BOSTON — The Boston Herald has laid off 25 workers, or 6 percent of its staff, because of slumping sales and advertising revenues as well as the deepening economic recession.

The tabloid newspaper, with an average weekday circulation of 167,500, announced the job cuts Friday. The announcement came a day after the 100-year-old, Boston-based Christian Science Monitor published its last daily print edition and reinvented itself as a publisher of a spruced-up weekly, a subscription e-mail newsletter and a Web-only daily paper.

Most of the eliminated Boston Herald positions were related to business operations. The newsroom was largely untouched, except for one photographer who took a voluntary buyout.

Publisher Patrick Purcell said the layoffs came after efforts to trim costs failed to keep pace with slumping revenues.

Big business has bought up all the TV news so we don't get any reliable news on TV and they have been buying up newspapers and cutting the local news and getting rid of the things that people buy a newspaper for. I think they really want to get rid of newspaper journalists so they can totally control the Corporate message.
Are any papers outside of the U.S. failing? I haven't heard of any.

The Herald has been a great watchdog for a great city for a very long time. Here's to hoping that it survives.

The Boston Herald - a conservative barge barely afloat in an ocean of Massachusetts progressivity.

I used to read the Herald's online Boston sports coverage until the day last fall when the paper announced its choice for president - hold the presses - John McCain!

So I sent them an email saying "bad choice - not the man for the job" and telling 'em I would get my sports news elsewhere. Haven't seen a Herald since then.

The decline of the newspapers may be a serious matter. Their reportage is a big part of news on the web. It seems ironic since just a couple years ago, newspapers were demanding a 15-25% profit and shrinking the newsroom accordingly. Broadcasting, too, has long enjoyed a healthy profit margin. Times change (and take loans for ordinary operating expenses from Mexican billionaires).

The world will be a better place when the Boston Herald is gone. Good riddance. A terrible newspaper. They really ruined the quality of reporting in Boston.

The Herald has been laying employees off for several years.

Unlike you, I still find 25 Americans jobless, deplorable.
It all adds up.
