ew.com:

Today, David Lynch launched David Lynch Foundation Television (www.dlf.tv), a new online venture that he calls a "celebration of consciousness, creativity and bliss." As you probably know, in addition to being one of the most envelope-pushingly creative filmmakers working today -- I still get freaked out thinking about Bob from Twin Peaks -- Lynch is a devotee of Transcendental Meditation with 35 years experience. His foundation is dedicated to teaching at-risk youngsters to meditate as a way of coping with stress. Now, he's got this new site dedicated to all things Transcendental Meditation -- or just TM for those in the know -- and it's chock-full of videos, docs, and other odds and ends that Lynch fans will gobble up.

Please be aware & informed:

The (standard) modus operandi of the TM missionaries is to DELIBERATELY LIE & to MISINFORM school STUDENTS, PARENTS / GUARDIANS, & staff about the 'Transcendental Meditation' organization & procedures. The TM movement has used various front-organizations and program-labels over the years. One of their current evangelical guises is the innocuous-sounding "QUIET TIME" program in schools. The "Quiet Time" program permission slips (given to students along with their lunch forms, etc. at the beginning of the school year) only mention the slogan-label "Quiet Time" -- however these permission slips DO NOT PROVIDE ANY ACCURATE DESCRIPTION WHATSOEVER of the TM procedures & ("Puja" religious worship & chanting) initiation ceremony, nor any mention of the "Transcendental Meditation" organization or background info. about TM agendas ("World Plan", "Sidhi-flyers", "crowned Rajas", etc.)

I was so skeptical when I first heard about TM. I changed nothing in my life except that I added TM for 20 minutes twice a day as instructed. Immediately after learning, I experienced much more energy in my daily activity. After practicing TM regularly for a while, I couldn't deny all the benefits accruing in my life and it was obvious to me it was because I practiced TM twice a day. The increasing energy continued and at the same time I was more relaxed and MUCH happier. I was participating at the time in a very challenging course of study at college that involved many long hours of work. The benefits came without any effort on my part. it was such an amazing experience to have something so easy, that I did for such a short period of time, that took up so little of my day, make such a huge improvement in my quality of life! Little did I know when I started as such a skeptic, that it would be the best decision I ever made.

I love TM too. I learned when I was a child, and it’s been great help to me in dealing with whatever comes my way. No matter what happens, I know that twice a day I will experience the deep silence within me, get that rest which is deeper than any sleep. Then my mind is clearer, stronger, I feel so much happier, and everything is easier to handle. TM does not solve your problems for you, but better than that, it helps you achieve the strength and clarity needed to deal with any situation and be successful

This article about the new David Lynch TV site is great. David is so creative and is involving some other fantastic artists in this new venture. Such creative, energetic, positive people. It is amazing that David Lynch has been doing TM for 37 years - every day, twice a day. And he is doing such a great job in making TM available to children under tremendous stress in these inner city schools.

I have been doing TM for years and have nothing but good effect from the twice-daily practice. It reduces stress, keeps me healthy and happy. And it is completely effortless to do, and so simple to learn. And what I also like about TM is that there are over 600 studies showing how good it is for my mind and body. Have a look at the web site www.TM.org for all scoop on the Transcendental Meditation program.

And Whow! I loved that post by PewterPan about his experience with Transcendental Meditation.

It was the year of the Partridge Family, eight cent postage stamps and blue jeans with bell bottoms. That was 1971 and I was an under achieving senior in a middle American High School when I saw a funny looking poster on the way to my American History class. It had a large black and white picture of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on it and a lecture on Transcendental Meditation* was announced for the next day in the school auditorium.
The speaker was a young man in a suit who spoke serenely of the silence deep within us and of the simple mental technique by which we could experience it and enjoy its benefits in our day to day life. I was very impressed with his calm demeanor and he seemed to really embody the principles of which he spoke..

I attended the seven step course and boy was it great. I experienced a deep, sweet indescribable silence right on the day I learned. Right away my life began to change. Not because of any information I was given but because of the beautiful experience of deep inner silence that I now experienced twice a day as I practiced my Transcendental Meditation in the privacy of my bedroom.

sorry -- i should have posted this 3-part letter starting at the end so it could be read in the proper order. the first section is in a post below.

(cont. from below)

The time commitment has been woven into the fabric of my spiritual life. My prayer and preparation to celebrate the Sacraments of the Catholic liturgical tradition, especially the Holy Eucharist, has been augmented by practicing the TM and TM-Sidhi programs.

The daily centering experience as a meditator and a Sidha has deepened my appreciation of the contemplative dimensions of mental prayer taught in the Catholic spiritual tradition. As a calmer and more centered person, my prayerful reading of the sacred scriptures is more profound and rewarding. Deeper meaning seems to surface as I read the various passages of the books of the Holy Bible.

