DETROIT — Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is out of jail. His ex-lover and top aide, Christine Beatty, still has weeks behind bars. But their text messages to one another _ the source of their political implosion and Detroit's global embarrassment _ continue to hit the public.

A new batch _ 682 pages in all _ was released Monday. Kilpatrick's attorneys on Tuesday filed a $100 million lawsuit against SkyTel, the company that released the messages to the news media. The lawsuit argues that releasing the messages violated the former mayor's rights. SkyTel counters it was compelled by court orders to release them.

The text messages detail more of Kilpatrick's explicit sexual escapades, and include intriguing messages involving family members and City Hall staffers.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny last week said the messages might be "shedding light on government misconduct," but there didn't appear to be anything obvious in the short bursts of expression.

There's Kilpatrick's wife, Carlita, texting her straying husband in May 2003 that she "had a bad dream last night ... that you had a girlfriend."

There's also a text by Kilpatrick's sister, Ayanna, who takes a dim view of her hometown.

"How do you educate voters in a city full of idiots...?!" she told Beatty and her brother.

The messages, in the thousands, are just a fraction of the hundreds of thousands possessed by the Wayne County prosecutor's office for use in the criminal case against Beatty and Kilpatrick. They had been filed with the court as part of the prosecution's effort to prove the messages' authenticity.

Kilpatrick and Beatty were charged with perjury and other crimes last year after texts published by the Detroit Free Press contradicted their courtroom denials of an affair. The pair had testified in a civil lawsuit brought by police officers who said their careers were ruined by Kilpatrick because of suspicions about his inner circle.

Kilpatrick and Beatty each pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. The ex-mayor left jail in February after 99 days and has been granted a probation transfer to Texas so he can take a high-tech sales job. His old paramour, a friend since high school, is due to be released April 15.

The messages had been under seal while prosecutors and Beatty's defense team wrangled over their admissibility as evidence. But after her guilty plea, the Free Press asked a judge to release them.

"Enough is enough," Beatty lawyer Mayer Morganroth said Monday in explaining why he didn't pursue an appeal.

The messages on city-issued pagers show Beatty as the loyal lover, relying on Kilpatrick for her physical and emotional needs as her marriage hits the rocks.

"I love how you can make me feel by just looking at me!" she wrote in December 2002.

Earlier that year, Beatty recalled the first time they had sex when she returned to Detroit after attending Howard University.

"At that time I was trying to make a teenage fantasy come true!" Kilpatrick replied.

In 2003, he wrote: "Nobody has ever, imean ever, excited me like you."

Well, maybe not. The messages show Kilpatrick exchanging sexual innuendo with other women. "I wish you could have two wives," one of them wrote.

The texts are mostly between Kilpatrick and Beatty, but communications with their spouses and other high-ranking city officials are part of the package, too:

In a September 2003 text to a staffer, Carlita Kilpatrick wrote that she didn't want to be dinner host to Detroit rapper Eminem. "I thought we were going to his house. When did it become mine."

And in January 2004, four years before Kilpatrick was charged with felonies that would end his reign at City Hall, a spokesman texted him and others that Kym Worthy, who would end up helping bring Kilpatrick down, was appointed Wayne County prosecutor.

"That's too bad!" replied city attorney Ruth Carter.

The guy can now go back and probably be Mayor of Detroit again in the near future. Because those folks in that city evidently don't care. Afterall, they re-elected him once after he and Conyers's wife had virtually destroyed that city and turned it into a 3rd world place.

No different that congressional re-elections, right? What is the incumbent re-election rate in congress? I would guess 85 to 95 percent, easily.

Based upon this, I think your entire country must be daft.

I always find it ridiculous and bemusing that after the individual who commits this adultery speaks out of his guilt in public their other halves are always standing by their side.

This is the problem of keeping-the-snake-in-the-cage. It is always better to keep the mind occupied with something constructive otherwise there will be more of Kilpatricks, vitters, spitzers, Craigs..........

Technology is great but communicating via word of mouth or face to face is the best. Text messages, emailing etc leaves indelible tracks.

How can they have over 600 pages of text messages. How does one find time for work and real life texting this much?

I say 'trash these telephones and go to work".

This is information we really don't need to know. I'd let it go already. He did the time. He's not mayor anymore. Let him move on.

You forgot one little detail. He's a Democrat. Funny how the media always seems to conveniently forget the party of disgraced/criminal/unethical Demorats. Yet, whenever a Republican of similar disrepute makes news, his party affiliaiton is front and center, usually in the headline. Funny that.

Once again there are so many in this country who is never satisfied with an individual paying his debt to society as dictated by the Judge in a judicial setting...no we must come in and piggyback on the sentence as allocated and extend it to the rest of the individual life. We forget to see our face and image in the faces of our fellow man. We forget how situations and circumstances in our own lives would impact our loved ones if a flash bulb was focused on our every action in life...words we spoke "in private" and activities that human beings find themselves in through stupidity or immaturity that if projected upon a screen for the whole world to witness...how would we feel if "we" and not someone else..was the recipient of such scrutiny. Before one takes a righteous breath ....please remember that but for the grace of God there goes YOU or I.

He's been kicked out of office, disgraced, jailed and has paid for his 'crime'. This is ridiculous. Where is this getting someone a job, stopping a foreclosures, getting healthcare, education, food, clothing and transporation? If your answer is it is not, move on and don't even bother.

just going by memory so I may get the details wrong--but he didn't just have sex.

What he did was he lied, under oath AND [this is the key] he had the two cops who'd investigated it and other rumors/charges about him, run out of the Detroit Police Dept.--he ruined their careers.

They sued and won (out-of-court settlement?)--$9,000,000 (or $6 mil?) of PUBLIC MONEY.

Their case led to the text messages coming out.

Using MILLIONS of tax $$$ to cover his misdeeds is absolutely, intolerable.

His statements to the effect that HE was the victim made him look pathetic and shabby.

Too, just a rumor, but the rumor is that a woman--a stripper?--attended a party at the city-owned mayor's mansion, and was going to tell about it, and she was gunned down; execution style.

When the Dems had their convention in D.C. (?) there was a story: secret service was disgusted by Kwame.

At the time I didn't think much of it, but given what's come out....

Also--messages show people doing favors for Kwame's pals and getting city contracts.

He lived for his own needs and wants, breaking rules left and right. Plain and simple.

What more could you ask for than the kind of evidence on hand?

He's dark. He is obviously a VICTIM of The Man. Not possible he is a criminal. Quit picking on the

The only good news about this is that Jon Stewart might just bring "R. Kelly impersonator" back on the Daily Show. That guy is hilarious.

Why is this such a big issue for this guy to be blowed up and end up in jail ? How many public officials have lied about having affairs and have not gone to jail ?

He got people fired. He caused the city to pay up money so that his scandal will not come out in open. His mistress lied under the oath. ( i think he did not lie, he never answered the answer and started on a rant)

Kilpatrick denied that he and his chief of staff had a relationship, but the reason he lied was not only to cover up his sexual indiscresions but the two had discussed in text messages how they decided to fire Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown in 2003, an ouster that led him to sue the city for 9 million dollars - he won his suite - so the Mayor's denial, under oath cost the city of Detroit a lot of money - and that pissed a lot of people off.

And the Deputy Chief was investigating the murder (with DPD ammo) of a stripper last seen leaving the mayoral mansion. These people really don't know what's going on.
