, it can diminish reasoning capacity.

However, the people I knew with this condition would not have been physically able to shoot anyone, though, since the disease had seriously damaged the motor control area of their brains. The shooter likely does not have the serious CNS infection since he apparently doesn't have any motor control issues.

It could be that his family attributes a mental disorder to the Lyme's when in fact it arose from other causes. However, I admit I don't know everything about Lyme's, and it is a strange, resident organism that appears to be sexually transmittable as well as insect-borne, so I could be wrong.

It's a little late for reconsideration unless Je$u$ is passing out get-out-of-jail-free cards today.

I believe the reference to a "second chance" related to forgiveness of sin. As long as we breathe and are alive, we can talk to God and be reconsiled through the price Jesus Christ paid on the cross. Even murder can be forgiven -- if the person is genuinely repentent, sorry for the crime and turned away from ever doing it again.

Yes, I'm well aware of the religious double-talk. Unfortunately for this guy, he already has a mental illness. He doesn't need to compound his problems with a new one.

Too bad the only thing that can't be forgiven by the christian god is not believing in him. Sorry to see that convicted murders and child rapists who find god get to heaven when truly decent people like Ghandi and the Dalai Llama go to hell.

Something about the way this article was written doesn't sit well with me. This is the part about using the bible to deflect the bullet and the pages flying out in confetti like strands afterward. This is a tragic event and the media decides to word this particular incident in this way. People died and the focus is more on the one who did the shooting than on the innocent victims who were involved. The person writing this article does not seem that much concerned with the people but more concerned with the man. He traces the history of this man in an attempt to see why he went down this particular road. Also, because this event took place in a church that adds to the story and the writer exploits this fact. It's a shame that incidents like this are perceived this way in the media.

It will be interesting to see if this guy got the guns legally, if the state of IL has a ban on mentally ill people from owning guns and how they are able to check this.

We make people take a written test, a vision test, drive and renew every few years for drivers licenses - shouldn't we at least do the same for owning a gun?

As a pro-gun person I am not opposed to stronger background checks for people applying for gun ownership. What I am opposed to is banning guns and raising prices on ammunition so high that no one can afford them. Why not require a gun safety course before the purchase of a gun instead of an outright ban?

Because gun safety isn't their goal...just anohter way to harrass gun owners.
They've already made it oo expensive for average people to shoot. So now you have a lot of people owning guns that can't afford to shoot them accurately...good strategy guys..
Many years ago in Florida a guy walked into a grocery store check out line with a bucket of gas, poored it on the floor lit a match and walked out....several died and were badly burned....What's your plan for keeping gas out of the hands of the 'wrong" people after you do away with guns??/.....OOOhhhhhhhhhhh,, that;s right, you're already working on that by making gas too expensive to obtain through your environmental laws...you dims really do have an answer for everything....

Bush had Lyme Disease during Katrina. Remember the weird behavior, and the hula jaw that plagued him during that time. The loooooong vacation. Something was going on with his health aside for the normal pinheadedness.

So are you prepared to ban guns AND KNIVES? I notice it's always about guns. Same thing happened after Oklahoma City -- where no guns were used at all.

The "Pro-Life" wing is actually anti-gun. Many of them are anti-death penalty. How about you?

The RNC just happens to include NRA members. It's a big tent. Few people in any political party agree with every platform of the party.

You sound like another person who probably hates religion and religious people so much that you'd like to insinuate that it was their fault that one of their own was killed by a crazy person. Well, don't you sound crazy, yourself.

If Mr. Sedlacek had an organic brain syndrome, caused by Lyme's lesions or any other disease process, it is possible he acted as a result of the delusions such conditions induce . The likelihood of any cure or amelioration of his condition were small, no matter what treatments he received. He certainly could have suffered from another mental disorder as well. It would certainly be a good idea to ask him. He would probably explain why he went to the church prepared to kill the preacher and anyone there, if he has any memory of the event. Things like this sometimes happen to sick people like Mr. Sedlacek. We should withhold judgement until more facts emerge.

I totally agree, jsagaetano. I read the long article waiting for them to reference the other recent church shooting (of course, I can't remember his name because the corporate media played down the story as an isolated incident, i.e. an anomaly) where the killer acted out against a so-called liberal church that tolerated gay rights, etc. This is but another piece. I read the story because I wondered if (a) they would reference that other recent church shooting and (b) if these killings would become a new phenomena like the school shootings in the 1990s, which, if you ask me, were directly attributable to pharmaceutical anti-depressants.

All you have to do is go without sleep for about three days, due to pain or tension or some kind of anxiety, and you start to dream while awake. Stuff makes 'sense' as it does in dreamwork, and the next thing you know you're a star in the tabloids, guilty as hell. Total insanity is not as far away as you think.

LOL. That was a joke, right, John? Don't get me wrong, I am the first to believe that man has tremendous capacity for evil, but the demons are not from hell. The so-called demons are simply man's selfishness, greed and corruption. Most of the time, these demons are part of our culture-i.e. they are taught/learned behavior. They can be untaught and unlearned, but not in America where hatred is our national policy.
