WASHINGTON -- A former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia resigned Tuesday from his new post as chairman of the National Intelligence Council following congressional criticism for comments about the Israeli government and alleged ties to foreign governments.

Charles Freeman's resignation came just hours after National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair said at a Senate hearing that he was standing behind his appointment of Freeman as chairman of the council, which analyzes national security issues. Freeman had not yet begun his work as chairman, and Blair said he accepted the resignation "with regret."

The council draws information and analysis from all U.S. intelligence agencies to produce national intelligence estimates. NIE's are the intelligence agencies' most comprehensive statements and are meant to be unvarnished and apolitical.

"I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office," Freeman wrote in a posting on the Web site for the magazine Foreign Policy.

"The effort to smear me and to destroy my credibility would instead continue. I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country," he wrote.

Freeman has aggressively criticized the Israeli government, the war in Iraq and the war on terror. In the last two weeks almost three dozen lawmakers, primarily Republicans, have questioned his ability to be objective in his analysis.

Freeman's financial, personal and business ties with the governments of China and Saudi Arabia have also been called into account. He was president of the Middle East Policy Council, which received some funding from the Saudi government, and he is on the international board of advisers to a Chinese-government owned oil company.

The congressional complaints resulted in an inspector general's investigation into Freeman's ties to the Saudi government.

On Monday, all seven Republican members of the Senate Intelligence Committee sent a letter to Blair expressing concerns about Freeman's suitability for the job. They joined more than a dozen members of the House who over the last two weeks have sent similar letters and requested the inspector general's investigation.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., warned Blair at a hearing Tuesday that the Freeman controversy would not be going away anytime soon. Blair stood firm, saying Freeman's strong opinions would be valuable on the council.

"I think I can do a better job if I am getting strong analytical viewpoints than if I am getting precooked pablum," Blair told the committee.

Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., one of Freeman's chief critics, said Tuesday that Freeman's resignation "preserved the impartiality of U.S. intelligence."

"We learned from eight years of the Bush administration that intelligence cannot be cherry-picked. It cannot be colored by opinion or even the appearance of conflict," Israel said.

Freeman, in his online statement, criticized as dishonorable and deceitful the tactics of the "Israel lobby" he said aims to control the policy process by vetoing the appointment of people "who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors."

* * * * *

EARLIER:

The office of Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair has released a statement announcing that Chas Freeman will not be National Intelligence Council Chairman:

Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair announced today that Ambassador Charles W. Freeman Jr. has requested that his selection to be Chairman of the National Intelligence Council not proceed. Director Blair accepted Ambassador Freeman's decision with regret.

Foreign Policy magazine's Laura Rozen has reprinted a long email that Freeman sent out explaining his decision to withdraw, which he blames mostly on the increasingly aggressive tactics of his critics. Here's a taste:

The libels on me and their easily traceable email trails show conclusively that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.

There is a special irony in having been accused of improper regard for the opinions of foreign governments and societies by a group so clearly intent on enforcing adherence to the policies of a foreign government - in this case, the government of Israel. I believe that the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider, any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling faction in Israeli politics has allowed that faction to adopt and sustain policies that ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel. It is not permitted for anyone in the United States to say so. This is not just a tragedy for Israelis and their neighbors in the Middle East; it is doing widening damage to the national security of the United States.

Earlier on Tuesday, Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) summoned the ambassador to a chat with her fellow Senators to assuage their concerns.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has taken credit for Freeman's withdrawal:

"Charles Freeman was the wrong guy for this position. His statements against Israel were way over the top and went beyond anything I have seen from any administration official," he said in a statement. "I repeatedly urged the White House to reject him, and I am glad they did the right thing."

Update: Freeman denies that Schumer had any role in his withdrawal in an email to Foreign Policy late Tuesday.

Neither our papers or Senators have an ounce of spine to stand up to the pro-Israel lobby in this country. Just wait for the right wing extremists to take over Israel and see where US stands in the world.

The Freeman affair is NOT over. It's being discussed everywhere in the alternative media & causing more of us to question again & again how Schumer, Lieberman & others in Congress have been promoting the policies of AIPAC. What may be a positive outcome is that there is a lot of focus now on AIPAC, esp. after Jimmy Carter's comments in 2006 when he was making the media rounds with his book, Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid. Despite ALL the criticism of his remarks about the pro-Israel lobbies & their undue influence on our hapless & foolish legislators by Israelis & their supporters, certainly the events of last summer when a shocked American audience saw almost every presidentlal candidate at the AIPAC conference bow to the Israel lobbyists. Obama, Hillary & McCain did not impress many Americans with their eagerness to toe the Israeli line. What is good is that all of this ended up on the blogs, You Tube, etc. What has been going on for more than 60 yrs. with Israeli tampering in our govt. concerns is now much more out in the open. We don't like what we are seeing about the effect of AIPAC & the other pro-Israel lobbies, esp. when they provide a cover for the brutal policies of occupation in Palestine..

Once Again, Rahm Emanuel, Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, & Israel Lobby _OWN_ the Obama administration.

