CHICAGO — The lights are going down from the Great Pyramids to the Acropolis, the Eiffel Tower to Sears Tower, as more than 2,800 municipalities in 84 countries plan Saturday to mark the second worldwide Earth Hour.

McDonald's will even soften the yellow glow from some Golden Arches as part of the time zone-by-time zone plan to dim nonessential lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to highlight global climate change.

"Earth Hour makes a powerful statement that the world is going to solve this problem," said Carter Roberts, chief executive of the World Wildlife Fund, which sponsors Earth Hour. "Everyone is realizing the enormous effect that climate change will have on them."

Seven times more municipalities have signed on since last year's Earth Hour, which drew participation from 400 cities after Sydney, Australia held a solo event in 2007. Interest has spiked ahead of planned negotiations on a new global warming treaty in Copenhagen, Denmark this December. The last global accord, the Kyoto Protocol, is set to expire in 2012.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon encouraged the convention to reach a fair and effective climate change agreement and promoted Earth Hour participation in a video posted this month on the event's YouTube channel.

"Earth Hour is a way for the citizens of the world to send a clear message," Ban said. "They want action on climate change."

Other videos have been posted by celebrities such as rocker Pete Wentz and actor Kevin Bacon and WWF has offered Earth Hour iPhone applications. Search engine Yahoo! says there's been a 344 percent increase in "Earth Hour" searches this February and March compared with last year.

New studies increasingly highlight the ongoing effects of climate change, said Richard Moss, a member of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and WWF's climate change vice president.

"We have satellites and we have ships out at sea and we have monitoring stations set up on buoys in the ocean," Moss said. "We monitor all kinds of things people wouldn't even think about. The scientific research is showing in all kinds of ways that the climate crisis is worsening."

But not everyone agrees and at least one counter-protest is planned for Saturday.

Suburban Philadelphia ice cream shop owner Bob Gerenser, 56, believes global warming is based on faulty science and calls Earth Hour "nonsense."

The resident of New Hope, Pa., and owner of Gerenser's Exotic Ice Cream planned to illuminate his store with extra theatrical lighting.

"I'm going to get everyone I know in my neighborhood to turn on every light they possibly can to waste as much electricity as possible to underline the absurdity of this action ... by being absurd," he said.

Earth Hour 2009 has garnered support from global corporations, nonprofit groups, schools, scientists and celebrities _ including Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett and the Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

McDonald's Corp. plans to dim its arches at 500 locations around the Midwest. The Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Fairmont hotel chains and Coca-Cola Co. also plan to participate.

Nearly 200 U.S. cities, towns and villages have signed on, from New York City _ which will darken the iconic Empire State Building and Broadway marquees _ to Igiugig, population 53 on Iliamna Lake in southwestern Alaska.

Among the efforts in Chicago, 50,000 light bulbs at tourist hotspot Navy Pier will dim and 24 spotlights that shine on Sears Tower's twin spires will go dark.

"We're the most visible building in the city," said Angela Burnett, a Sears Tower property manager. "Turning off the lights for one hour on a Saturday night shows our commitment to sustainability."

The Commonwealth Edison utility said electricity demand fell by 5 percent in Chicago and northern Illinois during last year's Earth Hour, reducing about 840,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.

"It goes way beyond turning off the lights," said Roberts of the WWF. "The message we want people to take away is that it is within our power to solve this problem. People can take positive constructive actions."

Ha, ha, we won!

Turn it off or on for an hour, you did it consciously and mass consciousness was reached, ha ha ha!

The new paradigm is ushering in and mere humans are at the mercy of nature, human nature.

I'll bet suburban Philadelphia ice cream shop owner Bob Gerenser may not be selling so much ice cream in the next few weeks after his stupid, irresponsible actions & statements. Get with the program, Bob. Science HAS weighed in & the climate IS changing, whether you want to believe it or not.

Besides all that, what harm does it do to turn off the lights for ONE stinking hour?? I grew up hearing my mother tell me all the time to turn off lights we weren't using. That's because she grew up during the great depression. Sort of like what we have now...

House Bill HR875 S425 is an outrageous travesty of justice. It will outlaw organic farming as we know it, including growing food for your own use in your own backyard. It's backed by some serious money from Monsanto, who want everyone to use their seedless, genetically engineered products. Please please vote against it and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

actually there is some evidence showing that when night lights are dimmed criminal activity can drops because the criminals can't see in the dark either....

