MILTON, Mass. — A man fatally stabbed his 17-year-old sister, decapitated his 5-year-old sister in front of a police officer and then turned toward his 9-year-old sister with a knife in his hand before officers shot him dead in what their chief described as "a killing field."

There was no clear motive for the events that unfolded Saturday, the day after the 5-year-old's birthday, in a tony Boston suburb that also is home to Gov. Deval Patrick. But there was no doubt about the carnage wrought by 23-year-old Kerby Revelus against his sisters in the two-family home they shared with their parents and grandmother.

Five-year-old Bianca was killed as a cake for her birthday, which investigators believe was Friday, sat on the kitchen table. Nine-year-old Sarafina dialed 911 and watched police shoot her brother as her elder sister, 17-year-old Samantha, lay dead on the floor.

Sarafina was hospitalized Sunday with defensive wounds to her hands and stab wounds in her abdomen and one of her legs, police said.

"In policing, we see the raw human emotion every day, but to think that a human being could afflict such an atrocious, violent act on his own family is unbelievable," Milton police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr. said. "When I walked up to the first officer (on the scene), I could see the whole story right in his face. This just told me that this was something very bad."

Saturday's attack came about 24 hours after Revelus had gotten into a fistfight with a man living next door, Wells said.

"Blows were exchanged," he said. "I don't know the cause of it, but we're confident that did happen. He had been agitated in the hours that followed that, going into the day and last night."

Investigators believe Revelus targeted Samantha, a senior at Milton High School, and fatally stabbed her with a household knife while their grandmother, who neighbors say lives on the first floor, was doing laundry in the basement. The children's parents were away; their mother, identified by friends as Regine Revelus, is a nurse at a Boston hospital, Wells said.

Sarafina, a student at the Tucker Elementary School, just behind the house, called 911 around 5 p.m. An officer on patrol in the neighborhood arrived within a minute, Wells said, and could hear an altercation inside as he reached the second floor. The 911 operator tried to persuade Sarafina to open the door, but when she didn't the officer broke through.

"As the officer entered the door, (Revelus) decapitated (Bianca) in front of him," Wells said. "He actually walked into a killing field. He walked into such carnage, as far as the atrocity of it, I've never seen it."

Within moments, four officers were inside and two of them shot Revelus as he tried to get to Sarafina, Wells said. Revelus fell, still clutching the knife.

Details about the number of shots and who killed Revelus were pending the outcome of an autopsy Sunday.

Revelus had recently served jail time on a gun charge, Wells said, but the details would not be released until courts opened Monday. Neighbors said Revelus was in a car that was pulled over by police and from which one occupant threw a gun into a sewer.

Police had been called to the family's house in 2004 after a domestic violence report that Revelus had punched a woman living there, Wells said.

A neighbor, Norm Walsh, said his daughter Kate Walsh, a Hollis, N.H., police officer, reported hearing two shots as she went outside to bring in groceries from the family car. Moments later, a blood-covered officer emerged carrying Sarafina, seeking towels to stanch her bleeding.

"It's shocking to me," said Norm Walsh, whose son is the same age as Revelus. "He played a lot of pickup hoop in the driveway."

Walsh said the family members had lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years and were warm. They were of Haitian descent, as are many residents in the neighborhood, where Creole is spoken alongside English.

"The family is a solid family. Both parents worked; good kids. Completely makes no sense," Walsh said.

Samantha's classmates referred to her by her nickname, Princess, and remarked at her grace, class and friendliness. She had been one of about 20 students who had been at the high school Saturday afternoon to rehearse for a poetry jam on Thursday. Saturday morning, Samantha also had practiced for a school fashion show.

"She had a stage presence like you couldn't believe," classmate Kassi Stein said.

Sobbing, she added: "She had just a soft voice and everyone would lean in to hear what she was saying."

In one of the poems Samantha was to recite, "Acquaintance," she wrote of the strength of women in the face of "ignorant souls."

The poem closed, "So what lousy wind brought you here? What values you offer? She's a woman, a queen, a goddess. Don't treat her like any other."

A two-hour grief counseling session was held at the school Sunday afternoon and will be offered Monday to students and employees.

The officers involved in the case were placed on administrative leave and were receiving counseling from the Boston Police Department.

First, pmagellan: As a woman, a teacher and a parent, I can PROMISE you that there is not an institution in this country (or world, as far as I know) that teaches girls they are superior to boys. In fact, sadly, the opposite is frequently still true, even in the most "progressive" environments. Check out Mary Gordon's Good Boys and Dead Girls -- there is, it seems, always a reason to passively excuse male violence against women: he felt overlooked, he was rebuffed, he was insecure, he was upset...the litany is endless.

The other part of this story that keeps haunting me: the policeman watched as the girl was held down and decapitated in front of him.

Watched? It takes a while to mortally wound someone with a kitchen knife -- did he just freeze?? I'm not looking to assign blame, I'm just sick that the children couldn't have been saved. And I guess tryin to imagine how they could have been.

Sometimes I just wish I could send a note down to the Devil and say..."Pack in Dude, there isn't anything you can do to us that we don't already do to each other!"

