WASHINGTON _ President Barack Obama seized the bully pulpit Thursday and reprised the best of his acclaimed campaign skills in an unprecedented Internet town hall from the White House _ a direct sales pitch for Americans to get behind his $3.6 trillion budget and be patient as he tries to right the tottering economy.

After an opening statement and declaring, "This isn't about me, it's about you," Obama took up a microphone and strolled the ornate East Room, playing to an audience of 100 invited guests and what the White House said were an estimated 67,000 people watching him in cyberspace.

WATCH FULL VIDEO:

The event capped a concerted Obama recent public relations foray in support of his young administration's assault on the country's twin crises in the economy and financial system, including two in-person town hall meetings in California and an appearance on Jay Leno's "Tonight Show." On Tuesday Obama held a nationally televised news conference, also in the East Room, calling on an unusual mix of reporters in an apparent attempt to shake up the focus of questioning.

Obama explained he had called the first-of-its-kind online town hall meeting as an "an important step" toward creating a broader avenue for information about his administration. Spokesman Robert Gibbs said there would be more such events.

Timing, of course, was key. Obama was beamed out through cyberspace a day after the House Budget Committee adopted a spending and revenue plan that broadly matched his massive $3.6 trillion outline even while seeking to reel back on deficit projections.

In a forum that gave him an essentially passive audience, Obama said the budget would put the country on a path to "a recovery that will be measured by whether it lasts, whether it endures; by whether we build our economy on a solid foundation instead of an overheated housing market or maxed-out credit cards or the sleight of hand on Wall Street; whether we build an economy in which prosperity is broadly shared."

Obama's Republican opposition _ which he pointedly did not mention Thursday _ has fought his budget proposal, broadly declaring it a spending recipe for national bankruptcy.

Not surprisingly, the Internet questioning dovetailed with the president's key projects: universal health care, improved education, energy independence and the range of promises made in the White House campaign.

At times flashing his broad smile and at others determined and serious, Obama drew on his own experiences with the American health care system to empathize with one questioner who supported his goal of universal coverage.

He threw bouquets of praise to nurses who helped the family when his daughter Sasha was stricken with meningitis and returned with vigor to a recounting of the experience of watching his fatally ill mother argue with an insurance company to pay what it owed her for ovarian cancer treatment.

In a lighter moment, Obama noted there had been heavy support for a question about legalizing marijuana as a means of boosting the economy and creating jobs.

"The answer is, no, I don't think that is a good strategy to grow our economy," he quipped. The in-house audience tittered.

The president did not make news, but ran smoothly through answers to questions posed to him on the White House Web site and chosen according to rankings by respondents. A moderator read Obama some of the questions and other questions were displayed on monitors in the room.

And with more than 100,000 questions submitted for the forum, it gave the administration a significant number of e-mail addresses for future outreach and the next campaign.

The economy dominated, allowing Obama to sell his agenda for putting the country on a sounder footing in the midst of the worst economic downturn in decades and a financial crisis unmatched since the 1930s.

One questioner asked why the U.S. did not adopt a European-style government-sponsored health care system.

Because, Obama responded, he believed the best way forward was to build on the current system that relies heavily on employer plans rather than scrap what has existed for generations and largely has met the need of a majority of Americans.

Nevertheless, he said, any overhaul must cope with the country's institutions that aren't easily transformed, specifically pointing to Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the millions of Americans who are uninsured.

Detroit automakers, he said, must evolve or face extinction. He promised more help to the struggling industry but demanded a new way of doing business.

"A lot of it's going to depend on their (the auto industry's) willingness to make some pretty drastic changes. And some of those are still going to be painful," he said.

As reflected in the Internet questioning, housing was near the top of American concerns, prompting Obama to urge mortgage refinancing for the 40 percent of American homeowners that he said were eligible under his programs. Mortgage rates have hit record lows.

Obama appeared off balance only once, in an exchange with Bonnee Breese, a Philadelphia high school teacher in the East Room audience who questioned the president about charter schools and his efforts to improve the national teaching corps.

"OK, so you've been teaching for 15 years," Obama said at one point, directly addressing Breese and laughing. "I'll bet you'll admit that during those 15 years there have been a couple of teachers that you've met _ you don't have to say their names _ who you would not put your child in their classroom. See? Right? You're not saying anything. You're taking the Fifth."

Obama was clearly teasing Breese, who turned her head away, seemingly in embarrassment or disagreement.

