Obama And Geithner

Faced with a growing chorus of national outrage, the Obama administration has changed its position regarding the $165 million in bonuses that AIG is distributing to the small group of employees whose risky trades brought the company to the brink of collapse. President Obama today excoriated AIG, saying the company was in its present position because of "recklessness and greed":

"It's hard to understand how derivative traders at AIG warranted any bonuses, much less $165 million in extra pay," Obama said at the outset of an appearance to announce help for small businesses hurt by the deep recession.

"How do they justify this outrage to the taxpayers who are keeping the company afloat," the president said.

Obama stated that Treasury Secretary would "pursue every legal avenue to block these bonuses and make the American taxpayer whole," and a White House official told the Wall Street Journal that the Treasury will use a planned $30-billion infusion as a lever to force AIG to replay the bonuses.

However, the administration knew about these bonuses and, while outraged, seemed initially resigned to the idea that they could not force AIG to halt the bonuses because the company was "contractually obligated" to pay them. The New York Times reports in their story from Saturday night:

Word of the bonuses last week stirred such deep consternation inside the Obama administration that Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner told the firm they were unacceptable and demanded they be renegotiated, a senior administration official said. But the bonuses will go forward because lawyers said the firm was contractually obligated to pay them...

...The administration official said the Treasury Department did its own legal analysis and concluded that those contracts could not be broken. The official noted that even a provision recently pushed through Congress by Senator Christopher J. Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat, had an exemption for such bonus agreements already in place.

Indeed, one of Obama's senior economic advisers, Larry Summers, went on the ABC Sunday talk show "This Week" to reiterate this very point, saying, "We are a country of law. There are contracts. The government cannot just abrogate contracts."

The AIG bonuses dominated the Sunday talk shows, however, and there was such bipartisan anger at the company that the chorus demanding AIG either halt the bonuses or the government should step in and force a halt to the payments began to sound louder and louder.

Sunday night, the bipartisan rage against AIG had reached a boiling point. Monday morning, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was issuing subpoenas to AIG and Rep. Barney Frank was calling for people to be fired. The populist backlash had reached a level which the Obama administration could not dismiss, and the result was the president promising to use every means available to stop AIG from paying out these bonuses.

Faced with a growing chorus of national outrage, the Obama administration has changed its position regarding the $165 million in bonuses that AIG is distributing to the small group of employees whose ...

Geithner and Summers are partial to Wall Street. They do not like Government takeovers or limits on Executive pay. Given today's anti-Wall Street feelings, they should both go. I would imagine another round of executive bonuses would do them in.

By the way, Liddy is an old friend of Secretary Paulson. Both are ex-employees of Godman Sachs. I am sure that is why Goldman Sachs got 12.9 Billion from AIG. They are all in it together. If they don't "get the message" very soon, none of them will have a job.

I put all of the jokers on Wall Street in with Bernie Madoff. They are crooks and Wall Street is a complete scam.

Along with "Madoff" and his ponzi scheme, AIG's bonuses are just a diversion. Magic. As we get all steamed about Madoff, get all steamed about the bonuses, they are taking money out the back door. Buying time to build a facade to prevent us from seeing the REAL criminals. These issues are small potatoes. Headline fillers. Slight of hand. Cover up for the real criminals. "Problem, reaction, solution". They created the problem (and blamed it on us greedy Americans who took out mortgages we couldn't afford!), we are reacting - end the fed, don't give em bonuses, help, the banks are failing!, and then they very creeps who caused this, become our saviors and offer us a new world currency. Electronic to boot! Think about that. You don't play by their rules (and we all know there are two sets of rules, one for us, one for them), then you don't eat.

The first really dumb thing Obama has done is to put Geithner as Treasury Sec. He was a failure at the New YOrk Fed who should have known all this toxic business was going on. He drafter the bail out plans for all of these worthless crooks.

If Obama does not have any better judgment that he has shown so far he is a one termer for sure. Another Jimmy Carter for the Democrats. Hopefully Mitt Romney will run and win. He can clean up all of this mess and has the sound judgment to know what to do.

Middle Class Democrats are Mad as HECK!

"CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN" is NOT HOPING for "TRICKLE DOWN" LOANS from Republican BANKSTERS/FED WHO RUN OUR LIVES!

Direct "Government Banking" to Consumers/Businesses at Low Current Rates/FEES, not unlike the Welfare given to Wall Street! There is No Direct Line of CREDIT FLOW from Government (LIKE that to WALL STREET) to MAIN STREET business/consumers!

Bypass the Big WS Banksters until their CULTURE is CURED and they can be TRUSTED!

Geithner and Bernanke must SHOW their Loyalty to Middle Class AMERICANS to gain Democratic supportive for MORE Welfare to the Corrupt Big WS Banks/AIG and preserving the FED.

