Beck Faint

David Buckner, professor of organizational leadership at Columbia University, passed out live on Glenn Beck's Fox News show Monday afternoon.

"You all right?" Beck asked Buckner in the middle of a discussion on government investments.

"I'm passing out," Buckner told Beck.

"Want to sit down?" he asked, before the guest fell to the floor. "We'll be back in just a second," he said, and then the show cut to commercial.

(Big thanks to HuffPost Media Monitor Aaron Perenack for alerting us to this segment as soon as it happened.)

Watch:

Beck went on to say Buckner was receiving immediate medical attention.

"Everyone thought it was part of the show because this show, you never know what to expect..." he added. "He apologizes, and I'm like 'Are you kidding me, the ratings will be through the roof!'"

Part 2 of my previous comment:

Eventually I felt a little better and got to my feet. I approached that same person and asked if I could sit down somewhere. She had to call a manager to find out while I swayed back and forth. Eventually they said I could sit on a bench halfway across the store. So I grabbed a cart and started that direction, slowly. I called my mother, explained what was going on and collectively we figured out that it was the sickness coupled with the meds and me not consuming any food for 24 hours. I finally managed to flag down someone who was somewhat helpful. I explained what happened and asked if she could get me a drink of some sort. I gave her a few bucks and she brought back a Sprite. She disappeared and I never saw her again. Ultimately my father had to come get me.

So let me send a shout out to all the fine folks working at the Wal-Mart in west Wichita. The Family Guy concept of Dick Cheney as a Wal-Mart greeter comes to mind.

I can sympathize with the guy passing out. I basically did the same thing at a Wal-Mart in Wichita a few years back. I'd been sick, had been taking 2 high-powered antibiotics and hadn't eaten in over a day (just wasn't hungry). In the self-checkout line at Wal-Mart (getting supplies and a few DVDs) everything started going black on me. I realized that if I didn't sit down I was going to fall down. So I sat down right there in the middle of the checkout lane and start fanning myself with my hat. I was sweating a river and breathing hard. I figured someone would say or do something. Nope. Too much to ask of my fellow human beings. The people in line behind me looked the other way (literally). Eventually the next checkout deeper in that checkout lane opened up and people guided their carts around me. Nice. Eventually the woman overseeing all the self checkout lanes headed over and I thought I was going to get a little help. Nope. Too much to expect I guess. She took my stuff off the checkout counter, cleared the purchase in progress and carried everything back to her counter never saying a word to me or even acknowledging that I was there. Lovely.

See my next post for the rest of the narrative.

Beck wearing jeans and sneakers. This might be the start of a trend for others in the newsfield. Not!

Fainting man aside. I wonder what George Will would say about fellow conservative Glen Beck wearing denim jeans with a blazer and tie. The jeans were not in the camera frame until the zoom in on the pass out. Faux Suit on FAUX NEWS!

Now Glenn Beck has only one act left to do to realize his dream of becoming a real life Howard Beale (Network, 1976): Arrange his own assassination on live TV. I'm sure "the ratings will be through the roof" for that one too!

Look - no matter what you think of Beck - the issue here is that someone needed help. Regardless - I hope this guy is okay. Does everything have to be turned into a sloppy political stint?

I can't believe this is even being discussed....

I've never watched Glen Beck, but it's starting to sound a cross between one of those evangelical shows and Jerry Springer.

You need to at least watch once. You will disagree with him at many points, I am sure. But at least he will tell you what he really believes. In today's world... that is a real anomaly.

A guy faints and no one comes rushing over to see if he is having a heart attack or still breathing. Beck, trying to pass it off on others says "someone help him please" (for god's sake he's got a show to do) and then a guy saunters over. WOW!

I don't know, I see Mr. Beck ask for help and also provide help himself...

No?

Yeah, he was a great help. I'm sure you want Glen to be there to help you when YOU pass out.....

This is just my observation, but I think Beck's reference to cancer got inside this guys head and did a number on him . It can happen. Vasovagal syncope. Standing in one place for a long time does not help.

Just a note: the Wikipedia link on this page points to the article for the drummer of Papa Roach, an awful nu-metal band from the late 90s/early aughts.

That said, people faint in normally oxygenated conditions for lots of reasons--illness, low blood pressure, side effects from prescribed or illegal drugs, hunger, stress, phobic reactions and other psychogenic factors, or even standing for long periods of time. More rarely, some unfortunate people have a tendency to pass out upon executing basic bodily functions such as coughing or going to the bathroom. People who are prone to it tend to notice the "prodromal" or accompanying symptoms that signal imminent syncope (loss of consciousness.) Usually it's clammy palms, nausea, tunnel vision, and ringing in the ears. Lol, at least he gave a warning.

Esteemed Columbia Professor comes to the embarrassing realization that his presence on the show legitimizes the ranting lunatic and drops to the floor...

What's most amazing is that ALL OF US WATCHED IT. And some people apparently watch this show regularly. And I thought the Jerry Springer Show was the proof of the last days of the American Empire! Sick, sick, sick.