I respect Obama he is a talented politician, President Obama seems to posse’s insightful, reasonable judgment on many issues, although in the case of marijuana prohibition laws I find Obama’s choice to answer with mocking humor to be lacking. Smoking marijuana is an easy thing to laugh about, it seems there is something about being stoned that brings a smile to people’s faces, however marijuana prohibition is not a joke. We should not be making jokes as millions of Americans are arrested for being caught on the wrong side of moral politicking, we should not laugh as we spend over 30 billion dollars a year going after Americans for smoking weed, we should not giggle and poke fun as we watch billions of dollars in tax revenue slip through our fingers each year, and should we not be jolly as thousands of people are murdered by cartels profiting from America’s moral hypocrisy. I believe there are profound latent consequences in prohibition that are not even factored in to our assessments of the effects of illegality, such as how we view the rule of law and the role of law enforcement in the community, the divisiveness between users and non users, the stigma of mental shock of incarceration. I say pot prohibition is no joke it has real costs paid for in real lives. Freedom is achievedy by placing responsibility in the hands of the citizen and not by the state legally enforcing morality.

I listened to President Obama and I have to say I was very disappointed. I completely disagree with the premise that we shouldn't go to a single payer health insurance plan. That's a bunch of bs.
Every single time the American population is asked to submit questions to the President the number one concern is health care. I thought this was suppose to be a Democracy. Well prove it.
Bottom line if Canada can do it we can do it. President Obama is blowing it on health care.

The bottom line is that Obama's economic plan is bad. It is spending too much - much on frivolous things, such as the 5.6 billion dollar volunteer program - during any type of economic situation, even if it were the best of times. When we're going through a catastrophic recession where there's no end in sight, it is pure insanity. Proven socialistic European leaders are telling the US to get a grip along these lines, and that's just plain laughable.

Obama is a novice when it comes to economics, especially his close-minded belief that capitalism is bad and must be replaced by a nationalized system wherein wealth is redistributed.

No, my friend. He's gonna raise taxes on the wealthy (who've been getting a free ride for the last eight years). That is _not_ "redistributing the wealth" or "socialism" or "communism" or whatever ISM) -- it's FAIRNESS.

And the idea that we should listen to any Repub about how to fix the economy is laughable -- YOU'RE THE CHUCKLEHEADS WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS!

Perhaps she turned away because she is one of the bad teachers!
I see nothing wrong with the way he responded, it is an issue that many teachers and administrators don't want to deal with. Everyone has a responsibility for the poor state of our schools and education system, it is not just about the money or parents, it is everyone involved who has part responsibility for this problem. Parents, teachers, administrators, the communities, and the lack of real interest from our governments to make outstanding education a top priority throughout the country. And yes, there are many very bad teachers, I have met many, and quite honestly they have no business teaching our children. The good teachers should not be worried about having to meet performance standards set by our new President, the bad teachers are the ones who should worry, and are the ones who are now complaining.

I am sick to hear him disparage the teachers, it just is not valuable at this time. We all know people in EVERY occupation who you wonder about, but that part of the beauty of it all...WE ARE ALL UNIQUE...

If Obama is serious about respecting nurses, he should sign the UNION BILL.. There are millions of nurses in this country who would go back to work when they get a fair shake...In Seattle the union got us a 10% differential for evenings and 15% for nights and premiums for weekends and holidays...The rest of the country runs their hospitals like PLANTATIONS and say SUCK IT UP.... Disastrous and that is why nurses die driving home at 7 in the morning after working a 12 hour shift...

He is not "disparaging the teachers", he is being critical of the bad teachers that continue to perpetuate the severe problems we have with our educational system. He has acknowledged that not all teachers are poor teachers. He knows there are many many very good and dedicated teachers, that is why he has constantly spoken about the need to increase teacher compensation, he believes very strongly that good teachers are not paid what they are worth. But he also has to look at the problems in our system, and one of them are the bad teachers who because of seniority or whatever standard are allowed to remain in the schools being bad teachers--hence, hurting not only our children but the system as a whole. Good teachers should also be up in arms about not making the bad teachers more accountable, because the bad teachers make the entire system look bad--good teachers and all. Obama is trying to increase the standards of our educational system, he can't do that if he dances around problem areas like Bush did, he has to be able to see all areas, the good and the bad, and he does that well.

By the way, there is a HUGE difference between someone who is "unique" as you put it, in their approach to teaching--if their teaching reaches the kids and teaches them what they need to learn, and bad teachers. President Obama is not suggesting that teachers must become automatrons and teach a specific way and in a specified manner. What he is saying is that the bad teachers--those who don't care about their profession, the kids they are assigned to, or that the kids actually learn something--need to either shape up or get out of this profession. He is not obtuse, he knows that the good teachers are the ones who are creative in their classrooms and do many different and unique things to help their students learn--he encourages that.
On the Union Bill, President Obama supports unions and the right to unionize. Right now the Senate is in a battle over the bill, and the moderate Republicans who voted for the bill in the past have stated that they will not vote for it now. You need to call/write your Senators and urge them to support the Employee Free Choice act, rather than complain about President Obama who supports it!