The only Demonstrated Goal by Geithner/Bernanke's is Bank Welfare! No effort to create an alternative for HONEST Middle Class Loans has been put forward!

It appears to us "OUTSIDERS" that the "INSIDERS" are still running the Economy for Themselves doing their periodic long term and short term "Harvests of the Middle Class."

MAIN STREET excepts more than "TRICKLE DOWN" flows through the untrustworthy Big WS Banking System that we KNOW is run by the "FLUNKY FED" OWNED and OPERATED for the Benefit of the Elite Banks.

So Main Street "WILTS" while SanSilly RANTS and WALL STREET Elites get their $6.4 to $10.8 Million BONUSES and Goldman "Double-DIPS" through AIG!

the link above is for an anti-Obama site, I'm not sure if it's based in any fact at all since Obama-haters now have zero cred. What if it were true? How could we believe it?

I totally agree in questioning sources, but they do use credible links to where they got their info. Plus, it's all verifiable.

may I remind you that this "change" was not "brung" by Obama or his adminitration? So if you're gonna make fun of the change mantra, try to be sure you are placing the blame for your perception of the lack of change in the right place....Bush, where it belongs.

How did AIG get to be in such control without controlled monitoring of Bailout folks? AIG appears to be snowballing any and all who are not within an Ear to abide by AIG's Mantra..Bonus, Bon-us Bo-nus to all who respond to our call. Now after saying that, what happened to the rule in the early 80's that if you get perks , rule is they are treated like other income and becomes TAXABLE. AIG has the money, they decided to give out as a BONUS..It's their baby, fuhgeddaboutit, TAX them, WHOLE d...thing done deal. What difference does it make who knew what When? RESET and NO MORE assists to AIG. If they claim poor mouth, SHAME on them. When I get paid for a job done, I can't go back to my boss and say "oh, I spent all by Friday evening.and I am so ashame-I gave my salary to folks who dropped in to say hi this weekend. now, I need more money because I forgot to take care of the house hold." Wake up People, I am an old woman but, even I can see some light in the dark. We need to bring about some more change by changing all the parameters coming along with all that we inherit by making acceptable or not acceptable by not allowing whatever to become a TAX to me. Mr G get to the bottom of this, and do the best for the American people.

The GREEDY CULTURE OF WALL STREET Continues! It MUST BE BR0KEN!

They think it is 2006 and the GRAVY TRAIN is still ROLLING and the Taxpayer should "FOOT the BILL!"

This Culture of Multi-Million Dollar Incomes must BE BR0KEN NOW! Americans will NOT tolerate IT!

The CEO of Toyota USA makes less than $1 Million, US President makes $400,000 and with a big stretch a total benefit of $1.5 Million! NO EMPLOYEE on Wall Street should get more than the US President!

It is time to limit ALL Executive and Manager PAY to the President's Benefit Package as computed by the Government Accounting Office!

The greed culture is alive and well within the Congress. Chris Dodd who is most responsible for this bonus mess got over $100,000 in campaign contributions from AID as the largest in all of the Congress. A bribe? That is what it should be called and Democrat Dodd needs to be sent packing home!! We need to stop being Republicans and Democrats and concentrate on being Americans who demand a cleaning house in DC. These Wall Street crooks count on us all being dumnb enough to keep sending these sorry Congress members back and back. Barney Frank should be in jail and yet Democrats make him Chairman of the Finance Committee because he has seniority. What fools they must think Democrats and Republicans are to put up with this.

You're exactly right. We need to clean house. We need to stop saying if we are dem. or repub. and stand together on this. I'm sick and tired of them spending my money whenever and on whatever. We all need to be on the White House lawn. If they want to give money away, give it to us.

Of course they could have dismissed it. BushCo did it all the time. We voted for Obama BECAUSE he listens and responds to the American public, so why the big surprise?

Because ObamaCo knew all along about the bonuses and even wrote a protection amendment in to the bill.

Obama is first and foremost a politician.

Obama is the biggest snake oil salesman of all. We need to forget party and worry about our country for our kids. Be big enough to jump on Democrats or Republicans to blame the corrupt one in a scandal and stop all this blind mindset of " If they are in my party the blame must be placed on the other party". How stupid can that be??

Its seems to me that Wall St. is too big for anything,
1. too big to fail
2. too big for the govt to regulate and tighten
3. too big for itself
4.too big to think about the troubles that it brought upon itself.
5.too big, too BIG.

Enough already.

Nationalize AIG, clean up this mess, then break it up into little companies and sell those off.

As I write here:
AIG and the Case for Nationalization
http://www.somedork.com/daily-ramblings/aig-and-the-case-for-nationalization/

This can be done while keeping the free market principles this country was founded upon.
