Pittsburgh Police Shooting Had Origins In Urinating Dog

Pittsburgh Shooting

PITTSBURGH — A 911 call that brought two police officers to a home where they were ambushed, and where a third was also later killed during a four-hour siege, was precipitated by a fight between the gunman and his mother over a dog urinating in the house.

The Saturday argument between Margaret and Richard Poplawski escalated to the point that she threatened to kick him out and she called police to do it, according to a 12-page criminal complaint and affidavit filed late Saturday.

When officers Paul Sciullo II and Stephen Mayhle arrived, Margaret Poplawski opened the door and told them to come in and take her 23-year-old son, apparently unaware he was standing behind her with a rifle, the affidavit said. Hearing gunshots, she spun around to see her son with the gun and ran to the basement.

"What the hell have you done?" she shouted.

The mother told police her son had been stockpiling guns and ammunition "because he believed that as a result of economic collapse, the police were no longer able to protect society," the affidavit said.

Friends have said Poplawski was concerned about his weapons being seized during Barack Obama's presidency, and friends said he owned several handguns and an AK-47 assault rifle. Police have not said, specifically, what weapons were used to kill the officers.

Autopsies show Sciullo, 37, died of wounds to the head and torso. Mayhle, 29, was shot in the head.

A witness awakened by two gunshots told investigators of seeing the gunman standing in the home's front doorway and firing two to three shots into one officer who was already down. Sciullo was later found dead in the home's living room, and Mayhle near the front stoop, police said.

A third officer, Eric Kelly, 41, was killed as he arrived to assist the first two officers. Kelly was in uniform but on his way home when he responded and was gunned down in the street.

Kelly's radio call for help summoned other officers, including a SWAT team. The ensuing standoff included a gun battle in which police say Richard Poplawski tried to kill other officers.

Poplawski is charged with three counts of criminal homicide and nine counts of attempted homicide _ one each for the eight officers who were shot at in an armored SWAT vehicle, plus a ninth who was shot in the hand as he tried to help Kelly.

Poplawski also was charged with possessing an instrument of crime: the bulletproof vest he wore during the gun battle. The criminal complaint doesn't say how Poplawski obtained the vest.

Police Chief Nate Harper Jr. has said the vest kept Poplawski from being more seriously wounded, but police have not specifically said how many shots were stopped by the vest.

A district judge arraigned Poplawski at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, an arraignment court worker told The Associated Press on Sunday. Poplawski was being treated there for gunshot wounds to his extremities and remains under guard. Police and hospital officials have not released his condition, though he is expected to survive.

It was not immediately clear if Poplawski had an attorney. A preliminary hearing, at which Poplawski could challenge the charges, wasn't immediately scheduled.

Poplawski is also charged with firing weapons into two occupied neighboring homes and with recklessly endangering four people, two in each home, with gunfire. No civilians were wounded.

Police did not say why Poplawski fired toward the homes, but some officers were seen going into nearby homes and perching on rooftops.

Investigators continued to work at the home Sunday. A large piece of wood covered the entire entryway, a picture window was shattered, bullet holes could be seen in the living room walls and several bullet marks scarred the facade and window frames.

Police did not immediately release information on funeral arrangements for the officers, though a memorial was held Saturday night outside the police station where all three slain officers worked.

Bagpipers played near a black wreath hung outside the station and an Allegheny County 911 dispatcher did a roll call for the 11 p.m. shift change. Various officers responded when their car numbers were called, but there was silence when the names, unit numbers and badge numbers of the slain officers were called out.

Chief Harper radioed back in each instance that the officer had been killed in the line of duty as hundreds of officers and other mourners stood listening nearby.

(This version CORRECTS name of officer to Paul Sciullo II, not Paul Sciullo III, per new information from police.))

Shouldn't mom have been concerned about the safety of her son and herself if she was going to open the door while he stood behind her with a weapon? This just seems odd, but aside from the danger she put those officers in she also put herself and her kid there as well.