I am all for conserving energy, but I sat in the dark for three days this winter and I think I fulfilled my personal quota.

Now, we all need good night lighting. We need it to light our streets somewhat, turnpike exits and parking lots. We really don't need it for a lot more...for example...advertising for stores at 2 am when those stores, mall etc closed hours before.

Some lighting we can turn off because it is not necessary.

Other night lighting we can change by using full cutoff fixtures such as below:

http://www.selene-ny.org/downloads/lightfixtures.pdf

And here is the kicker:

When good lighting fixtures replace bad ones, the bulb wattage can be lowered without sacrificing illumination because the light is directed down toward the ground, where it is needed and not into the sky or horizontally into your eyes causing light pollution and glare..

Let me say this again...

Using good lighting fixtures SAVES MONEY!
And during these times of financial crisis, that's something that no one can disregard.

I leave you now with a few links that will further my argument:

I think we can all agree that new equipment is more efficient than older equipment.

Make the argument based on ROI!

Energy saving bulbs are only as good as you wiring. In my building wiring is so outdated I have to change bulbs every month. I have stopped buying expensive ones because I am throwing my money away.

Do you really think the power plants are going to take units offline for an hour, get real this will just cause an major voltage spike across the power grid which could result in an blackout. So might be more than an hour so goodluck.

This may cause outages from the power spike.

That will hurt the cause.

I would recommend something more constructive, like help people find the sources for rooftop solar, some of which are free to install and immediately decreasing your electric bill.

The outage will be caused if anything when people turn their switches on again after this event. Of course the power systems see this kind of activity everyday when people return from work and turn their AC's on.

Remember that the transmission system is a huge inductor carrying huge amounts of Current.

When you interrupt the current flow, you get a voltage spike radiating on from the current reduction points. dV=dI/dT

The worst offenders in energy usage are many times those that argue the most for conservation. Local, State and Federal governments are certainly in this category.

I think most normal Americans believe in conservation but are turned off by the shrillness and hatred of the green movement. ie "flat earthers"

Like conservatives driving on public roads...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:55 PM on 03/27/2009

I love this argument. Because I don't like to pay tons of taxes for unnecessary spending, I should not be permitted to drive on a road? I pay plenty of taxes to the local, state and federal governments. Yet, I:

Do not qualify for housing assistance
Do not qualify for food/nutrition assistance
Am not receiving unemployment or welfare
Have used the public court system twice, and I paid for costs
Have a daughter who does not qualify for a hot lunch program
Have a daughter who does not go to public school
Have used the public library once in 7 years
Have had the police repond to a call once since I started to own a home (5 years)
Pay for my own insurance (home, health and auto)
Did not qualify for a governtment assistance loan to but a home
Paid for a replacement of a water main connection that was the responsibility of the county, per a court finding

Please explain to me, then, why are you quibbling about me driving on a public road?

The worst offenders are those who have outdoor lighting on all hours of the night...

Like a Mall or Store with Parking Lot lights on at

3 am....

long after the 9:00 or 9:30 pm closing time.

Next arguing point is security...and I've worked in that field...best security lights would be
to use motion sensors...lights go on when they detect motion.

In my city 60% of the electricity is used by factories, the local college and hospital and the 24 hour big box stores. The local government office is in the downtown business area that uses just 10% of electricity for the offices and stores combined. I think you are just making stuff up.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:39 PM on 03/27/2009

We had rolling blackouts in 2001 and again in 2005 with occasional issues since. Conservation has been all the rage since then. The local news station did a great piece on showing the local, county and state offices in the area with all of their lights on in the outside and on mst of the internal floors in the evening, as well as constant burning lights on during the day. All the while, asking the rest of us to conserve.

Our city council has offices that are perfectly fine and have been remodeled and retrofitted within the last 6 years. Yet, they are getting a new building near the 5 and 8 intersection that is not as energy efficient as the old building.

The federal courthouse in our area has flood lighting all around the building's exterior that are on from 5:30 pm-6:30 am, including the front steps which face a major street and have lighting on in the courtyard in the center of the building.

I could go on and on.

The only reason I would not want to waste electricity is because my electric bill would be higher. However, in honor of earth hour, I'm willing to make an exception and waste as much electricity as possible.