I usually find OBama interesting if increasingly uninspiring, but this town hall was mind numbing and a strain to watch on so many levels. He spun every question into an endless series of soundbites and deferred resolution or doled out blame. It was sad to hear the President trying to sound sincere about education, healthcare reform and a variety of other issues where it is clear he will not have the clout to make significant change. His explanation of the unemployment situation would be laughable if it weren't so dire for so many. "Employment is a trailing indicator" and even when the private sector is convinced our savior, President Obama has restored order and it is safe for commerce to commence again, it could be nineteen more months before we see more jobs. This is a major back peddle from how he suggested we judge his administration (it was on job creation, remember?). Overall, I do not hold out much hope for this administration. If a man who promised so much change can become such a Washington-insider so quickly, what hope is there?

You sound like a bottom feeding troll who is here to criticize. Every poll in the USA is indicating that the poll numbers for his approval are steady. The question of is the economy going in the right direction reached the highest it has been since the summer of 2007. If you find yourself in the bottom percentage, you may look in the mirror instead of saying there is something wrong with the majority. President Obama is doing exactly what he told us he was going to do. We voted for him. His is living up to his promises. Now for those of you who wanted McSame, you lost. Live with it.

You are being way to critical and unrealistic in your expecations of President Obama. He is not God, and he cannot perform magic. He is a brilliant human being who was handed a huge mess. Anybody with half a brain can determine that this huge mess Bush created for us will take years for it to be corrected, especially since it is not one single mess, it is a compilation of a whole set of messes, domestically and globally. He has only been on the job since January 20 of this year, that is only two months ago! and you expect him to have solved all the problems of our economy? You are being just a bit too ridiculous! The first step he took was the stimulus package that will create and/or save about 3.5 million jobs, and under the bill (if you bothered reading it) he is very clear that he wants the jobs created fast, he wants the funding to be districuted fast, and he also has specific timelines for specific programs. Nobody knew how bad things were because Bush kept everything secret. Obama's campaign promises were based on what he knew then, now he knows more detail so naturally he needs to adjust his policies to the reality of things, and not the watered down crap Bush fed all of us. Giving up on our President after only 2 months is not only silly but really dumb!

Speaking of Barack Obama: BARACK OBAMA IS AN EXCELLENT PRESIDENT!

Obama is a racial-minority individual and does not like racism:

I know it may be hard to believe.

However, it is absolutely true that Ronald W. Reagan committed horrible, racist, hate crimes during his presidency.

A lot of people know about Reagan's infamy.

And a lot of people will know about Reagan's infamy--even until the end of human existence: they'll find out.

Numbers 32:23: "Be sure your sins will find you out."

I don't think he answered the question sufficiently regarding reforming health care. You can't reform healthcare if you get input from insurance carriers, all you get it more of the same b.s. we've had the million years or so. (milion years an exaggeration but you get the point) He was very vague about healthcare and I'm not too happy right now. He needs to get it overhauled completely or just forget about it. The health insurance industry should have no sayso whatsoever on what should happen and it ticks me off that they do. I sure hope I'm wrong but somehow I don't so.

He has appointed a task force of over one hundred people to make suggetions on what it should look like. If he answered you he would be winging it. This president doesn't wing it. He tries to know what he is talking about. He told you the principles he told the group he wants. If you only look for negatives, you can always find something.

Why don't you call or write to him, he does listen to our opinions. You also need to understand that he cannot perform magic, even on our very broken healthcare system, in a short period of time. Overhauling it completely is unrealistic given our political system. The GOP and insurance industry is going to fight him tooth and nail all the way. He needs to walk this path carefully to make sure changes beging to happen, even if they come slower than we wish. We have one of the most convoluted, complicated and expensive broken health care systems in the world, it is going to take some time for him or anyone to be able to completely turn it around. Although I have not always been in agreement with all his moves, I do trust him, his ability, intelligence and integrity, and I trust that he will at least begin the ball rolling in a significant way--and we never know, he might just be able to beat down his nasty opponents and get a comprehensive reform enacted before the end of his second term.

What most media and wingers do not understand is that the president realizes the corporate media tries to control the discussion. I have complained for years the media does not provide a good forum for we the people. This president promised to represent we the people. He has found forums to do just that with the internet and with townhall meetings. The wingers and media are all knocking it while they are four steps behind. McSame did the same thing overlooking the power of communication. The wingers are still in the twentieth century while the president is in the twenty first century. Wingers have a difficult time with change and progress. It will be too late when they catch on.
