Watching Obama In Tehran

Mideast Iran Us

The author is an Iranian student who writes under a pseudonym.

Inside Iran, it is practically a given that religious people must also be devout supporters of the Islamic state. My parents are not an exception. That a heretic like me should arise from such a conservative family has been described by a friend as a "paradigm of boomerang irony."

On Friday morning I eagerly waited for an hour while downloading President Obama's video message to the Iranian people. I was curious to see my parents' reactions. My mother, doing her cleaning rituals for Nowruz, the Persian new year, was not interested. Neither was my father: "It's not the first time they give us this line: 'You Iranians are a civilized people enslaved by evil terrorist Ayatollahs, blah blah.' Plus, It's written in English."

"It's a little different this time," I explained. "It is a video message - with Farsi subtitles."

Obama's speech was well-crafted. He spoke to both the government and the people at the same time, something his predecessors seldom did. More than once he used the country's official title, the "Islamic Republic of Iran," the way Iranian authorities prefer it to be called. Moreover, when he had to hint to Iran's support of terrorism, he dropped the -ism. This subtle ambiguity however was lost in the video my father watched, when the Farsi subtitle used the word "terror" unchanged. In Farsi the word "terror" has no emotional connotation and is only associated with acts of terrorism.

My father was quick to observe this:"Didn't I tell you?" However, he did not seem as confident in saying this as before.

A few minutes later, sitting on a couch next to me, and facing the table decorated with haft-sin for Nowruz, he asked, "What do you think?"

"Only an idiot like Khamenei can let this golden opportunity to improve things slip away!"

Actually, I only thought this. In my situation you cannot be too liberal in voicing your inner feelings.

"I don't know. What do you think?" I said.

"You know, even if he is being honest..." - the first time I heard my father apply the adjective "honest" to an American president, even just in a conditional phrase - "...there are many there that disagree with him."

"The same goes in here." I replied. "Many don't want that to happen. Just like Israel does not want rapprochement." It is hardly a compliment to remind someone they are actually standing on the same side as their "enemy" on an issue.

"You know," he mused, "when the Soviet Union wanted to warm ties with Iran, they asked Rafsanjani to ask people not to chant 'Death to the Soviets' any more. And they did it. Just like that. If the US is serious and proves its good intentions, I don't see why the same thing cannot happen to the 'Death to America.' "

My mother is even more religious than my father - and even more inflexible in her support of the state's propaganda. She did not bother to watch the video message, instead challenging me: "Are you this happy to see Rahbar's [Supreme Leader Khamenei] Nowruz speech?"

"Hell, no!" I snapped, quickly pivoting to offer a plausible explanation. "Because he does it every year, and that for almost an hour!"

Speaking of our Supreme Leader, Khamenei is a person who uses the word "enemy" in his speeches as often as we use auxiliary verbs in our sentences. Even my mother, had she watched the video, would have been hard pressed to find any trace of animosity in Obama's disarming speech. By throwing the ball into Khamenei's court in such a flattering fashion, Obama had rendered the Supreme Leader literally speechless. Not surprisingly, the state-run TV and Radio, which are directly controlled by the Supreme Leader, have not even alluded to Obama's speech.

All in all, those Iranians who can access any alternative media have been very happy about Obama's speech, but nothing is ever simple. As one news forum commenter lamented: "I presume Mr. Obama is not very familiar with the fact that our officials have a master's degree in incinerating the opportunities."

A user - perhaps a younger one - used more colloquial language commenting under the video's link in Balatarin.com: "I wish Obama were our president."

If they didn't have nuclear weapons, they'd be a meaningless country. Just another country on a map that no one cares about.
07:06 PM on 03/25/2009
Please cite a credible reference that Iran has nuclear weapons. There is no reliable source that I know of, and all reliable sources of which I am aware say that Iran does not possess either a nuclear weapon or delivery system.
11:34 PM on 03/27/2009
Funny you say that because you could not be more wrong. We only bully around the countries that lack nuclear weapons. Do you see us posturing up to Pakistan, India, N. Korea, Russia, China? No. Why? Because they have nuclear weapons. We just target the weaker countries and bully them around.

These actions are great for encouraging countries to become nuclear do to the fact that we will stop bullying them once they have done so. So, I don't blame Iran for trying to go nuclear, they just want us to step off their nuts. We reward people for all the wrong things and wonder why things are not going our way. American politicians are moronic when it comes to basic psychology.