That actually is commented on in Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett's book "Good Omens." One of the main characters is an Earth wandering demon who is always impressed at how humans come up with far worse things to do to eachother than Hell ever did.

I believe we make our own hell. The tragedy is when we inflict it on others.

So very sad the parents did not see the signs and the Juvenile and Criminal Justice Depts missed them also. This man was obviously mentally ill. He was charged w/ assault for punching another sister in the face over a phone bill years ago, was in jail for 9 months, involved in fighting and was charged with possession of a gun. Prior to the murders of his two sisters, he had been in a fight and remained "agitated." Everyone needs to recognize mental illness and seek help asap. So sad this family did not have the professional guidance and support needed to prevent such a devastating tragedy.

Was he taking anti-depressants or anti-psychotic medication?
Bi-polar disorder may be the underlying cause?
Maybe undiagnosed mental illness?

When I think of the horror that filled the final moments of those kids lives...

I think this proves there is just an evil in this world.

Comments say they cannot understand how this could come about. So I decided to share what my intuition tells me. Please understand I'm not explaining it, just trying to understand it.

I'm a male raised by women. You could say that I'm aware, and try to embody the best, of the masculine and feminine. I see the male and female as both biological and social constructs. My experience in America tells me that in the rush to empower the "feminine" we've confused the feminine with the "female".

The social focus on women/girls over men/boys, informs me that we are telling women they are superior to, or more important than, man. Instead, we should be telling both sexes to honor and balance feminine traits, such as compassion and nurturing, with masculine traits, such as courage and forcefulness. Earth and the whole world of form splits along the lines of feminine/masculine, not female/male. We need goddesses as much as we need gods. What we need is awareness, balance and integration.

In this context, I point to three elements of this story:
- the poem of Samantha, the Princess: "She's a woman, a queen, a goddess."
- the killer was a boy from an ethnic background where man are seen/treated as superior;
- the killer was the male sibling, the targets were the female siblings.

My heart goes out to their family and all those touched by this story of ours.

I've been on this planet a good while and I have yet to see any favoritism toward women. That may not matter, since he may have imaginned something just based on being outnumbered. I saw that when I taught a class that vastly outnumbered the male students. They were aggressive and sat together, esp. to me (I taught the class), but when they wrote their final papers, they were all quick to claim how outnumbered and victimized they were. It was bunk. Maybe men have yet to "get over" being in a more competitive environment with women. If you ask me, it's still a man's world, though, and men are quite hostile when it isn't exactly that.

And what would your understanding be if there were all boys in the family, and he killed two of his brothers?

I don't know why I do this to myself. I wish I had never read this story, it has upset me the entire day. I was trying to see if I could find pictures of the girls and found a site that has pictures of the events of that horrific day as well as family members and the brother. Seeing that last picture when the mother had just found out is just too overwhelming.

How do you decapitate someone with a "kitchen knife" while a policeman is witnessing the act?

A guillotine or sword would be swift. . . but a kitchen knife?

My question exactly. Normally I shy away from articles like this, but I kept looking for the answer to this question. This whole thing is bizarre and I would have to point to some kind of mental illness or roid rage to explain it. This is so sad and horrific at the same time.

Well it seemed from the article that the girl was being decapitated AS the policeman entered the home, so it may have taken a minute and the cop (poor guy) just walked in on the end of it and was too late to stop it.

What I don't understand is that time after time, we hear of these horrendous crimes that are executed by what seems to be otherwise normal individuals and still refuse to accept that demons do exist and operate through human beings. We witness evil at it's worse and just shrug our shoulders and say, "he just snapped"! This is abnormal, inhumane behavior of another kind!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:47 PM on 03/30/2009

Because human beings are never just inhumane by themselves, right? I really hate this "blame the evil unseen outside force". Rather than reflect inside ourselves and the ills inherent in human beings brought on by their experiences and the society they live in, we just write it off as something "evil" and foreign to us. Because then it's easier to disconnect, not learn, and repeat the same mistake again.

No offense to you personally, but this behavior, as atrocious as it is, is not abnormal for human beings. Look at the carnage brought on by religious wars, the human beings trampled and forgotten in the dust in the race to prove the might of nations. Heck, if you are Christian (I'm assuming that you are) just read over your own Old Testament to find out how human beings treat each other (and justify it as God's will).

And in my experience, very rarely do people "just snap". Most of the times they have lived lives of repressed pain and the outside world only becomes aware of it when they "snap".

I don't know what this young man's story is and do not pretend to understand his family dynamics, but obviously, something was there that caused him to do this. I hope more details are forthcoming and I pray for the remaining family's strength in this tragic time. In the mean time, let's not point fingers at shadows in hopes that we'll feel safe in our own little worlds.

Jesus Christ! Stuff like this is only supposed to happen on The X-Files and Supernatural, on TV shows where demonic possession is real. Not in real life.

Never in my life have I ever wanted to UNREAD something so bad.

I know what you mean. I live in Boston so this story has been all over the news. I keep thinking about the cop who saw it (probably because I have family in the Boston PD). I mean, obviously what the family is going through is indescribable, that goes without saying.

But that poor cop. He's going to need some serious time off and extensive mental counseling.