My prayer life has become richer. Life has slowed down interiorly even as it has accelerated externally. In addition, using the various easy Yogic breathing exercises as well as the Yoga postures I learned from the TM Movement has increased my lung capacity and my physical strength. I look and feel younger than my age. (cont.)

The distress that comes with being a pastor in a Catholic parish in a 21st century urban setting in the mid-west of the USA, as well as just living in the modern world of instant communication is potentially debilitating. Regular practice of TM has proven to be an effective way of dissolving stress as well as an effortless way to slow me down.

These benefits are attested to in numerous scientific studies that have been conducted on the TM technique. The best "study," however, has been my personal experience.

I have recommended that friends and parishioners learn the TM technique. Some have. Those who have continued to practice the technique regularly have experienced the same results as I have.

I certainly recommend Transcendental Meditation to everyone, particularly to those in the society who are responsible for the spiritual and intellectual growth of congregations and students. I have used TM as a tool that has helped me in my vocation as a priest and as a man of faith and prayer. The technique has only helped me experience the spiritual core of my religious belief at a deeper level.

Sincerely,
Father Leonard Dubi

Father Leonard Dubi, December 1, 2008

I am an active 66-year-old Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago who has served 7 parishes in a 40-plus year career. I began practicing Transcendental Meditation (TM) in my middle 30s while serving in a third assignment as an associate pastor. I went on to serve two more parishes as an associate pastor until the archbishop made me a pastor of a parish that I served for 21 years. I am in my present assignment as a pastor for almost three years.

The practice of TM has been among the highest priorities in my life since I began to meditate 33 years ago. I also became a Sidha by learning the advanced TM-Sidhi program, including Yogic Flying, 17 years ago. During this entire time span I have practiced these techniques faithfully, twice a day, 365 times a year, including all the secular and religious holidays. I have meditated on airplanes, ocean liners, buses and cars; in airports, bus stations, hospital chapels, banquet halls, friend's homes as well as my favorite prayer chair in my room. (cont.)

Re The TM Technique: You know you have found something valuable, when the CLOSER you look the BETTER you realize it is! I looked into it and found out the 350 peer-reviewed research studies were conducted on over 10,000 subjects who were practicing the TM technique. These studies included numerous randomized controlled trials, along with eight meta-analyses of 597 separate studies on the effects of meditation. The studies were conducted at Harvard Medical School, Yale Medical School, Stanford Medical School, University of PA, University of Kentucky, and more than 200 other independent institutions, and were done by 360 scientists from 29 countries. All total, over 30,0000 subjects (participating in TM, other techniques or controls) were involved in the hundreds of research studies on TM. The majority of these studies compared TM to other practices or control groups. This is rigorous science that's able to separate the wheat from the chaff. My thanks to all involved.

I have an acquaintance who is a middle school teacher. At the time that he visited one of the schools in San Franscisco where the TM technique was introduced he did not practice TM. (It's not 'required' to practice TM during Quiet Time, btw, but most kids do). He sat in an auditorium with 600 kids who practiced their technique together and his jaw literally dropped and stayed dropped for the ten minutes they were meditating. He said that to have his students be that peaceful in a group they'd have to be sound asleep -- and good luck getting 600 (or even six!) of them to sleep. My friend learned TM himself a few weeks later. His own family learned, too. His school is now on a waiting list to have TM in its curricullum.

It is not true that the TM students lost points on their standardized tests, Gail. You're making stuff up.

I just came across this beautiful letter at a web site called http://www.TruthAboutTM.org and I thought some might enjoy it. Peace!
" I have been a Catholic Sister for twenty-two years and have been practicing Transcendental Meditation for fourteen years. I have found this technique to be very beneficial in different aspects of my life. It has helped calm and focus my mind during times of stress as well as in everyday life. I have also noticed physiological effects such as less muscle tension, more relaxed breathing and just overall greater awareness. In addition, there have been many scientific studies to support the benefits of Transcendental Meditation.
Since Transcendental Meditation is not a religion nor is it taught as a doctrine, it does not interfere or conflict with my Catholic Christian faith. In my years of practicing this technique I believe it has enhanced my prayer and Christian life."

"The Middle European Journal of Medicine found that out of 700 studies on TM spanning 40 years, only 10 were conducted in the clinical tradition of using strict control groups, randomization and placebos. Of those 10, four of the studies recruited subjects that had already shown an interest in TM." -- see website:

Gail, if you were to look at the abstract of the study rather than what Rick Ross writes, you'd see that the truth is very different. The review only looked at a subset of TM studies -- those related to cognitive function. And Mr. Ross shows little understanding of clinical research, since randomized-controlled trials are not standard. Other than pharmaceutical research, they're relatively rare, given the difficulty and expense of conducting them. And control groups in clinical studies typically don't use a placebo. Rather, they generally use an intervention that has previously been found to be effective. Relying on information on websites opposed to cults isn't a good idea.