President Obama honestly believes that all PEOPLE of all nations want peace, health, and opportunity for themselves and those they care about. I agree. It's the propaganda of each nation that keeps the world full of hate and fear. A feeling that propels people toward violence and anger in order to protect what they feel is in jeopardy. A feeling that nations use in order for their rulers to grab power and riches.....just like bush did.
President Obama is unique in that he has the personality to reach out directly to the People! His good-heart, his good soul is obvious in his eyes and apparent in his goals.
This could just be the catalyst that inspires the People to work toward peace and to reject hate and fear. I certainly hope so. There are enough horrors and sorrows in this world without war and terror added to the mix.

"The same goes in here." I replied. "Many don't want that to happen. Just like Israel does not want rapprochement."

Did you or your father say that Israel does not want rapprochement? May I ask with whom they do not want this? You are a little misinformed my friend. See Israel's history of peace with Egypt & Jordan and then point me to the same with Hamas. The funny thing, Hamas can't even make an agreement of peace with their Palestinian Fatah brothers.... and you expect them to stop launching rockets into Israel and Israel stopping the response in order to protect their citizens?

You are delusional.
02:34 PM on 03/25/2009
No, NEguru, Telmah is not "delusional" at all. If Israel really wants rapprochement with the Palestinians then I look forward to an Obama-like overture from them, but I won't hold my breath. Unfortunately, theocratic forces in both Iran and Israel stand in the way of rational dialogue.
02:55 PM on 03/25/2009
Apples to oranges, Egypt and Jordan have not been ousted from their fatherland. There's no reason for anything but peace in their case. Palestinians want their home back. Don't you see the difference?
08:16 AM on 03/25/2009
I am praying for a better day.
11:45 PM on 03/27/2009
I hope you do more than just pray.

Very brave and inspirational article. Part of the problem with both our country and the IR of Iran is that governments do not provide information without slanted opinion. When Bush declared the axis of evil it became easy for those who want to get along and not think to adopt that same opinion. Likewise the American media provides only images of staged protests, burning flags and hateful chants from Iran. In effect it is quite easy to accept the perspective of our governments as our own when the reality can be so different. It becomes a catch 22 because both sides think we hate the other! The result is blind anger, distrust and no meaningful exchanges as human beings.

I am proud that our President has both the intelligence and a non-judgmental approach to tear down these false walls. His video message was to show that respect for other fellow humans does not mean weakness but rather opens the way to a new path of thinking. I hope the people of the IR of Iran can convince their leaders to do the same thing so we can all work to defuse the world of so much fear and anger.

03:48 AM on 03/25/2009
Just what does it "inspire" in you?
The artcle is obviously slanted in favor of Obama's speech, which is o.k. but it shows clearly that s/he is extremely hostile to Iranian leaders by calling Khameniei an "idiot" which he clearly is not. He is a wise, and knowledgeable man with great advisors all around him. He KNOWS what he is talking about. this article is directed at the ignorant American public because, unfortunately, it sells.
11:36 AM on 03/25/2009
Khamiei is not anidiot. He's a religious fanatic who is leading Iran down the path of unceasing confrontation with those who disagree with his dogma. Both inside and outside of Iran.
12:46 PM on 03/25/2009
You know for a fact that Khameniei is not an idiot, eh? You know this dictator well?

Too bad you don't like the young woman's feelings about our President's message. That's your problem. We are inspired by those who want to forge links with other nations. Is that so hard for you to understand?
02:00 AM on 03/25/2009
It seems to me that the younger generation of both countries want the same. Peace, respect and good leaders.

Wow. Thanks to the author for providing us with an insider's perspective of the response to President Obama's message. I hope that one day her mother will choose to watch the video. Great article.

It must be galling for Iran - a nation which has, since its revolution, started no wars and occupied none, and has fought one war which was initiated by an American client, likely at US urging - to be lectured on responsible foreign policy by the US, a nation which is presently occupying two other countries, waging a covert war in a third, and arming and financing the occupation of a fourth.
08:35 PM on 03/24/2009
Spot on.
03:50 AM on 03/25/2009
Exactly! Well stated. But, where are those Americans who understand and don't fall prey to anti-Iran propaganda like this report?

I wouldn't call it anti-Iranian propaganda. The current administration is likely sincerely attempting to engage Iran, and I'm sure sees Iranian involvement as key to resolving some difficult problems relating to Iraq, Afghanistan, the opium trade, and resupply of it's forces in Afghanistan. Iran has some strong cards to play these days.

The problem is that the same american voters who voted in what is likely to prove a rational and sincere Obama presidency also voted for George Bush, who was dangerously crazy. How can the US be trusted not to do so again?
