I clicked the link above to check out the Mos' Def / Hitchens exchange as my curiosity was piqued by several of the comments here. Glad I did because a lesson that I've already learned but apparently needed to learn again was reinforced--never listen to/believe other peoples' opinions and summaries, ESPECIALLY when the opinions are white peoples' thoughts on Black people.

Based on the comments I expected Mos' Def to sound less than informed. My assumption was wrong and, as ususal, you guys were totally off in your assessment. Granted, his voice may be somewhat grating, but his points, questions, and perspectives were valid and spot on! Hitchens, however, tried to denigrate Mos' Def as an ill-informed, stupid panelist, when, in fact, Mos' Def was simply asking a question to increase his awareness, sharing his experience, and providing a reason that supports his point of view.

Mos' Def was NOT AT ALL saying that he didn't know who al Queda or Bin Laden are. He was simply asking what exactly is their political agenda and when/where have they expressed it (presumably because he'd like to read/research it for himself as the media is certainly not to be trusted). He then gave the example of the woman living in hiding, accused of having committed an act for which she maintains her innocence, and followed up by making the point that in the Black community, this occurs more often than it should.

To let you guys tell it, he came off as some ignorant unintelligible person who had no business on the panel.

I'm glad I watched the clip. It showed a different side to Mos' Def and Hitchens as well. I applaud Mos' Def for STANDING HIS GROUND, NOT BACKING DOWN, AND MAKING HIS POINT which, if you approached it with an open mind, would not have escaped you. He even managed to drop a little education on the panelists (as Maher and Hitchens readily admitted they had no idea of the woman referenced in Mos' Def's analogy).

A little tip for you posters -- stop trying to lump Black artists and, indeed, Black people as a whole into the category of STUPID, INARTICULATE, AND UNINFORMED. We show you each and every day just how wrong you are. Its just unfortunate that you are so entrenched in your beliefs that you can't see beyond them to expand your minds. Typical. . .
