Glenn Beck, one of America's most popular television populists, was speaking to his audience on the afternoon of Friday, March 13, during an hourlong special. At this point, he was choking back tears. This was the money shot: the moment that gave the special its title. It was good. "It sounds intimidating, but you know what?" he asked his viewers through the brave snuffles. "Pull away the curtain, and you'll realize that there isn't anybody there."

Not long ago, television news was a no-cry zone. The top newsmen were celebrated for their emotional control in the face of gut-punching developments. War, death, terrorism, plague--nothing rattled their composure. But when it happened, when an anchor couldn't help himself, it mattered.

I saw MSMBC's Morning Jo do a segment on Beck. They admitted they didn't know Beck, nor had they ever seen his show. Then they proceeded to mock, ridicule and rolled around the table, laughing at him. Then they admitted to encouraging Steven Colbert to mock Beck on another network. I was amazed how low MSNBC would go to discredit a competitor. I'm not a Beck fan, but I'll never watch MSMBC again!

I have never watched Beck's show, but seeing the few clips that ran on other sites really gave me the creeps as I watched him. I did not know if the man was pretending to cry as a spoof, or just pretending to cry for some ratings.

It looks like the consequence of being an emotional rodeo clown is making bags and bags of money. Blech couldn't have picked a better example than Tammy Faye to compare himself to -- she and her "Preacher Man" ripped people off, too, and left them looking like fools. Exactly what Beck does.

God, I miss Walter Cronkite.