Knowing the police were coming all she had to do was leave the house and alerted them that he was armed. He apparently had time to call his friend and tell him what he was going to do. Mom must have seen him suited up in the body armor.

What she alleging that he was violent or simply wanted him thrown out of the house because the dog peed? It's almost like she helped set the thing up.

I think she is just as nutty as he is.

As a resident of Binghamton NY whose community on Friday had a mass shooting, I personally challenge both the gun control and anti gun control people in HuffPo comments who seem to feel it is appropriate to exploit this tragedy while hiding behind keyboards attempting to gain traction for political causes to do something positive. I ask you to consider donating money to the surviving families of officers killed. There are now surviving families having to pay for funerals and deal with the loss of their loved one. My guess is some deceased officers possibly have surviving children or spouses who potentially face ongoing financial hardship thanks to the violent actions of one man with guns and body armour. Although I don't get the Pittsburgh papers here in NY, I would imagine a legitimate trust fund is probably being set up in the Pittsburgh area to handle donations to surving families. I challenge you to do something good with your computer keyboards today by directly helping these families. Please note I have no financial interest whatsoever in encouraging people to donate to help survivors; I believe it is a kind guesture for those who have means to donate without creating hardship for themselves. My prayers are with those in Pittsburgh suffering as a result of this violence.

Sadly, yes. Two officers had a total of five daughters now without fathers.

Those using this event as a launching point for a gun control discussion are avoiding the real central issue. Does anyone reading this story imagine that this young man is in his right mind?

If any place in the country needs more access to mental health care, then it's western PA. I believe Senator Kerry's wife, who has spent much of her life in Pittsburgh, has been involved in trying to raise awareness of this problem. So much more needs to be done.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that yesterday, Richard Poplawski's mother phoned Post-Gazette Executive Editor David Shribman to complain about the paper's coverage of the story and to threaten a lawsuit. Mrs. Poplawski later told a reporter, "You're going to have the biggest lawsuit in the history of the city of Pittsburgh." Good luck with that.

That kind of sense of entitlement and threatening, plus as the editorial in today's paper said, the sense of rights without any sense of responsibilities ....these must be hereditary if the mother is that far into HER rights. What about the rights of civilized people not to have crazy people kill their law officers? She called the police because the guy's dog peed on her rug (and maybe he threatened her), and she failed to warn the police that the guy was a nut case as well as fully armed with automatic and other kinds of weapons, lots of weapons. What the heck was the paper supposed to say when somebody's kid kills 3 policemen? Where is the killer's father? The mother could have tossed the kid out and had her locks changed. Instead, she makes it everybody's problem.

The city ought to sue this mother, and so should the families of the victims.

this is a sad thing to have happened, but until there is a big grieving police (as opposed to bullying the mourners) presence at the funeral of the next Oscar Grant no special effort should be made to make someone an example for this.

Thomas Jefferson: "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined or determined to commit crimes. Such laws only make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assassins; they serve to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." Perhaps somebody ought to point out to you that Thomas Jefferson lived in an age when weapons had to be hand loaded for a single shot. The police WERE armed, but the killer had an automatic weapon and was wearing protective gear. What would Jefferson say about THAT?

BAN FULL AUTO, and dont sell body armor, to the public. (but truthfully if they took a little longer on background checks, and we could make mental records available to the batf, for background checks when purchasing any fire arm, that would be a start.) but the aclu said that would be a violation of privacy rights.

And don’t buy the White House hype that the USA Patriot Act is a necessary tool to fight terrorism. It is a dangerous law that infringes on the rights of every American citizen and, as one brave aide told President Bush, something that undermines the Constitution of the United States. both parties have a total disregard for the constitution. Time for a 3rd party.

(Bill Clinton)MTV's "Enough is Enough" 4-19-94 "When we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical Constitution with a radical Bill of Rights, giving a radical amount of individual freedom to Americans, it was assumed that the Americans who had that freedom would use it responsibly.... [However, now] there's a lot of irresponsibility. And so a lot of people say there's too much freedom. When personal freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it."