THIS IS NOT "CHANGE" !!

Just as MICHAEL CHERTOFF - an open, avowed, & unrepentent AIPAC Likudnik - was the UnitedStates' SECRETARY OF HOMELAND SECURITY.

Not only did Chertoff head DHS, the organization that would (in national crisis) run America's modern CONCENTRATION CAMPS (as Japanese were intered in WWII), but Mr. Chefoff was also co-AUTHOR of the (despicable) un.P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act - the one that passed ONLY after TWO ANTHRAX LETTERS were mailed to THE TWO SENATORS most able to obstruct that act, then Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and then (and current) Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy.
(A law passed ONLY when the deadly and still unresolved ANTRHAX TERROR ATTACKS on Senator Leahy's and Daschle's office WIPED OUT their "obstruction" to the unPATRIOT Act).

Worst of all, AS IF _subordinating_ America's ENTIRE FOREIGN POLICY to the ancient hatreds of religious and tribal passions of the Mideast isn't bad enough, President Obama's ENTIRE _ECONOMIC_ TEAM is also defined by... THEIR GOLDMAN-SACHS "investment banking" roots!

While TreasurySecretary Geithner may not have _DIRECTLY_ worked for GoldmanSachs, his "job" at The USfedReserveBankNY was most certainly to keep his mentors - Robert Rubin & Lawrence Summers - happy. Which is to say - "GEITHNER'S JOB at the FedNY WAS TO KEEP GOLDMAN-SACHS & WALL St. HAPPY.

BOTH America's ECONOMIC, and FOREIGN POLICY, AND entire "NATIONAL SECURITY" apparatus are now ENTIRELY OWNED SUBSIDIARIES of the ISRAEL Lobby !

Looks like you missed the fact that they are also in full control of MSM. Find out why after spending billions of dollars Aljazeera could reach American Audience! No cable company would even dared to get close to Aljazeera. The only one who tried is still fighting in court.

It is despicable that we have to watch AJE on our computers & can't easily see it on our TVs without dealing with extra plugs, etc. We are using Jump TV to get it on our computer with a full size screen. We should not have to be so inconveniened to see Al Jazeera English on the big screens! However, there are two exceptions in that Link TV which is on Dish satellite network airs the AJE documentary I series, "Witness" every Monday night at 8 p.m. Link TV also airs every night at 7:30 p.m. Mosaic which combines news coverage (translated into English, if necessary) from many different sources from the Middle East & North Africa including Israel's IBA & AJE, both Arabic & English-speaking. Since Link TV is member supported with millions of viewers from all over the USA, it is not subjected to the pressures exerted on PBS by the usual lobbyists (which ruined it entirely of any credibility about the Middle East) & other American networks. ABC has sunk to a new low, using world news to cover whates & dolphins instead of what is happening in Gaza & other conflict zones.

Still waiting on that "change."

Freeman :" I have withdrawn my previous acceptance of his invitation to chair the National Intelligence Council."
Translation: ' "you can't fire me, I quit."

Lucky he didn't get into :" I just wanna spend more time with my family" routine.

Nobody has any interest in your amateurish attempts to categorize American political figures, ML. At least, not unless you can manage a bit more inadvertent humor than that.

Freeman stated:"I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office>"
Libelous? Most people simply quote HIS OWN statements tying him to Saudi money. One can chose to ignore it or take it into consideration.

Freeman in his own words.
"SUSRIS: Where do you focus your efforts?

Freeman: I periodically visit the region -- to the Kingdom and to other countries in the Gulf. Thanks to the generosity of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia we have managed to accumulate an endowment.... Frankly, Iโ€™m delighted that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has, after a long delay, begun to make serious public relations efforts,

Where is the libel?

Perhaps you could parse out what is bad about anything that Freeman may have said or done, in comparison to AIPACs lead people engaging in espionage against the US?

Rosen, who was part of the campaign to smear Freeman, was a leading figure at AIPAC, and he is currently charged with espionage against the United states. Schumer, Rosen Feinstein, et al, literally accept money on a regular basis from an organization that lobbys the US government for the benefit of another country, and which commits acts of espionage against the US government with the intent of falsely fomenting war.

Schumer literally takes money on a regular basis from an organization that spys on the US government. Now THAT'S bad.

We must be thankful that Israel has not directly attacked us or has taken some of our lands or imprisons some of relatives. It is true we give away billions of dollars of our hard earned money to Israel every year in the name of financial aides but we are not directly forced to do it. We just do it because we think we should!

Senators Schumer and Feinstein need to remember that they are each representatives of one of the United States not of a foreign state. Ambassador Freeman would have brought at last some intelligence to the National Intelligence Council.

Why are Democrats acting surprised?

Our entire congress voted full support for Israel's bloody massacre, Operation Cast Lead.

It's obvious who they work for .... and it's not America.

The Honorable Mr. Freeman is 100% correct.

It's a disgrace.

Aren't these the same governments you repeatedly accuse of being undemocratic and being guilty of profligate human rights violations? And what, now suddenly you consider them credible as fonts of moral justification?

