SYDNEY, Australia - The new cast of "Star Trek" has launched the starship Enterprise on its maiden voyage, with the crew showing a lot of respect for their predecessors.

The 11th big-screen film in the sci-fi series had its world premiere Tuesday at the Sydney Opera House in Australia in advance of its debut in theaters May 8.

Among the stars on hand: Chris Pine, who takes on William Shatner's old role as James Kirk; Zachary Quinto, who inherits Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock; Karl Urban, filling the shoes of DeForest Kelley's Dr. McCoy; and Eric Bana, who plays a villainous Romulan.

Out of admiration for the original Kirk, Pine noted that when he was cast, he wrote Shatner a "letter of introduction and said who I was and what I was doing."

Quinto had a chance to form a personal relationship with Nimoy, who reprises his role as the older Spock. The new Spock said he aims to carve out his own path as the Vulcan scientist with the pointed ears.

"Leonard and I have become very close in this process and his experience has been unique to him and mine will be unique to me," Quinto said.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, "Star Trek" is a prequel to the 1960s TV series and the subsequent movies, relating how Enterprise Capt. Kirk, best buddy Spock and their Enterprise crew mates first came together.

John Cho, who plays Mr. Sulu, said he avoided imitating the performance of his predecessor, George Takei.

"I didn't think it would be wise to do a copy of George Takei's performance," Cho said. "It just didn't seem like the right thing to do, and J.J. didn't ask me to do that, so I avoided it."

One thing about Star Trek was that it had a number of characters that showed inclusiveness of other races. As a minority, only one Asian and nobody else, makes my stomach turn. This is not what its creator envisioned.

Joy Bryant is in it, but she isn't there. They are recreating the original show, I would have liked to see more diversity, but they are staying true to the show. There will be other installments and I believe more diversity.

It seems odd to praise the original show while criticizing the movie when for the most part they both have the same set of characters, meaning the racial diversity really can't be that different from the original.

Okay, but for the time they were the pioneers. Can we advance a little further than that today how many years later?

IF you are still arguing about "Trekker" vs. "Trekkie", then you need to watch Galaxy Quest about a hundred more times, Grasshopper.

The Sidney showing was beat in Austin, Texas at the Alamo Drafthouse with people gathers to see a special version of "Star Trek II:The Warth of Khan" but instead Leonard Nimoy himself WALKS OUT LIVE and introduced the new one.

Word is, it is great. I was working.

Still, I was hoping for one more Next Generation movie. There is no crew like the NCC-1701D crew!

Oh Yes!!! bring it on!! So frustrating, walking past the Opera House yesterday, seeing all the hooplah, and knowing I cant get in .! Then sulking on the way home, muttering about how none of these showponies would be as big a fan as moi!

Looking forward to a new kiss of life in the Star Trek Franchise, lets face it the last movie was pretty ordinary.

It's life Jim but not as we know it.

With Kal Penn going to the White House and John Cho locked into the "Star Trek Kids" franchise, there will be no more Harold and Kumar movies.

It's a good day for the world.

OH, quit complaining... yes, there's women in the movie. Not all the Harry Potter kids could go to their premieres, either. Apparently Ryder and the other gal missed one. BIG DEAL.

I'm an old fan... I watched CST in syndicated reruns with my dad before there was any STTNG, any DS9, any Voyager, or any Enterprise. I was 13 when STTTNG came on, and yes, there were handsome, gorgeous actors and actresses on EACH and every series, so quit it already!

Paramount OWES all of us who liked Enterprise for canceling the show, and I am going to see the movie, and any movie they do, till my feet quit kickin' and I'm buried in a casket six feet under!

Classic Trek was about the issues of the time... you can't appreciate the whole if you don't understand the beginning, and I have no objection to breathing some life into the earlier parts of the story. Obviously they bothered to ASK Mr. Nimoy to participate... THAT says something to me, even if there are others who think it's all about money...

I wanted to be an ASTRONAUT because of this show when I was a kid... I had to settle for a Science Fiction writer, but I will remind all of you that CST made history!

The first interracial kiss broadcast on TV (and didn't get banned) was boldly performed by Shatner and Nichols.

True Trek fans are TREKKERS, not TREKKIES... get it right!

I've been to tons of Cons met almost every star and have about $20,000 worth of autographed collectables, they,we and I call ourselves Trekkies! Trekkers was coined later by people too embarrassed to call themselves Trekkies! Get It Right!

I'm a big fan of the original series, and I have heard some say that the filmmaker plays very fast and loose with the "facts" in this new movie. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to seeing it, and will judge for myself. If nothing else, I will enjoy getting a glimpse of Leonard Nimoy as Spock again!
