no need for an i-phone, just get a touch, which is an ipod and the web browser. Between that and the cheapest pay as you go phone, you are all set. No monthly contracts1 Now that i have a touch, i would never never be w/o one. The apps are very cool, and it it very easy to add and delete - I didn't know about the balance app, I will be adding that for sure.

Another useful free app is the flashlight, which i have used many times while fumbling for my house/car keys in the dark.

So agree: "no need for an iPhone, just get a Touch" and I have a cheap pay-as-you-go mobile phone from Virgin Mobile; I've even ditched my Palm (sorry!) and converted to the contacts and calendar on the iPod Touch.

I usually pay cash or use my debit card for purchases so I rarely carry a checkbook these days. To help keep track of my debit purchases, anbd cash withdrawals I use "Balance", a free app available at the iTunes App Store.

It works well, it was designed for a reasonable ease of use, and it does quite a lot.

I like:

My Car--notes GPS when you leave your auto parked and can guide you back.
ChessLite--decent chess game while killing time.
Translator­--multiple language dictionaries
Evernote--clip items from websites from whatever computer you are on and then they can be viewed from your iPhone.

I like the I-Phone from what I've read, but AT&T just plain sucks. I could never leave Verizon, and my Blackberry Curve has a lot of nice features as well. Plus cool apps...but I would like "MyCar"...­..
