Levi Johnston, Bristol Palin's Ex, Speaks: Couple Broke Up After Fight, Need To 'Mature' Before Marriage (VIDEO)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The former fiance of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter says he hopes they can reconcile at some point.

Levi Johnston told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday that he and 18-year-old Bristol Palin ended their engagement after deciding it would be better if they separated for a while.

The two are the parents of an infant son, Tripp, born on Dec. 27. Johnston says the couple needed time to grow up before following through on marriage plans.

Says 19-year-old Johnston, "I'd like to get back together with her. I don't know what she's thinking."

Asked if they are civil when chatting, he says, "Yeah. For the most part."

As for the future, he adds, "Whatever happens, happens."

Sarah Palin announced her daughter's pregnancy days after being picked by John McCain to be his GOP vice presidential running mate.

Johnston says he sees his son "whenever I want to."

He seems genuinely sad about the situation, but I bet a marriage isn't going to happen. Most teen dads get left behind as time goes on, even if they don't try to be deadbeats and noshows. The teens usually can't support the family themselves, the grandparents don't usually help the new family live independently and sometimes also won't let them sleep together in their houses, and these two teens are probably mismatched in aspirations.

Palin´s election was lost, no need for the marriage, I guess.
If it was in Sarah´s PLAN for the two to marry EVER, they would have married BEFORE the baby was born out of wedlock, NO???

The part in the video where the reporter finds it odd that Wasilla was "a place where no one seemed to mind that there was a moose strolling by" is priceless. Way to do some research, dude. Moose are all over the place here. Anchorage has somewhere from 300 to 500 moose that live in the city year round and that number goes up in the winter. Pretty much every area has at least one moose that roams the neighborhood regularly. My friend's kids go to a school that has a special whistle for moose or bear sightings when the kids are outside.

They are not adults --- they are KIDS. They are kids who have kids, who love their kids, but still need to grow up. How can anyone at that age begin to know what kind of parenting skills to use when they haven't even tasted adult, indepedent life yet? They broke up because they are not ready to be parents -- THEY ARE STIILL KIDS. It doesn't matter what kind of upbringing they have, whether the quality of parenting was bad or good--if you are too young and not ready -- you are not going to be mature enough to handle raising a child. No matter what generation or attitude you have about raising children --- IT IS TOUGH TO RAISE KIDS -- alone or as a couple.

Of course he wants to get back together with Bristol. Shes his gravy. It's either hanging at home with mom and her drug charges or hanging with the Palins lakeside in Wasilla or the Governors house in Juneau. Plus, it could be the Whitehouse in four years. Heck, he could put a hockey rink next to the Rose Garden.

I've seen this a million times before - girl/woman wants to have a kid. So she finds some poor schlub and says she is infertile. She gets pregnant and dumps the guy, who is still on the hook for half the expenses. This time the grandparents have money to help. Many times, that doesn't happen.
