New York Times:

FOR years, television viewers, journalists who write about TV and services that compile listings have wondered how to refer to a certain cable network: Sci Fi Channel? Sci-Fi Channel? SciFi Channel? SCI FI Channel?

Soon, to paraphrase Rod Serling -- whose vintage series, "The Twilight Zone," is a mainstay of the Sci Fi Channel -- executives will submit for public approval another name, not only of sight and sound but of mind, meant to signal a channel whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead -- your next stop, Syfy.

Plans call for Sci Fi and its companion Web site (scifi.com) to morph into the oddly spelled Syfy -- pronounced the same as "Sci Fi" -- on July 7. The new name will be accompanied by the slogan "Imagine Greater," which replaces a logo featuring a stylized version of Saturn.

Remember when you first heard of the Sci-Fi channel? Then remember when you saw it. What happened?

I used to think that purposely misspelling something (song / name) was a relatively new thing in the media; "cool and hip", as you said. This "clever originality" appears to have been present for decades.

When you see a "rebrand" like this, it usually means that an executive needs to justify his existence in the organization.

Why...Sci Fi was fine...

The channel is really suffering under the new ownership...going down hill, but still a few bright spots...

At first I was offended by this idea, but considering all the godawful dreck produced by the channel, it's probably a good thing for the science fiction genre to get as much distance as it can from the schlockmeisters at NBC Universal. For every Battlestar Galactica they make, there's 10 original movies directed by somebody's nephew who went to film school for a semester ... never mind all the ghosts and wrestlers and other nonsense that has nothing to do with sci-fi.

bring back The Dresden Files for Pete's sake!

Really. Why they subject us to that B-movie cr@p and get rid of good series like that is beyond me.

That's true. It doesn't matter what you call it if the programming sucks.
