NEW YORK — Jack Wrangler, a ruggedly handsome 1970s porn star whose openness about his homosexuality made him a symbol of self-confidence for many gay men, has died. He was 62.

Wrangler died Tuesday in Manhattan from complications of lung disease, said Lewis Tice, director of publicity and marketing for TLA Releasing, a distributor of gay-themed independent films.

His life of sometimes surprising turns _ he found decades-long love with big-band singer Margaret Whiting _ was chronicled in the documentary "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon," released last fall.

"Jack Wrangler knew the power of image-making and inspired an entire generation to be comfortable in their own skin and to become the man of their dreams," said the film's director, Jeffrey Schwarz.

Born John Stillman in Beverly Hills, Calif., the son of TV producer Robert Stillman, Wrangler got his start performing in the religiously themed 1950s NBC series "The Faith of Our Children."

As a young man, he was bartending and go-go dancing in West Hollywood when a role in a San Francisco play sent his career hurtling in a new direction _ under a new last name, borrowed from the label on his plaid work shirt.

His nude scene in the show led to modeling and a string of gay, and later straight, erotic films, where his steely blue eyes, muscled physique, and open-shirted swagger made him a star.

"For me, I felt I needed some true grit in my life, y'know? I felt that I had this formal, white-handkerchief upbringing and that I was not going to survive in the world unless I got down and did something gritty," Wrangler, who appeared in such films as "A Night at the Adonis" and "The Devil in Miss Jones: Part II," told the Palm Beach Post newspaper in a 2005 interview.

Story continues below

His resume grew to include more than 80 adult films, spurring a 1984 autobiography called "The Jack Wrangler Story: What's a Nice Boy Like You Doing?" and a one-man off-Broadway show.

He met Whiting, a big-band era singer whose hits include "That Old Black Magic" and "Moonlight in Vermont," in the 1970s.

Their romance turned tabloid heads: Whiting, who survives him, is 22 years his senior, and Wrangler continued to describe himself as gay.

Nonetheless, Wrangler told the Chicago Tribune in 1985 that the two "see things the same way, comically, professionally and romantically." The pair eventually married.

He got out of porn after meeting Whiting and turned his attention to theater and cabaret, crafting Whiting's cabaret acts and several shows around the legacy of songwriter Johnny Mercer, who had fostered her career.

He was credited with conceiving "Dream," a 1997 Broadway revue of Mercer songs that featured Whiting.

He also created and directed a show pairing Mercer songs with excerpts from "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," John Berendt's best-selling book about a murder in Mercer's hometown of Savannah, Ga.

While recognition of his theater work seldom came without mention of his X-rated past, Wrangler told the Post he had no regrets.

"I was never ashamed of anything I did," he said.

Jack Wrangler was my first porn crush when I was about 20 years old, way back when. He was on 8mm film on a projector with no sound. Didn't know he was still around. He was a real HOTTIE.

My first porn crush was Roger, the original Blueboy model, who made a few films with Wrangler. Their best was probably "Hothouse", but there was also "Sex Magic" and one called "Heavy Equipment" ( in 3D! ) "Straight acting" was a term a lot of gay men wanted to think fit them back then, and Wrangler always seemed to me like someone trying too hard. Roger supposedly was straight, even if he looked like a gay clone. But there was something about him...

So I liked gay porn. So what? Who cares?

I met Jack Stillman in the late 1960's in Santa Barbara. He impressed me because of his charm and looks. His father was a producer or director on Bonanza and they had lots of Emmy's in their living room. Of course then I didn't know he was gay. I was so young I don't even think I knew there was such a thing as being gay. Always remembered him though and found out just a few years ago about the Jack Wrangler persona. That was quite a shocker. I am glad he found happiness with a life partner and sorry to see him pass at such a young age.

An interesting, and very handsome man. May he rest in peace. While I think of 62 as still being too young to die, I can say that he sounds like he lived a full life. My heart still goes out to his friends and family in this time of grief. And one thing I'd like to say about his eventually marrying a woman while still maintaining his being gay.... none of us knows where we'll find our soulmate in life. It seems his soulmate came in the form of a woman and that should be respected.

