ABC News' Brian Hartman Reports: President Obama's latest shovel-ready project is close to home -- in fact, right in his own yard. In an effort to promote healthy eating, the first family will be planting a vegetable garden right on the White House grounds.

ABC News' Ann Compton and Sunlen Miller report that the new White House vegetable garden will be dug up and planted on the South grounds of the White House -- near the fountain but out of view of the main house.

That's wonderful. The President is leading by example. Fred Smilek is the acting president of the Society to Save Endangered Species. It was founded two years ago by Fred Smilek along with his two best friends Charles and Jonathan. http://www.fredjsmilek.com

How delightful it is to have a President who gets both the substance and the symbolism right, and is acting so quickly to keep his campaign promises. And thanks also to Alice Waters and Michael Pollan, who've been touting the idea of a White House vegetable garden. Pollan published an article late last year with this and many other great ideas for the new President. Try to find his interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, for a terrific introduction to these issues.

Agreed on the symbolism 100%.

The substance??

These two bills are nothing short of an assault on small farms, organics and the rights of Americans to source their own food.........in short the are everything that big agri business wants.
HR875(1) and S425(2) are wrong in every way. A link to a detailed look at their implications.

This is awesome! I've had a backyard garden for the past few years. Nothing like fresh homegrown tomatoes!

This is so super smart: A WH veggie garden!! What a super intelligent way to motivate Americans to embrace healthy eating via antioxidant-rich vegetables! Suzanne Sommers and her husband have a veggie garden. They eat some meals directly from their garden. To promote health and reverse or control some cardiovascular and cancer diagnoses, what better way than to elevate vegetables to the esteemed status of a WH garden. You can't do much better than that for exposure. Next Up: Dark berry and grape orchards for brain and heart health.

For anyone who likes this story, for anyone who thinks home gardens and more small organic farms are a good thing. Please learn all about two bills, HR875(1) and S425(2)

While we all can sit around and sing Pete Seeger songs and pretend that the Obama garden represents reality, or we can deal with the fact that we are now under assault by Congress, the Senate and the Obama White House with their war on small farms.

Get informed. The laws they pass are more important than this lovely patch at the White House.

Their war isnt on small farms, it is agains paying the conglomerate farmers. They are going to assist the small farmers. The govt has been paying millions to huge farms making untold profits and nothing to smaller farmers. That is going to change. The pmts to the large farming conglomerates is going to stop and assistance will in turn be given to smaller farms.

Watch on youtube "criminalizing organic farms". HR 875 will destroy small farms and puts organics at risk. Rosa DeLauro sponsored the bill and her husband does business with Monsanto. The Federal Govt. wants to control our food supply.
