People:

Dr. Jan Adams, who performed surgery on Kanye West's mother a day before her November 2007 death, has given up his medical license, according to the Medical Board of California.

"A series of complaints were filed against Mr. Adams, but he chose to surrender his license instead of contest them," Medical Board spokeswoman Candis Cohen tells PEOPLE.

What I can't get over is that the Calif state medical board website had info posted about his malpractice suits, yet none of Oprah's staff looked at that when they vetted him apparently.

I saw a woman on the Today show talking about how this man botched her surgery. He shouldn't be allowed to practice again.

It's fairly well known that a number of physicians practicing "cosmetic" surgery including liposuction, Botox injections, "vaginal rejuvenation" procedures have not completed a residency or are Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. This isn't to say that these doctors are doing anything wrong, or are in some way incompetent. When there's the opportunity, it is the patients responsibility to choose his/her doctor wisely. Having said this, Dr. Adams may not have been the reason this woman passed away. From what I've read her previous surgeon suggested she undergo pre-op clearance before proceeding. A good pre-op history and physical isn't a joke, especially for elective procedures. There should be a compelling reason to have surgery. The benefits have to outweigh the risks.

It's unfortunate that everyone scrutinizes where he went to medical school and trained after something has gone wrong. These things aren't indicative of a good or bad surgeon. Even if he was board certified, this woman may have had a complication that was unforeseen. I can't make any judgments on the length of the procedure, I wasn't in the OR with him. I disagree that the number of suits suggests he was not careful or that he's guilty of malpractice. He's in a profession that invites people with self image issues. I will say that Dr. West shares in some of the blame, but ultimately Dr. Adams was at the helm when something went wrong.

Yeah but this day and time if any infertile couple goes to a regular gynecologist instead of a fertilitiy specialist, they should have their head examined. Some doctors will claim they know this or that but really don't. Take the time to look up someone with years of experience and training for what you want done. That's the bottom line.

He can go on Oprah, but not pay his child support! I thought he was a creep before, but sticking it to his kids is inexcusable.

The guy was a real loser. Glad to see he's out of business - in California, anyway.

This is good news. Another creep who shouldn't be a Doctor no longer able to practice medicine. Although I heard many of them move over to Brazil. Dr. Jan Adams is a fallen man. I remember when he would be on Oprah, Talk Shows, and every other media outlet discussing how great a surgeon he thought he was. Look at him now. I thought he was in jail?

Thank goodness we have doctors policing their own. Even a hack like this was sanctioned by the AMA

All you have to do is pay professional dues I believe. If people hadn't complained I don't think the AMA would have done anything. It is just too easy for doctors to switch to cosmetic surgery if they wish. This man is a disgrace. He needs to be monitored because he could go to another state and start performing surgeries again.

And the scarier thought is there are so many more doctors out there who are also unfit to have a medical license that we don't know of..

Like he had another option, basically his license was taken away.

If he fought to keep his license they probably threatened to go to the district attorney and press criminal charges. Not only would he have lost his license anyway, but he would have went to jail too.

Proves that even though he's smart enough to earn a Harvard medical degree, he's evidently not mentally fit to have a medical license.

Basically, he was a scam artist. He wasn't even board certified in plastic surgery and he has had several malpractice suits against him in a short time. I am a physician and I know that even good physicians get sued (sometimes bad ones don't.) However, this number of suits is suggestive of a physician that was not careful. It sounds like he may have performed surgeries without a proper medical workup on a routine basis. Usually, you'll get lucky and things will be ok, but.......
