Gay Rights:

It's no secret that LGBT life in Iraq these days is as dangerous as it gets - quite possibly the most dangerous in the world. Secret underground networks have emerged to help escort LGBT Iraqis out of the country. Since the fall of Saddam Hussein (no friend to LGBT rights himself), the safety situation for LGBT Iraqi citizens has become even dire. And there's concern this week that the Iraqi government is going to start executing LGBT people.

and women were allowed to study at the universities and were free to go and show their hairs if they wanted to do so. But Saddam was not a "good dictator", he didn't bend in front of Bush like the other in Middle East. Oh, I forgot, Syria has also a bad dictator.

When you have cancer you don't let the tumor suck the resources from your body and give it the chance to spread. You go in there with chemo and attempt to get rid of the sucker.

Ah, the country that gave us the rise of civilization with ancient Babylon and Assryia. The country that formed the heart of culture under the Abbasid Caliphs now slides towards barbarism.

In tombs all over Iraq former rulers roll over in their graves at how low a country can sink

Isn't it great we toppled a tyrant we used to support?
Isn't it great we liberated Iraq and set everyone free?
Isn't it great we brought "our" values to the middle east?
Isn't it great we planted the "seed" of democracy in Iraq?

Gay and women's rights will never be defended by the US in these countries. In many ways, our attitude towards the two are not much different from those in the middle east. We just hide it better.

Bush's proxy war against the gays and lesbians is finally WON!
I guess, neo-cons can scream it out aloud that they have finally won their battle in IRAQ. If they can't kill our LGBT brothers and sisters here in the United States, they win the fight and war by having them killed by proxy in Iraq. Right?

Isn't it ironic that these horrible laws did not exist when that idiot Saddam was President? People were also able to move about freely in their town without being blown up. Bush and Cheney's bloody war has backfired very badly.

This story actually made me sick to my stomach ... I remember seeing the photos of Iran hanging two teen boys for being gay in a public square. I wanted to vomit.... The US must do everything to stop the witch hunts of the gay population in that God awful patch of earth . Is there any chance in hell of such a place that is strangled by religion to leave behind a stone age society and ever move into , at least, the 20th century ???

Sure. We did. We're all nice and civilized now. Clean and shiny. Intellectually superior.

Do not pay attention to the homeless vets under overpasses or the warehousing of the mentally ill in prisons. They mean nothing....literally...to anyone.

Why didn't California think of this. For all the effort invested in denying gays the right to marry they could have denied them the right to live. The majority rules. Right?

The duly elected gov't was elected to follow Sharia law. Why is it a surprise when they do as they were elected to do and maintain the religious beliefs of their nation?

Iraq is obeying its foundational beliefs as decided upon by the citizenry. Palestine is ruled by Sharia law by the elected choice of the people. Iran, Syria, Jordan are all ruled by Sharia law. It is their law and their faith and they can do whatever they want to. If the citizenry decides it no longer wishes to follow Sharia law they will stop. Until then it is their faith and their choice.

Does it seem civilized? Of course it does - to millions upon millions upon millions of people across this planet. Is it our version of civilized? No. Is our version of civilized more correct? No. But since it is ours we do tend to believe it is not only the right version but it is the only version.

Civilized life sentences in cells 23/1. Civilized 50,000 alcohol related deaths per YEAR in America. Civilized paying/promoting/propping up despots and tyrants. Civilized burnt crosses and murdered abortion doctors. Civilized wounded vets - living beneath an overpass and begging for money. Civilized comatose farmed out to rot in squalid nursing homes.

A nation that allows Henry Kissinger to walk free is not civilized. The world knows it. The time has come for America to shut up and tend to its own barbaric practices.

No man of any moral aptitude will shut up in the face of injustice, wherever it may be! A moral man will stand against injustice within and without his own country, and that is what I would have loved to hear from you, but you are entitled to your opinion. Thank God for those who fought courageously to seek justice where they do not stand a chance to reap any benefit for themselves (such shall be called the children of God).
Your crafted thesis is nothing but a Social Darwinist's viewpoint of the world: It is sickening, and in the least a reckless interpretation of civilization.

Strange, I agree with both of you in some things and none of you in others.

First, we should never again invade a country for regime change or nation-building purposes.
Second, we cannot change the world; we can only change ourselves. Reliant is right in that we choose to judge others when here we t0rture and commit injustices which defy all reason.

We are definitely not in a position to judge. That being said, we should, as individuals, and collectively stand up always with righteous indignation against injustice, never forgetting that we are often no better than anyone else.

Third, let this be a lesson to the world; nothing good is ever gained by the sword. There is always, always a better way to change the world than resorting to vi0lence and aggression.

"Until then it is their faith and their choice"

whom choice? you mean the tyran's choice? because unfortunatly these countries are dictatorships. People are uneducated and terrorised by their religion. Women are oppressed and cannot go to vote. But anyway they would vote for the guy their husbands tell them to vote for.
Remember! In America, a lot of people vote along their religion too, sometimes against their own interests!

You should not be ashamed of being anything. You are an Arab, and to God be the glory. However, what should make anyone feel ashamed, Arab or non-arab, is keeping quiet, therefore subscribing to keeping the status quo. Speak up against this injustice any way you can, and God will bless you for it.
