Boston Herald Cuts 25 Jobs
BOSTON — The Boston Herald has laid off 25 workers, or 6 percent of its staff, because of slumping sales and advertising revenues as well as the deepening economic recession.
The tabloid newspaper, with an average weekday circulation of 167,500, announced the job cuts Friday. The announcement came a day after the 100-year-old, Boston-based Christian Science Monitor published its last daily print edition and reinvented itself as a publisher of a spruced-up weekly, a subscription e-mail newsletter and a Web-only daily paper.
Most of the eliminated Boston Herald positions were related to business operations. The newsroom was largely untouched, except for one photographer who took a voluntary buyout.
Publisher Patrick Purcell said the layoffs came after efforts to trim costs failed to keep pace with slumping revenues.