Margaret Whiting is 20+ years older that Jack Wrangler and they married in 1994. He still said he was gay but that he couldn't compete with other men any longer and preferred to compete with a woman, since that competition came from a different attitude. She's still alive and 85! I can't imagine this hookup but, hey, whatever works for you...

With that hot bod and open attitude, Jack was heaven-sent to delight Gays when there was little to be delighted about. Now he can delight the angels. RIP

His heyday was right before your birth. Check out his films, they're hot and he's fun. Highly charged, beautiful to look at, and no barriers. I'm glad he made it through the AIDS scourge. So few did, and that occurs to me almost every time I watch pre-AIDS porn.

As for his marriage to Margaret, I'm thrilled both of them seemed very happy. The documentary WRANGLER: ANATOMY OF AN ICON is excellent.

I must admit I use to stalk Jack Wrangler. He had a post office box in West Hollywood and I would hang out there sometimes hoping he would pick up his mail and then THIS male.

Never happened. He was a stud among studs.

And he was hot!

Im not trying to gay-bash, but is this really worth BIG NEWS? A porn star is a porn star. The only other mention of a porn star hx ive read on this site had to do with the native american actor who played Billy in Predator trying to start a politcal career and then having his 70's porno brought up against him. This is really pandering to the freakier side of the homosexual community and I find it silly to be on this site.

Well, regardless of his profession, I think the big deal is that he was one of the first people to come out of the closet, and of all places, in a hyper-hormone charged industry like porn.

It is that comfort with sexuality that we, as heterosexuals, posess, so it's easy to understand how important this guy was to gay people. Remember, in those days, being gay was considered to be less than human.

First of all, the story appears under the entertainment heading; as such, it concerns the entertainment industry, a large & diverse category to which adult films, despite, happen to belong. There have been plenty of articles about adult film starts on this website in the past. Of course it's perfectly acceptable to you when it's a story about Stormy Daniels potentially taking on Louisiana senator David Vitter in next round of Repub. primaries.

Millions of heterosexuals in this country enjoy every manner of adult film, but a simple article about the personal life of a gay porn star is pandering to the "freakier side of the homosexual community"? Spare us the phony indignation, please.

if you consider who he was in a cultural context, the impact his life had on others, then he absolutely rates an article. nothing freaky about it, really

As a gay man coming out in the late 70's there wasn't a lot a of avenues to turn to.
He was truly a handsome man, who helped me through some rough times. Thank goodness times have changed. I'm happy to say, that I'm a happy openly gay man who has a great life.

My condolences to his family.

The documentary, "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon" is quite worth seeing. I had only heard of Jack Wrangler as a porn star in straight films, sometime during the 70's. He'd previously been in gay porn for years. He made the transition to straight sex films rather effortlessly, even though the first time he had sex with a woman was on a porno movie set. His long term relationship with 50's pop singer Margaret Whiting is touching. Wrangler never denied that his sexual orientation was anything, but homosexual. I just recently watched the DVD. I'm surprised and saddened to hear of his death.

At that time coming out of the closet must have been very difficult. At that time the harm from smoking was not well known. He is a symbol for not smoking. I never believed anyone in porn, gay or straight could be considered an idol

"At that time the harm from smoking was not well known'. ????

Utter nonsense. The connection between cigarette smoking and cancer has been established for over half a century. I grew up in the 1960's and it was made very clear to us as kids. I have never been tempted to become a smoker because of it.

This is not to suggest Jack deserved what he got, but please get your history correct.

it was not that widely thought at all. Untill the 90s, there were smokoing sections in public places and you could smoke in your office in the 80s and 70s.

Perhaps in your area. Smoking dangers really came to the forefront in the 80s/90s, especially while pregnant. There's a difference between warnings on a package and someone actually educating one about it.

Ever seen Mad Men? People think the smoking in that show is over the top. I grew up in the 60's and believe me the amount of smoking is truly represented in that show.

The link between smoking and lung disease had been noticed by 1915, and the Surgeon General's warning began appearing in 1964. Despite all the knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco, smoking has persisted, and the lion's share of the blame falls at the feet of entertainment figures, like Mr Wrangler, who even today continue to glamorize the deadly habit.

Why the questions about his marriage? Some people fall in love with a person, not a gender. And sometimes sexuality has nothing to do with it. Sometimes it does.