According to the former National Director of the American Jewish Congress and of the Synagogue Council of America none of the claims in your post are true. How ironic that you speak of reality. http://www.lrb.co.uk/v31/n02/sieg01_.html

So the biggest violators of Human Rights in the Middle East backed Israel's genocide against Gaza's children and women? Hummmmm. That sums up all we need to know about Israel and the company it keeps.

By the way, when more than 420 children are killed out of 1300 civilians, no spin master can convince anyone that it was a war "against Hamas", neither does herding a group of more than 100 civilians into a building and then bombing it repeatedly, neither is using White Phosphorus on UN owned and operated schools.

And, no. The human shields excuse is just that, an unfounded, unsubstantiated claim that serves to justify the slaughter of the innocent at the hands of a well oiled military machine.

Freemanโ€™s vitriolic rant against the โ€œIsrael Lobbyโ€ merely confirms the inappropriateness of this vicious shill for any government intelligence position. He knows full well that his comments will simply add fuel to the anti-Semitic global campaign funded by his pals.

It is important that every time anyone who presents a more balanced approach to America's interests in the Middle East is labeled as anti-Semitic it is called out. That type of labeling is misleading and discourages the type of discussion we need on this topic.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:55 PM on 03/11/2009

I'm sure you're not implying that the Freeman episode is the first time this has happened.

The anti-semitic label (for non-Jewish critics) and the self-hating label (for Jewish critics) have been around for many decades and have muzzled any rational criticism of Israeli policy and of the U. S. foreign policy with respect to Israel in the American public sphere.

I believe the classic cost-benefits analysis was done by Meersheimer and Walt. (Oh, and they were forced to pay the price of their temerity, as well.)

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:28 PM on 03/12/2009

How much are you getting paid to post for the Israeli lobby? There is NOTHING ANTI-SEMITIC about expecting Israel to abide by the same international laws and respect for human rights as other civilized countries do! Whatever animosity that's being directed toward Israel now is due to ISRAEL'S own lawlessness and brutality, as well as its well-documented stranglehold (money/threats/intimidation) on our government's Middle East policies! I, for one, resent the fact that our leaders in Congress are FORCED to comply with a foreign government's wishes, or they face political and personal destruction by the "lobby"!

Cut out the tired, overused, and false accusations of being "anti-semitic"! It's using "victimhood" to intimidate those who disagree with your position! Disapproval of what Israel's government (and ours) is doing has nothing, NOTHING, to do with hating the people who live there!

People do not pay attention to the fact that most of our representatives are blackmailed by Israel. That has severely affected our foreign policies and most of our internal political affairs. It may not be evident on surface. But if one looks carefully would conclude that the main reason that this country has been mismanaged is due to its poor leadership. Our focus in electing representatives has been for who is good for Israel rather than who is good for America. Example-1: Look into what Ron Paul stands for and why not many people in America did NOT get to know him. Ron Paul was great for America but not much help to Israel or any other foreign countries. Watch this video and find out for yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fHfdSi-GDo&eurl
Example-2: Dennis Kucinich. But again he was disliked by Israelโ€™s lobbies and their associates. Many people shared his ideas but they never got to know him well.
Example-3: Ralph Nader. Good for America but not much friend of Israel. Apparently our interests and Israelโ€™s interests are not much shared anymore! Check the below link for more http://www.daily.pk/world/americas/9334-israeli-spokesman-says-we-control-stupid-americans.htmlns.html
Today I can add Mr. Freemanโ€™s name the list of truly patriotic Americans who this country lost the chance of fully benefiting from them.

Ralph "I'll throw the election to Bush because I'm a psycho" Nader?!? Ron "No one really know how far out my views are but likes my soundbytes" Paul?!? Dennis Kucinich?? Are you really serious? You think these people lost because of some all-powerful "israel lobby"? Talk about paranoid.

Funny to see how many virulently anti-israel people there are on so called "progressive" sites like this, just itching to jump on anything mentioning the word...."israel" (see, didn't a bunch of you feel adrenaline pumping as I wrote that??) get off your obsession. And yes, it does border on racism and antisemitism because people obsessed with israel ignore much worse stuff going on around the world (like the real genocide in Sudan, the real slaughter of muslim civilians in Chechnya). Do you really want to spend your time bashing a democracy and defending groups like Hamas and other fundamentalist muslims obsessed with destroying Israel, America, and all western freedoms and rights?

Mr. Freeman was on the board of CHINESE OIL COMPANIES and his 'think tank' was being financed by SAUDI ARABIA. These 2 bastions of freedom and "progressive" thought. Ya think that might have anything to do with his dismissal?? Oh, but the word "israel" was mentioned, so lets all become little ditto-heads and blame israel and this mythical all-powerful "lobby" (read - the jews) for everything! We can be like germany in 1938! Yay!

This is a preemptive surrender:

One place where Freeman found no defenders, though, was the Obama White House - which prepared talking points and dossiers to defend other troubled nominees - but which stayed on the sidelines during the Freeman fight.