He said he was afraid the police would no longer be able to protect people because of the economy.
So his solution is to ki// as many officers as he could.

These cr@zy wingers only buy weapons in the hopes of using them on anyone they can.
They probably run fantasies through their heads of ki//ing people. It gives them thrills.
They're cr@zy h8ers.

"...By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fear of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the Second Amendment, will ever be an important danger to our Nation, the Amendment remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationship, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important." President John F. Kennedy

"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors." Jefferson.

A militia is no longer necessary since the US happens to have the most powerful army humanity has ever seen. Nice try though, but not very original.

Media: We need two guys on TV yelling at each other to avoid the obvious situation here.

Gun control is the proverbial third rail of American Discourse, it may kill you if you stand up to the NRA; but someone needs to stand up to the NRA lies and I have decided to make an attempt:

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! No NRA outrage over the death of three fine Police Officers in Pittsburgh, PA and the wounding of a fourth by a whack job that was worried about gun control and a dog urinating in the home? The NRA only cares about the sale of guns and ammunition; these sellers give huge sum of money to the NRA and prey upon the unintelligence of many people who just love guns. I will probably get a lot of hate comments from NRA adherents to this post if Huffy allows it to be posted. It is time to stand up to their lies. I own a hand gun for self defense, but assault weapons are military weapons, not hunting weapons and the police in this country will be safer if they are banned. (Waiting for the hate mail now).

People in the states are so worried about terrorist attacks, yet they are not that worried about the second amendment that allowed people to carry a lot of guns. These guns have killed a lot more than any terrorist attack! Some people argue it is good for self safety; but once you carry it, any small fight could turn deadly. In Canada it is almost impossible to buy a gun illegally and tedious to buy it leaglay; but gun crimes are extremely rare!
09:15 AM on 04/06/2009
Eventually, we will all need guns to protect us from the people who have guns. Then we will have to have bigger guns to protect us, and they will get even bigger guns and soon we will all be carrying bazookas when we go to the grocery store. So much for the "freedom" to own guns. We need laws to keep people from crashing into each other at intersections...why not laws about gun ownership?
09:29 AM on 04/06/2009
BAZOOKAS, who sells those? did gander mountain run a sale on those again, da*m i missed it.
09:53 AM on 04/06/2009
You caught me! I don't know a bazooka from a colt 45. Make it about machine guns...and while you think that over, why not look up the word metaphor?

Oh, so there IS a limit to the dangerousness and firepower of a weapon that can be sold to the public. We can't buy bazookas. How in the world did the NRA overlook that?

This is only the beginning...

I ran into this guy at my local post office and he shared red-faced with fury and rage about stockpiling guns, insisting that President Obama was taking their guns away...

He offered to send me links to websites as proof of this and wouldn't be convinced otherwise...

I think that the Limbaugh's, Hannity's and Glenn Becks do this Country a huge and immeasurable disservice and have absolutely no idea how potentially destructive their lies and propaganda fed a certain demographic , are...

Ratings and fat contracts have overtaken responsibility and true patriotism...and we are now wading into extremely dangerous waters-

Contrary to their meme, it is the Limabaugh's, Hannity's and Glenn Beck's and their ilk that will ultimately destroy this country-

One step we can take is to contact the corporations that sponsor Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck et al and tell them that we will no longer buy their products. Another step is to urge our authorities to prosecute for seditious speech, where appropriate.

Go read the criminal complaint on on the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. "Two officer arrive and are shot point blank by a man with a semi-automatic gun. As they lay screaming in pain in the yard a third office arrives is also shot and killed.

Let's all sing "I'm proud to American."

You see, assault weapons are for killing humans in high volumes while initiating or repealing "assaults." In Iraq, the enemy shot at us all the time while we wore body armor, so no, an AK-47 is different than a handgun.

I'm sure the officers babies will understand Richard's need for military weapons.
